Modifying the weedgaurd on jigs
« on: May 28, 2012, 09:33:30 PM »

learned a little trick today that I think is going to help everyone out. I throw my swim jig in pretty heavy grass so the closer the weedgaurd to the hook the better and the slimmer the profile the better. So what I did was put my finger right where the weegaurd goes into the lead and pushed down on it really hard. It bent the weedguard closer to the hook and flared it out. So now its nice and slender and actually kind of surrounds the hook giving 360* protection. Give it a try, let me know what you think.

Jig on the left is an unmodified 1/4 ounce lipdripper and the right one is one that I had modified.

Always work the Weedguards and spread them on all jigs.  it will increase your hookup ratios too.

yes sir!

not sure I can recall who showed me this..but I do push my weed guards the other way...pushing them toward the head and 'vee-ing' them out...  this creates a 'fan' effect that I feel is helpful in keeping the jig from rolling over...as well as softens the weedguard a bit for increased hook up success.

now, I am targeting isolated cover most often in the form of rocks/laydowns...

once watched Denny Brauer flipping a strike king bitsy bug to bedding bass (on TV)...he'd get pick up after pick up...swing and MISS!  not Denny?  as I watched, I was curious to note he just fished them straight out of the package...and didn't work over the weed guard...  to this day I'm convinced had he done just that...he'd have hooked up vs missed so many fish.

at least that's what I keep telling myself.   ::)   ;D

Spread the weed guard and open the hook point a little on all the jigs I use. Both things improve hook ups and fish in the boat.

Funny how opening that hookpoint a tiny bit will change 100% of how many Roof Of Mouth hook ups you get and By that you almost eleminate their abuility to throw the jig.  ~gf

you mean like we do with frogs?  Just bend the hook out some?  I love jigs but I've never tried that before.

That is a strange one indeed for Denny. In fact, it was an article in Bassmaster magazine by Denny after he won the Classic in 1998 that taught me how to trim, soften and spread the weedguards on jigs. Makes me wonder what his reasoning might have been for not doing so with the Bitsy flip jig?  ~b~ ~b~

Kidd open the hook point a little then start to close your hand with the jig laying in your palm. You should feel the hook point as your hand begins to close around it. That's when it's right.
