braided line on spinnning reel
« on: June 16, 2012, 01:27:14 AM »

So I got in a bit of a pickle the other day on the water and was forced to put braided line on my spinning reel. Since then, I will cast and randomly get big knots in my line!

Are you not supposed to put braid on spinning reels or something?

They are probably what we call "wind knots" what are you trying to throw? Weightless plastics are famous for doing it to you.

I know a few things that causes that.

Spool is too full, line is spooled on too loosely, the braid isn't all the way on the spool when the bail it closed.

As hard as it is to believe, but braids will also experience line twist and that can also be a factor.

Best to try tying the line to a tree with a very good swivel, hike away from the tree with the bail open or a light drag, when you get to the end, set the drag very tight and reel yourself back to the tree re-spooling the braid on tightly.

After that, don't close the bail after a cast by turning the handle, do it by hand, and watch to make sure there is no line across the lip of the spool, that will make the loop and winding ties the knot, usually.

Like Dave said, it usually happens with lighter lures because its not heavy enough to keep the line straight on the reel, and the loop can form. That's not the only time it happens, but it is more common with light or slack line.

I throw carolina rigs on spinning reels with braid and love it. Never had a problem with it. What brand of braid is it?

If a fish is pulling drag and you keep cranking the handle at the same time this too will put twist in the line also.

It was Stren Sonic Braid. I think my problem was a light lure. I was throwing a hollow body frog. I went to the ocean this past week and threw heavy gotcha lures on it and never had a problem

all of my spinning application are in Braid line format. I love it and it helps me pick up the bites.

sometimes i would get a line twist, its because of how I throw the line :)

I used to run into that problem all the time when I was guiding.  Clients would use the reel handle to close the bail on my spinning reels.  When this is done, the bail throws a slight loose loop of line on the spool.  Then as you begin the retrieve, the retrieved line goes over the top of the loose line.  This builds up cast after cast and with all that loose line, eventually you end up with a tangled mess, usually stuck in one of the rod guides!

In order to eliminate this problem, first of all, make sure that your line is wound tightly on the spool.  Then, when you're fishing, make sure to manually close the bail and give line a tug to pull the slack from the line.

Voila', problem solved!
