Title: FLBRC BS Room (Summer 2021)
Post by: FD on May 01, 2021, 04:01:33 AM
Yep, you read it right.  Summer of 21.

This is where we will hang, talk smack, and generally keep in touch waiting for the October Kickoff of our 21/22 season.

Congrats Lou on the AOY win. It looks like the Bass Hunter was a game-changer when the water levels weren't good in the glades. Nice month Walt too. I'm always impressed to see what you Hammers can do each month.

Hi guys.
I just wanted to let you know my wife and I bought in Ocala last week (remotely from here in Canada).
Hopefully I'll be able to get down & fish with you all again this winter.
I was looking at the Trophy catch stats and there have been quite a few between Orange Lake, Rodman and
Lake Kerr. All of these are less than an hour away.

Good Lakes and each one is different.

Orange has lots of Hydrilla.

Rodman has lots of tree stumps. Learn it before you start running wide open. Or you'll be sorry.

Kerr is a very clear lake for Florida.

Of the three I have only fished Kerr.

Orange has given up a bunch of double digits in the past 2 years including a 15+ in 2019.

Let me know when you get settled and I'll meet you at Orange. On my bucket list.

I'm with G. I get nervous about buying a new crankbait from Tackle Warehouse unseen. Id have a meltdown if I bought a house without seeing it first. It's a seller's market right now and most houses in my area get multiple offers during the first weekend that the house goes on the market.

Congrats. Lot's of great places to fish. Don't forget about the Harris Chain and all the other lakes in Lake County. They are just a stone's throw away.

Flats I throw a 4" senko a lot when bank fishing because its weedless and has to come through at least 10 feet of shoreline weeds, without getting hung up. If I see the wolf pack hunting, which often happens this time of year, I will throw the senko into the mix, and jerk it fast at a steady pace.  Often they can't resist the fast moving target.  Works for me without treble hooks.  Color doesn't matter, it's a reaction bite. :-*

George,

You and Others may not know this, but some years ago I was watching some Outdoor Show where the Host was fishing around the Tampa Area in Inlet Areas and during part of the Show he talked with and Interviewed Gary Yakomoto.

During that Interview he was asking about the development of the Senko and how did he go about making it. Turns out that From Gary's Own Mouth he said that when he was in the process of the Design, his Intentions was To Make a Soft Plastic Jerk Bait.

It wasn't until after he had a few Packs sent out to some Anglers testing the Bait for him that he found out that most were finding great success just tossing them out and letting them fall.

Funny how one of the Easiest and Efficient ways to catch a Bass was Designed and Made to be used entirely different and almost No One Knows It.
Title: Re: FLBRC BS Room (Summer 2021)
Post by: big g on May 06, 2021, 11:01:30 AM
After years of working the plastic stickbait, I found out how effective these little baits are.  With no weight, or a 1/32 weight I can get the bait to walk along the bottom like a zara spook on the surface with twitch and slack jerks, or dance in place with just very small but quick twitches of the rod tip.  I can fish all levels of the water column, and work it through the thickest cover.  They will catch peacock if jerked fast through an area showing signs of peacock activity.  If this bait gets torn up from catching, just turn it around and your ready to go with a good as new one.  If you have a 6" version and things are tough, just bite off two inches and now you have a 4" model.  When bank fishing I throw this bait more than all the others combined for all the reasons given above.   :)  Almost forgot, they cast a mile even into the wind!

I'm determined to track down bigger bass, and have been craving a big bite battle for a while. Hitting up the Marshlands tomorrow in the bath tub.  lo Last time I was out there the water was very low, if they haven't moved more water in, I'm going to have to get my feet wet and do some wade fishing.  ~sweat ~sweat  ~gator

I fish from the bank almost every week day.  I seldom write a report unless it's something special.  Tonight was one of those nights.  Went out to one of my usual spots, the same as last night that produced a couple of 4 pounders.   Well tonight 200 casts and NADA, not even a bite, or even a nibble.  I have noticed that the lakes around me are topping out with Hydrilla all over the place.  Great for the fish, but not necessarily great for fishing.  Hard to get the bait down in the water column, and since I'm bank fishing a heavier weight just gets caught up in the weeds.  A humbling night!  Where is Lip when you need him! ^-^ >:( ^-^

Mudfish is the only Fish I've ever had on the line that just Snapped the Hook in Half.

It was a Eagle Claw Weedless Hook and I was using it for shiner fishing. A Big Mudfish grabbed it and I got to the boat and wasn't really sure what to do with it., so I grabbed the Hook with my Plyers with the Fish hanging over the side of the Boat and it went to flopping so hard it broke the Hook in half!

Brand New 5/0 Hook. Snapped it like a toothpick.

Well back from Vacation and got out on the River.

Caught 10-12 but only one cull.

Had a Manatee come right up under my boat right under the TM Prop. Used it to scratch its back.

Stayed with me for about 2 hours. Wherever I went it followed and found me again.

Crazy

Also caught two Stripers.

So over all a good day, just no size.

I am here, but I have been working a lot and laying laminate flooring in the living room, dining room, kitchen and hallway and a closet and due to some measuring and a little math all my joints lines up, even around the kitchen and with no transitions  ~shade.  Now I have to put up new baseboard (no quarter round for me) around the whole house minus 1 bedroom.

I have decided to give myself a break and go fight the heat and fish tomorrow at a not so straight lake  :).  I was trying to hold out until we got some rain to cool things off but I can't wait for ever.  My fishing buddy and I have a "Spring Classic" every year and we chipped in and bought a small trophy in January for this one day tourny but due to some family health issues and a death in his family we have not been able to fight it out.......but tomorrow it's on!

Been a messed up month. Killed my trolling motor Sat morning on the river right after I found them stacked up on shad. Got several in the boat but then motor shorted out due to idiots throwing line overboard that wrapped around the shaft letting water past the seal, I think. Pulled about 20 yards out while troubleshooting.

So, I did what anyone else would do and ordered a new MG Tour Pro 36v. I had been wanting GPS spot lock anyway. And, while I was at it ordered an Active Target transducer, too.  Happy early Father's Day and Birthday to me.

But it gets worse. Got home around 11am to find out my BIL (wife's youngest sister's husband) had died Sat morning unexpectedly. He was only 48 and fit as a fiddle but had been in a car wreck 3 months ago that tweaked his back. Had a couple of steroid injections and we're wondering if they maybe caused an embolism that went to his heart or brain. Autopsy isn't back yet.

They have 5 kids all in college at Clemson! He was in investment and insurance business so SIL should be Ok. We had just spent a long weekend with them for a wedding in April and they were coming down here in two weeks for a baby shower. Funeral is in SC Thursday. Wife is already there. So I'm going up Wed.

Hug your wife, kids, significant other. Never know when your number will come up.

Hope to be back on the water soon.

Walt and Lou, thanks for the condolences. Seems to be tougher on the family when out of the blue. Dave was a good dude and great father. We were planning to fish Teneroc while he was here for the baby shower.

Well back from Vacation and got out on the River.

Caught 10-12 but only one cull.

Had a Manatee come right up under my boat right under the TM Prop. Used it to scratch its back.

Stayed with me for about 2 hours. Wherever I went it followed and found me again.

Crazy

Best of luck on the floor project Dave, good luck out there today.

Back in Tampa. Glad to have that trip behind me! Family is doing well and had a great turnout for the service. Standing room only. Thanks for all of the kind words from my UBFL family.

On another note ... got my new trolling motor and Active Target installed and wired in (NMEA and ethernet). Everything seems to be talking.

MG Tour Pro head is huge but the gas shock lift assist make is east to deploy and store. Test run tomorrow morning. Excited about having spot lock and anxious to see if Active Target works as well as advertised because Live Sight sucked (for me and bass) but speck chasers loved it.

Thanks again.

Spot lock is pretty awesome as long as you have some current or a steady wind.  If not mine wanders around over correcting. That's why I went with the 12' Talons.

Good luck in the mud hole today.

Josh is coming out to take his old man fishing.  We are going to play around on some offshore blue gill beds and see if we can run into some big ones.  It's going to be a strike out or homerun kind of day...

I went to the river but water was too low to launch. Damn. They stack up in the middle when it's this low and chase shad.

So, I went to PCMH. Trolling motor worked great but Active Target is frustrating. AT is so much better than Live Sight. Could see fish out to 70ft. Destroying a ball of shad. Wouldn't touch my offerings and that's the frustrating part.

So I quit playing with AT and started throwing a buzzbait for big bites. Caught 10 but only measured the 2 biggest as I was sure I'd find another 19+. Had 2 possibles on but couldn't get them in the boat.

MG Tour Pro 36v is awesome. Anchor mode is great while fighting fish, measuring fish, or changing baits. Played with all the routing options and contour following through my Carbons. Nice that it is steer by wire but the servo motors keep it from spinning out on high speeds.

Lee, you were right, anchor mode is a little jerky with no wind or current but appears to only use the current speed setting so it won't throw you out of the boat like I've heard some of the others will.

All in all a successful trip. Looking forward to next month. Also found out that PCMH opened a new lake that you can use big motor in. Gonna try it out soon.

Not a home run day for us.  Josh wanted to go to Toho so we made the run.  Fished offshore brush piles, shell bars and hydrilla with no luck.  On the way back we made a stop on some near shore hydrilla in Cypress and picked up a few smalls and one 16.5. We called it at noon when the wind died.

My first time on the water seriously fishing or in the heat since since May 1 and I feel ok today.  I might run over to Cypress again this morning for a bit before the heat kicks in.

I was in Lake Harris. The entire water system looks a mix of sand/green color, so I'd say that light is not getting through very easily.

The MLF BPT was just there and most of the fish they caught were the same.

No actually I caught it flipping grass.

I watched the BPT on Live a couple of days and almost everywhere from Griffin to Harris looked like that.

Some of the creeks and canals did not.

Canal and creek fish looked "normal". All the others looked like they were deep or a northern muddy lake.

On Monday I will be flying out to Idaho for 11 days.  The wife and I will be doing some preliminary scouting for some land so we can build a home for retirement.  I still have 6 or 7 years before I retire but I want to check out the area we are thinking about and maybe talk to a builder or two for some basic information about a future build.  With this being said I won't be back for a couple of weeks so you guys catch em up and post a couple of hawgs while I'm gone.   ~cf ~cf

Quite the Jump.

You have family out there or what made you choose Idaho? Just curious.

I have a nephew that is a whizz at Computer Work so much so that he doesn't even be there to fix yours he does it from his home. Several years back he started looking at Montana put an offer in on a place but it fell through. Found another and better place and the move was on from Pa.

While I haven't seen or heard from now in years, the last I did he was living a great life far away from anyone else in peace and quiet. Lives a short distance from Canada and and can walk there is he wants to. Owns a Snow Cat or did to use to get to Town if needed in winter. His Wife and Kids love it there.

We chose Idaho for several reasons.  First and foremost is the wife loves the cold weather and is tired of the heat that is Florida.  Secondly, my wife's best friend bought property and had a cabin built several years ago and we visited and it was a beautiful state.  Finally, even though it does have a state income tax it is very low and the total cost of living index has it ranked as the 6th lowest and for comparison Florida ranks 5th.

We originally planned on looking in the Cascade Idaho area which is about 2hrs north of Boise but the prices are sky high out there now because a lot of people from California moving to that area.  This visit we are Checking out the Idaho falls area.  Prices are a little lower but there will still be beautiful views and wildlife like we are looking for.  We still want to live semi close to a decent size city for healthcare and entertainment reasons, I mean we are not gonna be living "off the grid in a compound"  ;D.

When the time comes I will miss my large mouth bass fishing but there is good small mouth fishing and then I will get back into riding ATVs and a side by side up into the mountains.  Until then, I am happy bass fishing and prepping for retirement.
