I recently bought one and LOVE it, looking forward to getting it in the boat and may try some underwater shots as well.  Mostly looking to fire it up when we get into a good school can film some catches.

It's not hard to use, I just need some time learning to put video to music and there are some you tube videos on this to help out.

I've done some underwater video with mine.  It takes a lot of practice to get a decent video.  Thats not the cameras fault.  Go Pro's are neat and easy to use.

I have the Hero 2 but don't know if they are still available.  The waterproof cases work well, I was worried about submerging the camera but have not had any issues.  I haven't looked at any other models but have heard good things about the Hero 3.

I'd go with the Hero 3 black.   Its the one I bought.  I really like it.  The overall camera is about 2 times better.  Especially the video and pictures.  Wifi remote is cool too.  Especially if you hook it up in the back of your boat.

Got the white version for Christmas and messed around with it.  Be glad when it warms up enough to attach the bases in the boat.  GoPro suggests 60+ for the adhesive to secure properly.  You will want extra batteries.  Amazon has Wasabi's that I've heard good things.
I am going with the case that allows attaching the car charger, don't have to worry about batteries.  But will loose water proofing.  Also need to get an additional lense cover, some reason it doesn't come with the case!?!
