I just bought a spinning rod (Duckett Micro Magic 7 foot ML) designed for up to 1/4 oz. I am pairing it with a Shimano Symetre 2500. I was thinking of putting braid on it, Power Pro 8 but what size? Or should I use a different line for drop shotting or other light weights?
I run braid as a backer on my dropshot. I have a large leader of FC....like 15/20 yards. I use 30lb for braid and 6-8lb for my FC.
Braid is extremely hard to manage for me on a drop shot. Lots of line wrapping etc when you catch fish. I also find it hard to see in the varying light conditions or backgrounds when casting. I also find it a pain in the ass to tie with in lighter weights with small hooks. You can get greater distance casting with braid, but with drop shots I don't cast far enough to use 40 yards.
I personally have gone to using straight braid for all of my drop-shotting - No more flouro or leaders. Since I would be using a leader of either 6 or 8 lb. flouro I just use 6 or 8 pound braid. IMO the smaller diameter of the braid gives the lure a more natural action. The one thing I do in this situation is use a sinking braid to keep any bowing out of the line. I feel that it helps me detect bites better. I prefer the Spiderwire Ultracast Flouro Braid in Hi-Viz, but I hear very good things about the Suffix 832 line also.
Just my $.02
I like 6 pound floro for drop shooting because I like the action better, if you can achieve that action you want with braid then that's you. FCC over mono for hook sets
I run 10lb braid with a 2-3ft leader of 8lb flouro, love it.
I use 12lb fluorocarbon.
