The $6.5 million Stren Series is headed to the Mobile Delta in MobileMOBILE, Ala. — The $6.5 million Stren Series is headed to the Mobile Delta in Mobile, Ala., Nov. 8-11 for the $1 million Stren Series Championship, where the winning pro will take home as much as $140,000 and the winning co-angler will earn as much as $70,000.

“I’m excited about this year’s event,” said Kellogg’s pro Dave Lefebre of Union City, Pa., who finished third at last year’s championship and qualified for a return in 2007 as the No. 14 seed in the Stren Series Northern Division. “I have never fished on the Mobile Delta before, and I always think it is fun to go places like this and spend the time to figure them out. I’m assuming that guys will still be following a summer pattern with the unseasonably warm temperatures, so I think it could be won deep or shallow.”

Lefebre said the dominant baits will likely be an array of jigs and soft plastics.

“With the opportunity to fish shallow, I think this event might be right up my alley with a flipping bite,” he said. “I haven’t won an event all year, and it would be awesome to win this one. This is my last tournament of ’07, and it would be awesome to close it out with a win. The competition at the Stren Series championship is just as tough as any FLW Tour or FLW Series event. These guys can hold their own, and it will probably be a challenging tournament.”

Anglers will take off from Chocolotta Bay Ramp, located at 1595 Battleship Parkway in Mobile, at 7 each morning. Thursday and Friday’s weigh-ins will be held at the USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park, which is located at 2703 Battleship Parkway in Mobile, beginning at 3 p.m. As part of the festivities, Bay Chevrolet, located at 2900 Government Blvd. in Mobile, will also host Chevy Pro Night on Thursday, Nov. 8, from 6 to 8 p.m.

Saturday and Sunday’s weigh-ins will be held at the Arthur R. Outlaw Mobile Convention Center, located at One S. Water St. in Mobile, along with the Stren Series Championship Family Fun Zone and Outdoor Show. The Family Fun Zone, which opens at noon Saturday and Sunday, features interactive displays, product samples and games for the entire family to enjoy. On Saturday, the first 100 children 14 and under who visit the Family Fun Zone will receive a free pair of Solar Bat sunglasses. On Sunday, the first 200 children 14 and under will be treated to a free rod and reel combo. Weigh-ins both days will begin at 4 p.m. Admission to all activities is free.

Two hundred pros and 200 co-anglers (the top 40 based on points standings from each of the Stren Series’ five divisions; see related press releases to view championship fields) will compete for two days on the Mobile Delta to determine the top 10 pros and top 10 co-anglers who will advance to the final round based on their two-day accumulated weight. Weights are cleared for the final round, and co-angler competition concludes on day three with the winner determined by the day’s heaviest catch. Pro competition concludes on day four, with the winner determined by the heaviest accumulated weight from days three and four.

The winning pro will earn an Evinrude- or Yamaha-powered Ranger 198VX equipped with Lowrance electronics and a Minn Kota trolling motor plus $50,000 cash. If the winner is the original owner of a qualifying Ranger boat powered by an Evinrude or Yamaha outboard that is used during the tournament, he will also receive a $25,000 bonus from Ranger and an additional $25,000 Evinrude or Yamaha bonus for a total award of $140,000. The winning co-angler will receive a fully rigged Ranger 198VX plus $15,000 cash. If the winning co-angler meets Ranger and Evinrude or Yamaha contingency guidelines, he will also receive bonuses totaling $15,000 for a total award of $70,000.

The Stren Series Championship is being hosted by the Mobile Bay Convention and Visitors Bureau. For more information, visit mobilebay.org or call (800) 566-2453.

Five Bassmaster Southern Open pros earn eligibility to move up to Elite Series

DECATUR, Ala. — Bassmaster Elite Series pro Charlie Hartley of Grove City, Ohio, qualified Saturday for the 2008 Bassmaster Classic — his first — along with two-time Classic qualifier Todd Auten of Lake Wylie, S.C., and Bobby Lane of Lakeland, Fla., who will join his brother, Chris, in the Classic field.

Hartley, Auten and Lane qualified through the Bassmaster Southern Open circuit for the Feb. 22-24 Classic on South Carolina’s Lake Hartwell. The three pros finished first, second and third, respectively, in the season-long points race, which ended Saturday at the Open’s final 2007 event on Alabama’s Wheeler Lake out of Decatur.

Points-race winner Hartley entered the Wheeler event in second, thanks to his third-place finish at the Kissimmee Southern Open in March and his second at the Santee Cooper event in May. With a solid 13th-place finish in Alabama, he skated to the win by a 27-point margin.

“It’s wonderful. Points winner is a great title to have on my resume — and I’m going to the Classic, a lifetime dream,” said the 43-year-old Hartley, a veteran Elite pro who’s been competing in BASS events since 1996. “I fished my first bass tournament when I was 8 years old, so I’ll be the proudest person there.”

He said he felt the turning point in his Classic bid was on the second day of the Wheeler competition.

“With about 15 minutes to go, I ran up to a dock and caught a really big fish, and I thought at the time that I might’ve made the Classic with that fish,” he said.

Auten, 41, a two-time Classic qualifier has scored a 13th-place finish in 2003 and a 34th in 1999 at fishing’s most major event.

“I feel good, but of course I wanted to win the points,” said Auten, who also finished second at the Wheeler tournament. “I can’t wait for the Classic. Lake Hartwell is only two hours from my house. It’s a great fishery, and I’ve done well in the past there.”

Lane, 33, will be competing in his first Classic alongside his brother, Elite Series pro Chris Lane of Winter Haven, Fla., who qualified on the strength of his position in the Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Angler of the Year Standings.

“I’m very excited to see Chris in there, and I know he is to see me there,” said Lane, who’s about a year older than his brother. “But I was nervous today. My nerves haven’t been this racked in three years. But I made the Classic, qualified for the Elites, so life’s good.”

Only seven of the 50 Classic contenders are yet to be determined. Six will be BASS Federation Nation anglers who will qualify through their championship, Nov. 8-10 on Florida’s Lake Tohopekaliga, an event that will air on ESPN2 at 9 a.m. ET, Feb. 16, 2008.

The 50th Classic qualifier will be the winner of the Nov. 14-17 championship of the Bassmaster Weekend Series Operated by American Bass Anglers. That tournament will be on Georgia’s Clarks Hill Lake.

Elite Series Qualifiers
In addition to their Classic berths, Hartley, Auten and Lane earned eligibility next year for the top level of competitive bass fishing, the Bassmaster Elite Series.

Hartley qualified in September through the Elite Series, but he now takes his eligibility through the Southern Open. Auten and Lane secured first-year Elite status.

Also receiving an invitation to join the Elite Series was the fourth-place finisher in the points race: Mark Davis, 44, of Mount Ida, Ark. Davis is a three-time Bassmaster Angler of the Year (1995, 1998 and 2001); he also won the 1995 Classic.

Elite Series pro Terry Scroggins, 38 of San Mateo, Fla., took the fifth Southern Open Elite spot. Already qualified for the ’08 Elite Series, Scroggins’ eligibility now channels through the Open instead of through the Elite Series.

Florida’s Bobby Lane Leads Bassmaster Southern Open on Wheeler Lake in Alabama

DECATUR, Fla. – Pulling a five-fish limit of largemouth bass from the “Decatur flats” of Wheeler Lake, Bobby Lane of Lakeland, Fla., took the lead Thursday at the season finale of the 2007 Bassmaster Southern Open out of Decatur, Ala.

With 19 pounds, 15 ounces, Lane put a 3-pound, 5-ounce cushion between him and Bassmaster Elite Series pro Tim Horton of Muscle Shoals, Ala., who brought 16 pounds, 10 ounces to the scales for second place. In third was another Elite Series pro, Gerald Swindle of Warrior, Ala., who had 15 pounds, 2 ounces.

Frank Ippoliti of Smithsburg, Md., was fourth with 15-1, and Ron Klys of Gainesville, Fla., secured fifth place with 14-13, a weight that included the Purolator Big Bass of the day, a 5-13 brute.

The full field of pros will compete again Friday, then cut to 30 for Saturday’s final day. The winner will take home $6,000 in cash and a Triton/Mercury rig valued at $50,000.

Fishing fans can access real-time leaderboards and live, streaming video of the weigh-ins at http://www.espnoutdoors.com beginning at 3 p.m. CT Friday and Saturday.

Because the Wheeler event is the final 2007 Southern Open tournament, it wraps up the season’s points race. The three pros who come out on top will qualify for berths in the 2008 Bassmaster Classic, Feb. 22-24 on Lake Hartwell out of Greenville, S.C. The top five pros will earn eligibility for next year’s Bassmaster Elite Series, the highest level of competitive bass fishing.

In eighth place in the points race, Lane’s in contention for a Classic spot and Elite Series eligibility.

“It’s my goal to make the Classic, for sure,” said Lane, a 33-year-old full-time angler who’s the brother of Elite pro Chris Lane of Florida, who quailfied for the Classic through the Elite Series.

Going into the Wheeler tournament, Bassmaster Elite Series pro Terry Scroggins, 38, of San Mateo, Fla., led the points race, but he weighed-in only 6 pounds, 9 ounces to tie for 98th place. Scroggins has already earned a Classic berth and requalified for the Elite Series, so the Southern Open’s outcome doesn’t affect his 2008 eligibility.

Charlie Hartley, 43, of Grove City, Ohio, another Bassmaster Elite Series pro, is gunning for a Classic berth through the Southern Open circuit. While he entered the Wheeler event second in the Open points standings, he tied for 15th place Thursday — still a strong position to capture a Classic spot.

Third in the points race is Mark Davis, 44, of Mount Ida., Ark., but his Thursday showing of 51st place put him in a precarious position to hang on in the top three.

In the co-angler division, Scott Reed of Cary, N.C., led in the competition for $2,000 cash and a Triton/Mercury boat rig valued at $32,000. Reed’s catch of 12 pounds, 2 ounces, bested Fred Hood of Monroe, Ga., who had 11-6. Lee Hannah of Grandville, Mass., was third with 10-9.

Friday and Saturday, launch will be at 6:45 a.m. CT at Decatur’s Ingalls Harbor, where the weigh-in will begin at 3 p.m. CT.
