Illinois and Missouri Walleye

If you like walleye, here are two good walleye lakes no one ever mentions.

Carlyle Lake: east central Illinois about a one hour drive from St. Louis. The lake was stocked with millions of walleye by the DNR, The walleye are grossly under fished. The lake is known as a crappie lake with a decent population of white bass. The best walleye spots are near the dam, near the train trestles and near the grain silos in the middle of the lake. Walleye also follow the old Kaskaskia River channel snaking through the lake. Large numbers of Sauger also inhabit the lake.

Lake of the Ozarks: central Missouri and 2.5 hours from St. Louis. Known as an elite bass lake with large numbers of crappie, the lake also has walleye throughout it's length. The walleye were placed by the DNR and the program was considered a failure. However, the walleye established a breeding population without anyone noticing they were spreading through the lake. Most walleye are caught by crappie anglers fishing from the docks. The best spots are off windy points or when power is being generated. On electronics, they look like a school of large fish always moving and staying around deep forage schools. There are few anglers who fish for walleye on LOZ.

Wizard there are a good number and even some nice sized Walleye in Lake Shelbyville also. We always catch some on our Roadrunners while Crappie fishing.
