Title: Question about tires
Post by: jonboy on October 03, 2013, 10:05:52 PM
Since this is the only forum I post on I was hoping there might be a knowledgeable guy that could answer a question for me. I just purchased some cooper discoverer ST maxx tires and had them installed on my 06 Tacoma. I had Mickey Thompson MTZ 305 70 R16 and the truck handled fine. I went to a 285 75 and they handle like crap. There is a tone of rollover when I turn. Its like I am riding on jello, when I turn the wheel there is a delay before the truck turns. So my question is, Is this the nature of the tire or is it because I have 285's on 10 inch rims? The only real difference between the old and new tires is the new ones are 3/4 of an inch narrower.

The 75s have a taller sidewall than the 70 series. And if you've got them on 10" wide rims I'm guessing the tread width is smaller than that. Tread width should be at least the same as the rim width.

^ That plus, they could just be a softer tire... softer compounds will have more roll.

I just put Toyo Open Country A/T II's 285x70r17's on my F150 stock rims and I dont feel any roll with them.

What psi are you running in them? I have Toyo M/T 33x12.5 on 20x9 wheels. Drives great. Just wondering if the sidewall is flexing too much under side load and needs more pressure.

That's a good point K2. I think I'm running 35 in mine.

Jonboy put 70psi in them coopers and see if that helps, the wheels are way to wide for a 75 series tire. you should have them on no more than a 8in wheel. When I had my 4 runner I had put some 49 swampers on 15x14in rims and it rode like I was on marbles changed to 15x20 rims and it was a totally different truck.
