Few questions regarding trick worms?
« on: June 14, 2012, 08:01:59 AM »

Was in wally world the other day and was going to pick up a pack of Zoom Trick Worms but I was unsure what hooks to use with them.  Seems as though I have seen videos of people using just a regular 3/0 EWG hook with them and bullet weight (1/8 oz) but also what appeared to be a jig head style hook?

So what do you use?  Any assistance or guidance would be great....Thanks

No wrong way to fish a Trick Worm.  Trick worm always seems to trick'em.   ;)

I fish mine sometimes with a 1/8-1/4 ounce bullet weight and 3/0 Superline hook.  I will fish them weightless, and will fish them on a shakey head 1/16-1/8 ounce.  I've fished them on a drop shot and a Carolina rig.  Even fished them wacky style, weightless and with a small weight wacky.

pretty much what he said.

I'd be more interested in someone finding a way that they DONT catch fish.  Up here on the potomac i fish them weightless in the grass.  When the tide is coming in... the brighter the color the better... and bubble gum and methiolate (sp) are the best.   When they're on beds, around docks and hard structure, i'll throw them with a shakyhead.   When they're out on ledges and around trees, i'll throw them t-rigged with anything from 1/16 oz up to a 1/4 oz.

I normally fish them weightless.  I will tie a swivel on the line about 18" to 24" up then tie on a straight shank hook (I use a 1/0 or 2/0).  The swivel gives you a little weight to throw the worm further as well as preventing line twist and causes the bait to fall head first.  I usually retrieve with a 3 twitch and pause method.  I fish it in all levels of the water column but it is really good in cover and shallow.

Guys-

Thanks for the answers...I swear this website is so awesome:)  Anytime you have questions you know someone will at least try to help...I really appreciate it!

Just a few more questions regarding "shakey head" hooks.  I have never used them before.  I assume that is what makes it look like the worm is head down in the water in the videos I watch online?  I watched a few and the action looks pretty awesome.  I suppose you don't get that kind of action just using a regular bullet weight / hook setup?  And, I guess you try to match a shakey head color with the color of the worm, or at least as close as possible (Do people just use blacks, browns, greens, etc general colors?)

Thanks.....

Yeah, those shakey head hooks are what make the worm stand up.  Some folks try to match up colors with the worm, but I just use black all the time.  I keep it simple in regards to color of the worm too, I just use Black, june bug, green pumpkin, and watermelon seed on the shakey head.  I may have been seen once or twice throwing it weightless in bubble gum...   ~shhh

it all depends.  Peronsally the only shakyhead i use are the 1/4 oz in black.  i have others but dont throw them... its just what i'm confident with.  I know some guys who will only throw green pumpkin.

All-

Just stopped by Wally World and picked up some trick worms and some shakey head hooks but I am confused on how to hook the worm on the wire piece that is sticking out?  Do you put the wire piece through the nose of the worm or does it attach to the top side of the worm?

Any assistance would be great.....picture attached

You want to put the worm through the top of the worm and attach it to the hook and weight so it looks like the worm on the right...

jab that wire piece right down the middle of the worm so it holds.  I use the screw on type personally, but it's the same concept

now that i look closer, it looks like the hooks are on 2 different wires coming off... shove the long end down intot he worm, and bend out the shorter one so you can then stick that one into the back of the worm whe it's attatched

I have never used Zoom Trick Worms but I have caught bass with other worms that were of a similar style (that long, thin, 'finesse' type body) and in my opinion, these are the best ways you can fish them.
-Wacky rigged with a 2/0 weedless hook.  Could go down to a 1/0 for an even slower fall, or 3/0 or 4/0 for a faster fall.  Using an o-ring or cable tie around the middle is a given to get more mileage out of the worms.
-weightless texas rig
-texas rigged with a 1/16 oz weight.  The 1/16 oz bullet weight is usually the only weight I use for bass fishing with plastics.  Even if I'm trying to fish somewhat deeper water, the most I will usually go to is a 1/8 oz sinker.  It's harder to keep in contact with the bottom, but you will get so many more bites with a lighter sinker, because they almost always hit on the fall.  A 1/16 oz slip sinker (not pegged will make the fall even slower) is so deadly, it makes the worm seem a tad bigger than if it were rigged weightless, it gives the worm enough weight to cast it AT LEAST five or six feet further, which is very helpful on windy days.  It allows you to have a little weight without sacrificing that slow fall which is critical for worm fishing.

Texas rigged with a 1/16 oz slip sinker is my favorite way to fish them.
I'm not a shaky head guy.  However, I know that these type worms will perform extremely well on a shaky head jig.

I agree. better get a swivel for weightless trick worming. Line twist was driving me bananas till I read a article about using a swivel.
