Title: Trying to understand US Politics
Post by: Drake691 on June 11, 2013, 03:21:07 PM
I've had to learn about the Electoral college for a speech I had to write for school. Man, It is the dumbest system. These 2 videos helped because trying to read about it will give you an aneurysm

Agreed, I used to devote time to finding a better way other than straight vote counting ( that would never be allowed) if you come up with something simple and fair, let us know  ~c~

The Electoral college is the only way to keep our country from becoming run by CA

May not be the best but sure in hell is better than a king or a socialist state

I used to teach this stuff to young minds full of mush. To be honest, I've waivered on the Electoral College myself. In the end, though, history proves Ron is spot on. It ain't perfect, but the fathers knew what they were doing. A pure democracy is mob rule and doomed to catastrophic failure. Either way, only the folks who've defended this nation and our constitution with their lives and the citizens who've paid taxes all of their lives and voted have a say in the matter.

Not to change the subject, but brave as our armed forces are, asking them to swear an oath where they say BOTH " I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic" AND " I will obey the orders of the President of the United States" is just setting them up to break that oath.

I'm sorry but defending the nation and defending the Constitution rarely go hand in hand.  There hasn't been a military adventure since WW2 where the Constitution has even been considered.  We have spineless leaders who are willing to send our best off to die but they aren't even willing to fulfill their Constitutional duties and declare a war.  How could they?  They'd have to commit to something other than spending their "subjects" lives and treasure!

So to try to get it back on subject, if you don't like the electoral college, don't worry.  Pretty soon, the media will pretend like it's the most popular thing to change it, and we will.  But of course, ("popular" as it is) we won't change it according to the rules described in our Constitution and make an amendment - oh no, that would be far too much work for something that's so "obviously popular" (per the media) that it would instantly pass.  We'll just ignore the old way or worse have 9 robed demons chant it away and move on to some giant mob rule.
