I got the fever-BAD. Goals this year-1. 7lb+Lm 2. 5lb+Sm. I have an uphill battle.
I am so jealous right now. :surrender:
I'm relatively new to the Cities, any suggestions of where I should look for early open water?

pre opener-the river. You have alot of great water 20-30minutes west of you.
How much Ice is remaining in your parts? Backwaters on the river are still locked up, as soon as it thaws I will be back there looking for some prespawn bass or panfish. Hopefully this rain helps..

Hitting Pool 4 on Friday as long as I can confirm that the backwaters I want to fish are ice free.
Got the boat out of storage Friday and did a test run in on the river Saturday. Glad to report that everything checked out.

Nice fish! ~c~
My boy and I got out for the first time today and we caught lots of fish. Unfortunately they were all toothy critters. ~xyz Was still great to finally wet a line though.
Nice fish ~c~ ~c~ I have yet to wet a line this year yet but it won't be long now.
I installed the new 'ducer last night and I'm ready for the water again. The weather for Sunday looks lovely and I've got the Crappie spawn on my brain, better go pick up a new ultralight! Anybody else going to chase some fish this weekend?
Not this weekend Craig but will be starting next Tuesday for two weeks. Here Crappie..Crappie ;D Good luck and will be looking for them ;PHO)
I might, I have a new bfs I want to try. Klxmlmf with a daiwa pxl-r, petty sure it will cast a 1/8-1/4oz hair jig, inline spinner(meps). Gl.

Glad the install went smooth. Good luck on the water this weekend.
I'm planning a trip to a small pond with my son this weekend. We will be packing bass gear and panfish stuff in case the bass don't cooperate. ~shade
If all goes as planned, the following weekend we will be heading out for some saltwater fishing. Being relatively inexperienced with the salty side, if enough hours go by and we don't manage a bite or two we will have the freshwater gear in the truck to try and salvage the day. lo
Tight lines to everyone wetting a line. ~fff ~cf

Nothing like taking your son fishing and will be looking for some ;PHO) and reports.
Reports I can do. Pictures have always been a bit of an issue. Just take a look through some of my old threads. :P
My camera is old like me. lo It doesn't have image stabilization and I have a genetically inherited tremor that causes the majority of pictures I take to come out blurry at best. I will try and get my son to snap some. He is like most other 17 year olds, impatient if things don't come out right first time every time. He just wants to go back to fishing. But I will see what I can do. No promises on the pictures, but the reports are a go whether we catch anything or not.

Got no crappie, 1 bluegill, 1 19" bass and she was FAT!
I have to admit my crappie game isn't quite up to par but I was surprised I didn't see any panfish up shallow but I could see bass cruising. Water temps in our backwater area was 54*, Water was extremely clear.

Does anyone know the reasoning behind the different restrictions on pool 4?
sorry, computer froze up..... what I meant to get at is can you fish bass any time there is open water, and if so why is it different?
On Pool 4 and Lake Pepin bass fishing is open year round with a 14'' minimum length. Same with Pool 2 however P2 is catch and release only. As for why it's different... I couldn't say for certain, might want to call the DNR ((888) 646‑6367) and see what they say, although I doubt it has anything to do with conservation based on any scientific studies. ~b~
10 more days, 10 MORE DAYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Almost can't believe were almost there, everything is right in the world.
How did everyone's "official" opener go? I was down on Pool 4 of the river in Wabasha. My partner and I found a few keepers including a 4.5# largemouth and a 14'' crappie. We also saw a pirate ship cruise by lo

That ship is very cool! My season so far has been frustrating! Been out 4 times, got my limit only once, and been getting whopped by a buddy in the back of the boat. Went to swamp 3 times and even made it to trophy and I still suck. Every year it's the same, I either have a great start and suck at end, or I suck at start and have a great end. Bummer. Heard phil finally pulled a W, it's been really bothering him he couldn't win.
Went to Bald Eagle last night for two hrs. Got 3 pike and 1 bass, Saw several abandoned beds in the shallows, 1 bed with a fish on it that swam away immediately. 74* water temps. Fishing was tough, definitely some sort of post spawn funk, at least that's my excuse.
I stopped by Waconia yesterday afternoon and pulled four 1-2lb'ers out of the reeds. I was fishing from shore though so it was tough go.
60°F water temps on Mille Lacs. Pretty sure the smallies are spawning. Our best luck was fishing Rock mixed with Reeds for SM and channels off the main lake for LM

Hope our patterns hold together for next weekend.
The warm weather this weekend should only make them better
Nice fish Craig ~c~ and good luck next weekend RRR
Went to swamp Sunday and broke my bad luck streak. 25 total, top 5 went 20,19,19,18,18". Like normal I had to junk fish most the day, but the last 90min I had a 1-2 punch pattern going. I did feel bad about the 5lber thou, another angler and I were facing each other, trolling motors at full speed racing for a dock and laydown, he got there first, I pulled back, he caught nothing, pulled out, I pulled in, first cast at the laydown= giant, dude watched the whole thing, he was not happy.
good things come to those who wait. ;D
Got out for a couple hours with Tim Yesterday. I did a really good job at netting and taking pictures of fish. lo Dropshot and frog where the winners.

where did you guys go? My season is a disaster, if I didn't have a senko or swim jig, I'd be worthless!
ODowd, got there at 6:45AM and the parking lot was full ~b~ That place must get alot of pressure. Our best 5 probably came in around 14#. Oddly enough I couldn't get bit on a Swim Jig or a Senko haha
Yeah, you have to be There by sunrise or your waiting. It gets beat up but it's a small parking lot, there are giants in there, it's where I caught my 7lber.

Some nice looking Bass. ~c~ ~c~
Some nice fish RRR. Went to swamp saturday, it went well, my top 5 went 19,18,18,17,17 and about 15 15-16"ers. Saw something strange thou, the main lake already flipped, 70% of the vegetation disappeared, very weird, that's not suppose to happen until fall?
Was it Curly Leaf that disappeared?
That happens when the water temps gets to the low 80s.
Bizarre, I still need to make my way out there. It's a hour and 20 minute drive from my house though so I always find and excuse to stay closer. :'(
Craig, we'll go during fall time, that's when it gets crazy. I've never seen that vegetation flip like that there, only when fall comes and every lake flips, very strange. Soooo many bait fish everywhere, all day, just looked exactly like how it looks come fall. Even saw a 30" walleye floating dead, it was huge, looked like a prop hit it, half it's face was gone.
I was out this morning, sure felt like Fall! Windy and cool out. Fishing was decent, got 12-15 with the biggest being 19in and I think the smallest was 10in! Caught a few on a DT Fat1 and lipless, but most came on a jig later in the morning. Water Dropped from 73 on Thurs, to 68-69 this morning. Fall is just around the corner. ~cf

Yeah, It always comes quicker than a guy thinks! I figure we got over 2 months yet to fish. Maybe a little longer if you don't deer hunt. Once it locks up, then it is time for the ice gear to come out!
Around here, after fall is when the fun starts. ~bb
The dog and I made it out last night for a few hours. Funny, couldn't buy a bite on a jig this time. Scraped up a few on a lipless and a few more on the DT Fat1 in shallow. Biggest, an 18incher came on the Fat. Water temp moved back up to 74.
The lake really greened up from last time out. Even had that thick Blue/Green scum on it in spots :shocking:. I was hoping the dog wouldn't jump in, he's on edge about every splash he sees! Landing a fish is always an adventure with him trying to help me out.

Anybody going somewhere cool this weekend? I'm heading to the swamp, haven't been there in about 6 weeks, weather looking good!
I'll be up in Hubbard county all of next week chasing some dark green northern bass! They're a little prettier up there, compared to some of the pale ones I get down here. Dark green backs and dark black lines! Hopefully the cabin chores and tourist stuff don't take up to much fishing time. ~cf

when you going, Saturday/Sunday? There's a small chance I was going there on Sunday.
Saturday morning.
Gl craig, go get'um! From what I read about that lake, most tournaments are won anywhere from 13-18lbs.
Found a few but didn't lay waste to them like I had hoped. Coolest part of the day was when I found a good looking spot on my Side Imaging and I could see 3 fish away from the weed edge. Threw a dropshot out and got 2 of them on back to back casts.. Other than that it was pretty slow. Water temps 67-68. Big one came on a jig that I tossed in after it missed my buzz bait.

Went out this morning on a local lake, before heading up north tomorrow. Was kinda slow, only could squeeze out 6. Funny, each one was caught on a different bait. Even got one on a dropshot, which I stink at. ~gf

Thanks for the report and glad you were able to catch six even if it wasn't on the sane bait. ~c~ ~c~

Hey Dan, that's still a good day. And the important thing is the fish don't know that you stink at it. lo
Got 5hrs in at swamp yesterday, top 5 went 19" 18 18 18 16, main lake started to flip, water was very very dirty, 3 weeks it will be $.

Let's go either the 19th or 20th. We can take either boat
Probably couldn't go that weekend, ( wedding anniversary). Maybe week before or week after.
Well, made it back from up nordt and did manage to get out fishing a few times. It was slower than I hoped, but still better than a week at work! Did get one nice one at 4lb 10oz in the slop. Got a few on a frog, but got the one on a 1oz jig fished under the pads. Was a little hot and humid up there, glad it is cooling down again.

Your picture doesn't show up for me. ~b~
What's the best way to do a pic on here?
I tried an attachment like this before, but then I have to click on it?
Thanks.

I see it now. I don't know what the "best" way to put pictures up is, but I generally upload my pictures to photobucket and then share the direct link. Seems to work for me

Lame, Tim and I probably had 9#'s between us. We talked to Lee earlier in the morning and I don't think he was doing much better.
I liked how the lake looked, vegetation, structure, depth, boat docks, cold front just shut them down, plus I didn't get contour lines there, did you?
Yea contour shows up on my Lakemaster
Fishing hasn't been to good for me lately, needed a confidence builder, and I got it! Got 5 hrs in yesterday at swamp, top 5 went 20",19,19,18,18- next five went 17,17,17,17,16, not bad at all. Got 5lber and a few shallow on swim jig, and pitching jigs, got most in 12' on a crankbait, also got 4 30"+ pike cranking.
Sounds like a great day out!
I got about a dozen or more 20inchers this past weekend. Couldn't keep the things away. Too bad they were Hammerhandle Pike! Didn't loose any lures, but they hacked off alot of grub tails, frog legs and craw claws.
Ruddyduck, how big is that bass in your avatar? That thing looks stupid big!
I was hamming it up for the camera a bit and did shove it out! I didn't measure back then, but it went a hair over 5 on the old Deliar. My buddy had a different brand spring scale with and it went a 1/4+ more on that. I didn't believe his and just called it 5. Now I got a board and Rapala scale, but I think I should just go back to a cheap scale as some times they don't weigh as much as I hope they do!
Got a pretty good one during a tournament yesterday. It bit on a drop shot in ~15fow. I didn't have my net out so I boat flipped it on 8# line and a ML rod hahaha, I need to get in the habit of keeping my net out when I'm using spinning rods. Another funny thing happened, I caught a keeper on a jig that had a red hook and tungsten dropshot weight stuck in the roof of it's mouth. Since I was sharing the same shoreline with another person fishing the tournament I asked them at the weigh-in if he got broke off during the day...Then returned his lost gear :)

You know it, Let me know when and if I should haul my boat up there
I'll know if I can go by friday, as of right now looks like I'll have time to go on sunday. Your boat, my boat, doesn't matter to me.
Met earldogg out on the lake with a buddy. No super tankers where caught by us but we did get a few solid bass. It was a chilly morning, my trucks temp gauge said 38*F and the wind out of the East didn't help.

Wind from the West, fish bite the best :). Wind from the East, fish bite the least ???. Think that is how it goes anyways.
Thanks for the report and glad y'all caught a few ~c~ ~c~ I miss smallie fishing :'( Oh well next year when I head to the North Country I will get a chance to hook up with a lot of fish I haven't fish for in many years. ~c~ ~c~

It was a grind, tough day, I only got 7 in 7 hrs, saw big ones, no takers thou.
Ok, guys I don't want to make this the dreaded "guess the weight", but I was out Monday afternoon and caught too many northern and this one bass....problem is I was in my canoe and forgot a scale! I tried to hold it as close to myself as possible (it was against my sweatshirt) to keep perspective. The second picture with my size 12 shoe is for reference. Any guess on weight? It was for sure a PR for me!

Hard to tell what a fish weighs by picture only, I'd guess 4 1/2-5lbs.
Length×length×girth÷1200 will give a fairly close weight.gl
Still a great looking fish. ~c~ ~c~
If it pulled the canoe around pretty good, then I'll guess 5-5. If not, then I'm going with 4-7! Nice fish :)
Always hard to tell from the picture, but it's a hell of a fish either way
Been a little quite here, anyone been getting out? Went to Pool 2 last Saturday and we ended up with something like 2 Smallmouth, 3 Walleye, 2 Whitebass, a Sauger and a Drum. Most of the fish came on Crankbaits.

Nice looking fish ~c~ ~c~ Hope y'all kept them walleyes for the table. ;D
I was out this past Fri and Sat. It was slow for me. Got 3 on Friday and 2 on Sat. Biggest was a little over 18in. I blame it on the 27 degree morning low Sat and my poor skills! Wish I could of gotten out today.
Phil and I went to the Rum Saturday, and as RD said, it was COLD! Got a few, but no giants. My quest for my first 4lb+ smallie continues.

This time of year I don't like getting on the water before 10AM. Lets the water warm up at least a little bit.

Was that stupid car show going on? I went there last year and it was a cluster ~xyz if you want a 4# smallie you're going to the wrong place. Tim and I took last Wednesday off, it was slow fishing but he got his 4# smallie (picture doesn't do it justice, I think it was 4.15 on my scale). That makes his personal best Smallie and Walleye out of my boat in the last week, I think I'm going to start charging him a guide fee ~roflmao

Nice smallie.
Well, who is getting out this weekend as we near the end here? Weather actually looks good.
I think I got Saturday in the clear for most of the day! Could be my last weekend out :(, since I will be Deer chasing the next two weekends after that. Maybe with El Nino though, we might be Bass fishing later this year!
Heading to Mille Lacs again Sunday
Last weekend for me too, probably rum river in anoka, gl!
Hoping to get to Mille Lacs at least 2 more times.
Then the River in Monticello all winter long.
Had a great day on rum Sunday, top 5 went 20",19h,19h,18h,18!, about 21lbs of smallies, not bad for in the metro. My top 4 were the biggest I ever caught.
Sounds like a good outing!
I didn't have such good luck. Went out Sat. after the drizzle ended and couldn't get a bite for the first hour or more. Almost went home. Then finally found a few all in one area. Ended up with 6 bass, nothing big, 3.5lb was the biggest. Also were alot of pike with them and wound up with about 10 of those. Guess they provided some extra action.
Sunday I went with a buddy figuring with the warmer temps it might get better. We got only 4 pike and I managed only one 3lb bass at the end to avoid a total shut out. Oh well, the other option was to stay home and deal with a visiting mother in law! Not really a tough choice there.
Good luck to anyone fishing the next couple weeks, I'll be in the Deer Stand. Weather looks a little warm for hunting, but good for fishing.
Went to rum today, crushed them! Got 35 in 5 hrs, lost 10 at the boat-almost 50! Top 5 went 19,19,19,19,19. Unbelievable day.
Sounds like a fun day Andy.
Sent you a PM.
