Need advice on which of my Dobyns baitcast rods to use for trying 1-3/8 oz plus glide baits (S-Waver 168 and Gantarel Jr) and Whopper Plopper 130.  The rods I have to choose from are:

  Fury 734C, MH-Fast
  Champion 735C H-Fast (frog rod)
Champion 744C H-Ex Fast (jig rod)

I also a 736CB Glass, but it usually has a chatterbait tied on.

Based on the options presented, and lures mentioned, I would go with the CH 735

The 736cb glass can handle the weight not so sure the 735 is going to hold up with that much weight. There is a reason Gary developed rods just for swimbaits, they take a whole different action and power to cast and to keep fish pinned.

would check the rod rating.  I run two rods that I love ... very similar... but one is rated for 3/8 - 3/4 ounce.  the other 1/2 - 3.0 ounce baits.
I will toss up to about 2.0 ounce baits on that rod (river2sea s-waver 168)... but go to 8 foot heavy for bigger.   and a special dobyns rod for even larger stuff (currently love tossing the 8 inch magdraft on this rod)
will get some of the s-waver 200's this year.  wanting/needing that much wider path...

I'm using an 806CB for Glides up to 2oz. I hadn't thought about using it for ploppers, I'm going to try it.

The 735C is rated 1/4 - 1 1/2 oz.  The S-Waver is heaviest of the 3 at 1 5/8 oz.  So I'll see how I do with the 735C.  An added advantage to the 735C is having one setup that will handle 1 3/8+ glides and ploppers as well as frogs.

If catch is good enough that I'll be fishing a lot of the heavy glides and ploppers, I'll pickup a 795 or 806, or might go with an inshore baitcast rod that can also be used for SW.

Thanks for the input.

PM, I make no secret that I use Powell rods.  matter of fact, historically, they have Gary Dobyns in their pedigree...  that being said
I toss the 801  (heavy, 8 foot, xfast action).  throw the big spro rats on it.  umbrella rigs.  some bigger swimbaits.  I go with the dobyns rod for swimbaits most often because of it's softer action and the way those fish take the swimbaits (have to let them eat it...).

it'll work.
