After The Catch mobile fishing application for the iphoneThe background and reason for creating the After The Catch IPhone application started when I decided to get back in to Bass fishing after a twenty year break. Like most people back when I was a kid my dad introduced me to fishing, my dad was a big hunting and fishing guy. Most of the time I would go to a little creek by our house and would catch some little blue gill and had so much fun. One day I found some plastic worms in my dad's tackle and went to one of the ponds on the golf course we lived on. The pond had a little dam flowing into a small creek. I let that worm drop over that dam and bam I caught this huge bass and I started to pull this monster out and the line broke and the fish was flopping around on some cement pad on the other side of the dam, I jump down head first and grabbed my first largemouth bass with my bare hands. I remember that my knees were bleeding from the cement but that didn't matter I was hooked.

So I just fell in love with Bass fishing. I used to read anything I could find on Bass fishing and Bass Pros and would almost go every day. I kept fishing into my twenties, but I was also an action sports guy, skateboarding, snowboarding, and motocross and soon I didn't fish anymore. I'm in my forties now and a few of my buddies still go fishing and that got me wanting to get back in to fishing. So the idea for the app came from when one of my buddies was over and telling me about the fishing trip he had just went on. So I asked him what he did with the fish and his response was we take pictures of them and throw them back. Well it wasn't right then but a few days later I was at a local pond trying out my new gear and I started thinking how cool it would be if I could use my IPhone to record all of my catches and not just a picture but the location and other info.

I ended up going home that night and started designing what I thought would be the perfect mobile application that would help me keep track of all of my fishing experiences. I started in May 09 and released the first version on App Store at the end of July 09. I've had great responses and feedback from users and the best thing is I get to use the app too. I think that my passion for Bass fishing has helped me make an application that everyone can use.

One of the main goals was to make sure that while out fishing the app was simple, quick and easy to record a new catch with little impact on fishing. The workflow was very important and having as many of the common fields filled in automatically was a big key for ease of use. The next thing was how to do analysis on catches. Filters were added to the fishing log view so the user can sort and filter data based on baits, location, time and more.
