Summer time tips
« on: June 13, 2012, 10:47:53 AM »

 ~fff ~cf ~sun

OK Not sure if anyone else noticed, but it is getting crazy hot here in Florida...The rain is starting to come at least once a day, and the humidity is through the roof. I personally am having a difficult time landing any big fish.

So I'm asking for some advice on where to find the fish, what lures to use etc. What was working for me this spring isn't cutting it for me starting out this summer.

Froging and punching no doubt. In the heat of the day you wont find many big girls swimming around(fish that is).

Try fishing deeper offshore structure such as points, humps, etc. FIsh slower and more finesse. Try to get out in the early morning or late afternoon when they'll be more active.

This is the time of year to get your moneys worth out of your electronics !!  I would troll the deeper water looking for suspended fish, Rocks, Stumps, Tree tops.. Fish move deep this time of year.  Usually if you find one you'll find a gold mine .  Fish school up this time of year and if you can find deep structure you'll find them stacked.

get some polorized glasses and look for small brem or bait fish near the shore find the small fish early in the morning and the bigger bass will be there where the water drops off by the shore.

I also am from the central Florida area and my biggest thing this time of year was to stop fishing 6am to 1pm  is to start fishing 6pm to 1 am. I would fish just as if I was fishing during the day. But this year may be dangerious since I cant get out of Lake Minneola to get to any of the rest of the clermont chain and Johns lakes is so dry I would not try to navigate in the dark. But my biggest thing is to try and get away from the heat find the shade in the day and matted veg if able to find. Try to find the springs for the cooler water cause for the lakes I fish 12-14ft is deep and the temp there isnt no cooler than 4-7ft. With water levels the way they are this year its just going to be a tough year and unless we get a whole lot more of needed rain you may be in for more rough times fishing to come.

I am also from Central Fl and in the summer I switch to the rivers.  They are spring fed and are much cooler.  They are also canopied and shaded. Went last Sunday and landed about 10 bass in 4 hours.  They tend to be a little smaller than lake bass but livelier.

This should be probably one of the easiest times to catch fish. Here is a very good strategy, one that is practically fool-proof.
Get yourself a senko, yum dinger, or similar worm.  Preferably a 5-inch gander mountain trick stick (those are my favorite stick worms, I'm not much of a senko guy).  Use a cable tie (zip tie) or an O-ring around the middle of the worm.  Wacky rig it through the middle of the worm using a 2/0 WEEDLESS HOOK.
Skip it under docks.  Literally under them.  Also, if you can find pontoon boats that are docked, and you can skip under them, you are almost GUARANTEED to catch a bass.  They LOVE being under pontoon boats because it's so dark under there.  This will work best if you have access the the front of the boat (it's hard to skip under there when you're trying to get in from the side with the engine because the engine gets in the way).  This is a really good strategy.  It works for 3 reasons.
Bass like cover.  Bass like shade.  Bass that are in shallow water are usually bass that are active.
Good luck.  Btw, rain should be helping you, not hurting you.  Rain makes them bite, if you can go out and fish in the rain (as long as it's not pouring) you should be able to catch some nice bass.

If you are trying to beat the heat, fish at night.  I was given a Frogg Togg Chilly Pad towel last summer and never got to use it.  I finally broke that bad boy out this past weekend.  Throw it in the cooler on your way to the lake and when you get hot, throw it over your head or around your neck.  The cold will hit you really good when you first put it on, then its a cooling sensation for a few hours, then throw it back in the cooler for a few min or soak up some ice water and keep going!

Unless I am misunderstanding something, you really have two separate issues that you have mentioned here: Fishing in the heat and fishing in the rain, and each should be approached differently.

Fishing in the heat

First let's address the issue of fishing in the heat by breaking that down into two smaller factors, those being whether the heat is too much for you or whether you think it is a problem for the fish and is turning off the bite. If the heat is just too high to be able to tolerate then fishing at night is probably your best bet. If you can find a way to deal with the heat during the day and you are fishing lakes then I would either fish the deeper offshore structure for the fish that have moved into their summer patterns, or I would fish shallow for resident fish. (There are always some fish shallow no matter how hot it gets, but the majority move to the offshore areas.)

If you think that the heat has turned off the bite on the lake then rivers are the way to go. Because the current cools the water more than in nearby lakes and provides more oxygen the fish will be more comfortable. They will be on the main river at this time of year, so look for anything that breaks the current and creates a slack-water eddie on one side. Fish this side of these objects from a variety of angles and with a variety of lures until you find what the fish want. sometimes this can change from one object to another so be flexible.

Fishing in the rain

According to Gary Klien, regardless of air temp., when it comes to fishing in the rain all you need to remember is two things: Move shallow and fish fast. Due to the decreased light penetration bass will feel more comfortable roaming about the shallows so you need to cover a lot of water. He suggests reaction type baits like Rat-L-Traps, buzzbaits, crankbaits and spinnerbaits in flat colors not reflective chromes. Go with bone, chartreuse, black etc. If you are throwing a spinnerbait this is one of the best times to use painted blades in these colors.

Sorry for the length of this post but I hope something I said helps.

Very interesting information. I would have never thought about using the flat colors with the rattle traps etc. It makes sense...all the water ripples and lack of sun to shine the lure decrease the chances of it being seen when fishing it fast. Thanks for the info.
