Title: Black Bayou Benton Sylvania...
Post by: bassadict69 on September 26, 2013, 09:20:51 AM
Thought I would start another post rather than us jump into the Bisteneau conversation.

This lake has a huge current in it when water is high and flowing over the dam. I am with Mike, I think it will pull 99% of any sylvania over the dam.

Last week the sylvania was concentrated at the north end...Saturday, after the rains, it was floating past the launch, so yes, it is getting blown all over the lake. I live on the dam side of the bridge and have not yet seen any on this end.

Unfortunately, like you said it only gets 99% so it will come back every summer. However even if you got it all out, wildlife and fisherman will bring it back. It's fortunate that the lake has it's on built in control for this stuff.

The major issue with it being in Black Bayou Benton is the Red Chute down stream, I can see in future summers it being completely covered an killing life in the deeper holes it sustains.

it's turning brown on the north end. If it is dead will it sink or just float around dead?
Title: Re: Black Bayou Benton Sylvania...

It will float for a while but eventually sink. The rains we had, should they keep coming should start some flow in the lake. I know it was pretty low, but driving over the bridge it looked like it came up a bunch, not sure where that puts it on the spill way though.

Once the water level starts going over the spill way again, it will start moving.

I will run down and get a pic of the spillway showing how much water is needed to flow over...if not tonight will go out tomorrow.

judging by my bankline and dock, it has a LONG way to go!

Water is normally up to the washed out place in the bank, or at least close to it. Before the rain we got, the posts you see at the corner of the dock were high and dry!

Wow :shocking:

For some reason I thought we had plenty of rain this year. I know August was dry but June and July had plenty.

You all must like mowing too much and sucked it dry with the sprinklers.  :'(

Gonna be a while, from the road it looked like it was doing a lot better.

I cannot say I remember ever seeing it get as low as it did this summer unless it was at the beginning of a drawdown when they had the gates open.

Big write up about the sylvania on BB and Cypress in the Bossier Press Tribune on Friday Sept,22.  They had a meeting last Thursday about it.  It is going to be a lot worse than many of you think. I really don't think it will all just float away or vanish by some mystical river current.  PoPo PoPo PoPo PoPo PoPo PoPo PoPo PoPo.  If you want to fish the North end during the spawn next year, you better bring your punching rods!!!! ~c~ ~c~ ~c~ ~c~ ~c~ ~c~ ~c~

Have faith my brother have faith. There are no trees to block it, the only thing that can slow it down is the boat docks and it can float under around or through them.

You'll be fine.

Don't get me wrong, every lake in NW Louisiana will always have salvania now. However lakes like Black Bayou and Cypress will self regulate. IFFFFFFFF they quick screwing with them. The reason it got as bad as it did this year was because of previous year draw downs. Leave the lake full for a year and see what happens.

I will be posting a report submitted by LWF about salvania and if you read it, I think you'll feel a lot better about your lake. It be in LA Chat.

note: as soon as I get it, there seems to be a delay In the mean time read up about Bisteneau, pay attention to the tree distribution, current, and available shore line and the effects those three have on salvania, then look at BBB

You are probably right.  I sure hope so, because we are on that lake every weekend.

I've got my fingers crossed but after all it is Salvania :surrender:

I just didn't realize how low it was, that is the worst thing for it. Start doing the Indian rain dance

I talked to someone in front of my dock this morning that said WLF was on the lake and they had someone spraying the sylvania. He said he seen the spray boat working their way around the banks north of the launch spraying as they went. By time I got free enough to jump in the boat to go check it out, it was well after lunch and I never did see anyone, although I did not go past the hard left at the north end.

Went out today to black bayou. Coon tail moss was bad. Caught 8 unders. North end was hard fishing

Coon tail is a good thing. It will dye off easily this winter. Grow back in the spring to protect the spawn :-* If the salvania gets to bad before winter flush, it will kill the coon tail, so it's good to hear it's still thriving.

Not sure what coontail moss is, but the green slimy moss is a nightmare this year!

Coontail is more like hydrilla but in single stems. It's not the snot stuff

It's good to know coon tail moss is a good thing. Any recommendation for fishing that stuff. I was thinking frog in areas that were not to deep (2-5 ft) over the moss. Any suggestions?

Frog is always my first choice. A buzz bait can be awesome if they are being picky, it draws a reaction strike. Punching it can be very effective. If its not surfaced or sparse a spinnerbait or fluke.

They have been running the salvinia mowing machine on the north end this week.  Talked to them when I came off the lake yesterday.  They are supposed to be out there the next couple of days.
Hopefully it will get a lot of it cleared out.
Also talked to one of the commission folks.  Said there is a leak in the dam for Black Bayou which is the reason the water level will not stay up after the rains.  Supposed to have the problem worked on to get the leak stopped in the next two weeks.  Hope they get it fixed....

That interesting news on the water level. Thanks.

Didn't know that about the dam. That's not good news, in order to flush the lake of the salvania it's has to go over the spill way :surrender:

I may have to beach the boat tomorrow and walk over the levee and check it out. Will be sure to carry a rod also, used to whack the bass pretty good over there!  :-*

Is that the only way to get to the back side of the spill way right there. I imagine you could go over to cypress and follow it back :-\

You can park at the Cypress Parks Rd launch and walk across the street and down to it.

The lake looked pretty full today, even before most of this rain.  Maybe they fixed the leak, or Mike stuck a finger in the hole.  In the dam!

Not real sure about that...we have always gone down there and when we park at the launch and walk across the street, the only thing we get in trouble for is not paying to park at the launch!  lo

Bear with me, I'm telling you of any lake in the area, Black Bayou Benton will be just fine. Cypress was covered in the stuff two falls ago, by spring you couldn't find any. The rains will make it all better I promise. Just rest your wittle head on your pillow, it will all be better in the morning.

Now Hoston and Caddo might be in trouble. Hosston is moving a lot of it over the damn but there are acres of water that are out of the main flow of that lake and the stuff never leaves it, the wind can't push it out. I fear we have lost an amazing big fish factory there.

If you want to worry, just because it's in your nature, those two are in trouble.

That would be losing the two best big fish factories in the local area......pray for cold ass weather.  One good hard winter with a few weeks of freezing weather would do wonders for the lakes...

Guys I got to thinking about this and I don't want to give the wrong impression. I do totally believe that Black Bayou Benton will be fine. With a normal winter, water and temperatures, I think it will flush it's self and be fine. BUT that doesn't mean we as anglers should keep quiet about it. If you see this stuff anywhere it needs to be reported. We need to be vigilant, keep talking about it, we need to do our part as well. That means making sure we keep from transporting it.

There is enough influence and money living around Black Bayou Benton to make a difference. Land owners there could make the right calls and get some extra help in there. As anglers, when you come across the land owners on their docks, ask them about it. Ask them what they think, make sure they know how invasive it is. If the land owners get worried, they will start making calls!!! Make sure they know who to call!!!!

Same goes for Cypress.

I don't know if it's the spraying, the water mower, or the recent cold spell...but Black Bayou is looking much better.  It's probably a combination of all three.  A month ago, I went out in my jon boat and you couldn't even see the water back on the West end.  I went back there today and was able to go all the way back through the channel.  This is 100% better than it was a month ago.  I know it's always going to be a problem, but I felt much better after poking around back there today.  Actually seeing the water back there completely made up for my bad fishing luck today.  Bring on the cold.

Wow yeah that looks a LOT better!! :-) Must have had some good water flow out out of that creek to push it towards the main body and over the dam.

the wind and high water pushed and scattered it out of the west end creek area.  It has not made its way under the bridge though so it can't float over the spillway
