2011 Open Water
« on: May 30, 2011, 01:39:08 PM »

How did everyone do? I had some motor issues but did find a couple. Big fish are still prespawn. Lots of little males cruising the shallows with the bluegills. Found them cranking 6-8 f.o.w. Matched the hatch with the bluegill crank.

Sweet - beautiful and healthy looking fish.  Love to crank them up in the pre-spawn.  I take it the water temps are in the 60-65 degree range?

Been a while since I've been able to post a report. I fished a small lake by my home last friday that I had only ice fished in the past. I wasn't sure what to expect but we stumbled into some fish almost instantly. We found the greatest concentration of fish on the edge of lily pads where they meet some other vegatation. They were all roughly the same size 2-3lbs

The next day we fished big marine and had a heck of a time putting a pattern together. We probably caught 15 bass but all of them were dinks. Several northerns were caught that day too. I'm blaming the lack of big fish on finicky post-spawn conditions. I may be wrong but it makes me feel better  :)

Big Marine (15 years ago) was our go-to lake. Used to love that place. The North side of that little island there has coughed up 1-2 really nice fish (4+) there.

Thanks for the tip MK-9. Im going to have to check out that area during prefishing and see what I can come up with.

I just had a club tournament yesterday on Cross Lake in Pine City and ended up with 4 fish. Couldnt manage to get number 5. I did however lose a hog 4+lbs. Had him up to the boat twice and couldn't get him in the net. Then he broke my rod and line and swam away. Turns out a lot of people struggled though and I came in 5th place despite losing the big one. Im still in contention for the state tournament if I can get a good finish at Big Marine early october.

Yesterday was bluebird skies and a high sun and we found all of our fish under docks and boatlifts. That lake has dirty water and no distict weed edge so it seemed like a logical place to start.

Care to share the details? What were they biting and were they staging anywere specific? Lakes should be freezing up pretty quick, looks like open water is coming to a close.

River, outside main channel bends with deeper water, rock, wood mix, 3/16 shaky football heads & smallie beavers
