Beginner Backlash Prevention Tip
« on: October 19, 2011, 11:40:59 AM »

For all you beginners (and even seasoned anglers) to help prevent backlashes while learning a baitcaster do the following:

Either make a 20-30 yard cast or pull line out that far.
Pull an xtra 3 feet out
Take some Blue painters masking tape, use the one that is the width of the spool, take about 6 inches and tape it to the spool and then reel the line over it and start learning how to throw one.

If you do catch a big fish and it pulls drag, no worries, the tape will com right off or the line will tear it.

Now you can fish instead of picking out backlashes

I don't mean to undermine your knowledge but wouldnt it just be easier to learn from backlashes!! So you could get it right the next time.

I personally love this tip as it allows you to have your young ens' use your poles without having to carry seperate setups for them.  But believe you have a point Broskee, eventually they will need to learn how to cast with one that doesn't have tape on it.  However, this allows you to go fishing without the worry, or hassle, of backlashes.

Tight lines all!

it's a great tip. I have been using baitcasters for forty years and can cast without backlashing most of the time. but there are times that even the best of us have problems, like throwing crankbaits against the wind.

Good tips here, this past year was my first with a bait caster. Took some getting used to, but have figured out how to feel it out w/ my thumb much better. Still get a backlash at least once or twice while out on the water, but much improved since first beginning.

I think even the best of the best Pros get backlashes now and then.  Think it's just part of the game.

I used this tip, from another site, when I got my first bait-caster. If it wasn't for this tip I would have given up after the first few times. I learned how to cast without the frustration of back-lashing every cast. Once I became confident in my casting I removed the tape. I still get backlashes every now and then but, it's not nearly as frustrating as it would be to a first time user of a bait-caster.

I think that is a really good tip for someone starting out... I know i wasted a lot of time when i first started bass fishing and bought my first boat.  HOwever, i think there is a lot to learn from getting backlashes and removing them.  Developing the knowledge of how much pressure to hold on the spool on different casts, how to have the tension set, the right line that works for you, etc...  Learning from your mistakes.  But a very good tip for anyone wanting to learn and get the hang of a baitcaster!!!  ~c~

This is a great idea for someone like me who has NEVER thrown a baitcaster before, and I'm looking forward to starting my learning process this year! Thanks for the tip!

While it could work, i think its fairly pointless, 25-30 yards, thats an average cast with a good set up and a proper weight lure for the rod, so you could cast and not even have to use your thumb and not get a backlash, but as soon as the tape comes off any you try to do the same, backlash. Good tip, but hope you see my point.

For those that don't agree with this tip, i have to say that i just don't understand? Why not? Bill dance has reported this tip before and says he still does it to every reel he uses. The only difference is that I don't agree with using blue paint tape. I suggest a narrow strip of cloth sport tape. The sport tape grips better and you can use less of it. I suggest to put it down deeper than 25 yds, but that's a great starting point to learn on. Once you have the hang of it, just make the longest cast you can with the heaviest weight you would use and then pull another 5 to 10 yds off, put the wrap of tape there and you will never see it. No matter how good you are, we all have mishaps such as the bait smacking the trolling motor on a side cast. No one is quick enough with the thumb to stop a major backlash when that happens. However, with the tape in place, all of the backlash will be above the tape and can be picked out a lot easier. The tape does not prevent backlash, it only stops it from getting so deep that you have to cut the line off and respool, so beginners still get plenty of practice on backlash without the utter frustration of ruining a full spool of line.

On a side note... those beginners with baitcasters, keep in mind that quality of reel will make a huge difference.

I have spend $59 on a reel before to save a few bucks and have literally only used the reel 1 time because while i was using, not matter what I did, it would birdsnest on me.   I also have a Shimano Caenan that i've cast in 25mph wind and been clean and smooth, and that only costs about $30 more.  If you're gonig to try to save a few dollars, there are plenty of rod companies out there that have a great rod at a reasonable cost, and you wont be forfeiting castability.

Pro reel is spot on use the tape, I use scotch tape or black electrical tape it`s the perfect size for almost all reels. Been doing this for over 10 years and always do it on every reel..

This is a very good tip. I have plenty of experience with baitcasters, from $30 to $350. Preventing backlashes all comes down to working your thumb right and tuning the reel properly for the casts and baits your using. But we all, veterans and beginners, get side tracked and through a backlash now and then. I still use this trick to make sure that for those few times I slip up, the backlash is minimized. Sure a beginner has to learn from birdsnests, but the tape trick makes good training wheels and prevents catastrophic effects that might deter them from using the useful tool that is the casting reel altogether.

I would have to agree with you on this. They will have to learn it sometime. My 10 year old son can use a bait caster, and rarely backlashes. The trick I used for him is, a good reel, like the revo sx. You can set that reel up nicely and not backlash.

My biggest problem in teaching my 9yo son a baitcaster is that he's used to a spinning rod. This causes him to release his thumb a bit too late. Every time he throws at the ground about 10-20 feet in front of him. The only way I know to counter-act this is by tightening up the settings on the reel so it won't over-run. In doing that, I am actually making it harder for him to cast.

I like what Pro-Reel said about making a long cast and taking off about 10 more yards of line. Then I can loosen up the spool tension a bit, he can start to learn to cast with a few backlashes he should be well on his way.

Be careful guys. I tried this the other day with masking tape and I was backlashing every cast until i took it off. It work for the first couple of casts. But in the end, it wasn't worth it. I would just suggest beginners to set their brakes all the way on.

I have to agree that starting with the brakes way tighter than need be is best for beginners. but taping still prevents backlashes from being really severe. Backlashes result from the spool continuing to spin while no more line is being steadily pulled from the reel, causing loose line to make big loops of slack that build up in the reel and tangle amongst each other. If backlashes are still really bad while  taping the line, the brakes are either way too loose or you're not taping close enough to the max distance of the cast you're gonna make with the given setup and the spool is still allowed to spin several times after the bait has reached its maximum distance

I think this is a really good tip! I am going to use it when I teach my wife how to use a bait caster!
I am surprised at how many dislike this tip? As long as it is being used as a teaching aid and not a crutch I think it would help any beginner!!!

Tried it on my son's reel. His biggest problem is being used to a spinning rod and the later release required. He is constantly throwing at the ground just 15-20 feet in front of him. Any one have any ideas on how to remedy this?
