Garry wanted to upgrade the Savvy. Instead of the confusion that comes with marketing the new "upgraded version" versus the older version. He renamed it to help keep everything smoother.

The upgraded rod is called the Sierra. It has all the same actions as the Savvy Series, but with better blanks, guides, and cork.

They do have a limited number in the shop. As soon as I can get them to send me a photo, I'll get it posted.

This is what Garry has told me about it so far, "Same actions as old Savvy. Better guides ( Fuji Alconite ) Better cork ( Portugal AA grade ), slightly better and adjusted blank, and a whole new look. Very clean look. We have no pics yet but will have some soon. A better rod at same exact price as old Savvy."

Hoping to get my hands on one soon to do a review :-*

All I can say is soon. It's against the Dobyns Rods rules for me to call the shop on Mondays  :'( they are busy with customers and retailers, getting orders and deliveries of new rods. Now tomorrow we can harrass Gary about getting this announcement rolling :-*

Already ordered one  :)

Glad they kept the cursive insignia. Miss it on the XP and HP models.

If I had any say in the company this is what I would have done.

Fury - small variety for budget guys, beginners and tournament workhorses. Expand spinning lineup.

Savvy - Eliminate it all together or make upgrades and pull it from Bass. Make it a multi species line up.

Champion - Moving baits only, all moderate and moderate/fast tapers

Extreme - Top Shelf bottom contact rods.

Zayta - Enthusiast Bracket.

And instead of having several Swimbait Rods across all models come out with a new line that's all Swimbait rods. From budget to enthusiast.

Those are great ideas Dam0007 and I like them. But you'd only be targeting anglers with a lot of money. It would leave budget anglers out of some technique specific rods.

The Champion series is the backbone of Dobyns Rods. It has every possible rod. It's sensitive enough for bottom work and quick enough for moving baits, with glass rods to cover those enthusiast (I love glass for top water). So an angler can fill his deck with excellent rods for every bait presentation and stay in what I think is a great price for the amazing quality.

I agree the Extreme's sensitivity is wasted on moving baits. However some anglers need or appreciate how light they are. I've actually come to enjoy the sensitivity in my shallow cranking. The feel is so good I can crawl a squarebill through the nastiest brush and the sensitivity helps me determine a light strike from a limb that gives slightly.

Swimbaits rods are definitely a bracket all their own  :surrender: you have to keep in mind over all cost. Having 12-16 swim bait rods from budget to topshelf all made from different amounts of material can get expensive quickly. Minimum orders on a specific blend might prevent this from being cost effective. Where as using the same blend as the fury line for the budget angler, and the same blends from the Extreme line for the enthusiast, allows a company to keep over all costs of the rod down for the customer.

I know Gary adds rods to the Fury line because there is a large portion of anglers that can't drop two to three bills for a quality rod. He doesn't want to short those anglers from certain actions just because they can't afford an upgraded line. This process takes time though.

What's great for us as consumers is how fast the quality of the Fury and Seirra line is improving. Gary is finding ways to make these two lines very impressive for a hundred dollar line  ~c~

Yea my idea isn't bulletproof and would take a lot of thought and work to implement. It would basically re structure the entire company. I could go on for hours on all the ways to work it. But most importantly bring back the cursive insignia lol I love uniformity lol

Im running
4 Furys
1 Savvy Micro
8 Champs
5 DXs

Love em all :)

Sounds like a dx-sierra would be a good set up for contact and moving.

703 came in and as usual build quality is excellent! Blank feels pretty good pitching in the yard just to test the tip. Wraps, guides, epoxy all clean. The color regardless of what LMG says is cool. Unless my eyes are going on me it looks like NC blue with a splash of green. Almost like a mint type color. Great Rod and great value. Not crazy about the reel seat but to each his own.

i am really lucky here in Baltimore we have a local tackle shop that has only been in business for the last six months. He is the only dealer for several manufacturers around here, so when I go there (like Yesterday) I get to play with lots of goodies not available elsewhere. Since we have a Bass Pro only 20 minutes away, he concentrates his invetory on "the other brands" which include Irod, Dobyns, G Loomis, Cashon, Powell ,Duckett, NO.8, Powell and others.  I got to play with a few of the Dobyns Sierras as well as some Fury, and even a few Champion xp rods.  I truly like the Sierra rods best. I love their feel and looks, I just wish the handles were split grip like the Fury rods. It's just my preference. At least one of them is going to end up on my deck soon!

Check out the Dobyns Link on the right side of the page. There are split grip models as well. Have your dealer order the action you like when your ready  :-*

Did you have time to fish this rod yet? How does it compare to the champ line for moving baits?

I believe a Sierra 693 spinning rod is going to magically go home with me soon. I have some sencos calling for it. I got to put it in my hand yesterday. Wow...  Mike have you had that rod in your hands yet? Gary did a nice job!

No sir I haven't. Unfortunately I'm behind on getting some rods ordered. So I don't have any Seirra models yet, but that will change soon  :-*

Keep us posted once you get a reel on it and make a few casts  :-*
