Title: Red River Bass Fishing Report - Feb. 5
Post by: Mike Noble on February 05, 2006, 06:06:30 PM
Fished the TCTC tournament today with Fogy and only managed one fish.  It came on a rattle trap on about the 5th or 6th cast Fogy made.  No bites the rest of the day.  Wind was pretty tough.  Water temps ran about 52 - 53.  Some good sacks were brought to the scales, can't wait to read those reports.

Was fishing so terrible that no one can post the results or how they did?  I'm deployed, but still like to know how everyone did.  Greg

Well it was cold yesterday!  Nothing like having frost on your boat and running 65mph up river, thank god we didn't have far to go.  1st spot we stopped at about the 4th or 5th cast hooked a nice 2.5 or better bass. "(I think it went 2.92 but BA will correct me if I'm wrong"  Picked it up off a nice grass ledge sitting in 13 to 15 foot of water casting to 4ft.  & that was it for the day.  Went back several times to re try the ledge and got a bite but no hook ups.  Used a 1/2 onz chrome and blue trap to hook the fish & through everything else in the boat just to check and see how they worked in water cause they sure as hell didn't catch anything.

Brent and I made the slightly long ,very cold run to the extreme end of Port Lake .We started out throwing spinnerbaits for the first 10 minutes but tied on XPS black and silver lipless cranks. We had three keepers in the first hour and picked off one about every hour after that in a tiny stretch of open water close to a duckblind. All fish were caught in 4 foot or less. We did get one on a spinnerbait around noon off of a laydown. Batteries were real weak about 1:15 so we headed in early and ate a burger. We weighed five fish for just under 8 pounds .

Trey and I had a spot that we had caught 10 wednesday just a little bankline with lots of wood.
We fished it until 12:30 with one fish, then made a run to another spot and caught 2 more . all came on traps.
Trolling motor was pretty much gone as we had been in the worst of the wind all day.

Fishing was tough. Caught a few early on traps in grass. Caught 3-4 more on jigs and tubes throughout the day on wind blown areas w/ timber and grass in 10-12 foot water with access to shallow water. Water color dictated bait colors, muddy= black and blue, stained = more realistic colors like watermelon and pumpkin. Fish were tight to cover.  Slow rolling a blade also produced a few fish. All buck bass, one kicker. Fishing was tough.

Me and Kennyp fished the TCTC also and got 3 bites for 5.41. One on a DT4 crankbait and one on a 1/4 oz white spinnerbait. Kenny got one on a 1/4 oz white/chart. spinnerbait. All where in 3-5 feet of water around stickups. The wind threw off my game plan, just couldn't keep the boat steal long enough to fish the ledges that we wanted too. Congrats to the winners.

Shawn & I fished the tourney also. Started out running south to just before the dam. NOTHING! Locked through & hit several jetty tips that usually hold a fish or two...NOTHING! Ran farther south & fished an oxbow & quite a few laydowns & brush tops...NOTHING! Ran back up river & fished Caspianna...NOTHING!

We tried spinnerbaits, several colors of rattletraps & crankbaits, tubes, baby brush hawgs...STILL NOTHIN!

And then to top off a wonderful day of river fishing we nailed a log while running back to the launch. Motor sounded really bad right afterwards but once I cranked it back up, all seemed to be fine, Luckily!

A buddy and I went to pool 4 yesterday and fought the  ~xyz wind and the rude  ^-^ other boaters cutting us off to the few spots we could find out of the wind.
Still we only got two bites and didn't put either in the boat.

I do carry a 357 in my boat. and if my son is not in the boat it is not a good idea to cut me off. ~an~ I will go around them and get 5 feet from their boat and just fish like I do not even see them.
