Title: Epoxy
Post by: addison_smith17 on October 16, 2014, 11:11:32 AM
What epoxy do you guys use for crank baits? I have been using the gorilla glue 2 part epoxy which is ok and it works but it is a pain in the but to use because if how thick it is. I wanna use something that is much thinner and makes a smoother coat. So I just was wondering what you guys use? Thanks a ton!

30min 2 part epoxy from the hardware store. It has to be 30min or more. Don't get the 5 min stuff.

And yeah the gorilla I don't like.

This stuff is still a little thick but, it's easier to put on & smooths out nice when it dries.

ok gotcha. So you say this stuff is pretty good? It isn't too thick? I mean the gorilla glue is like overly thick. It works but it doesn't work great by any means.

Yeah it's pretty good. It's what several people I know use so that's why I used it. It's not thin like paint but it's not super thick like glue.

I've been using Devcon brand for many years & it works fine for me. I don't coat crankbaits, but have done hundreds of fly rod poppers of various sizes.

I agree with the 30 min or more set time type. That's been my experience as well. Those times I've tried using 5 minute it never came out as I wanted. The stuff sets too fast & often turns yellow.

You can thin epoxy with alcohol for coatings & prolong the setting a bit. I prefer to use ethyl alcohol (camp stove fuel), but isopropyl will work too. Isopropyl alcohol will often cause the epoxy mixture to turn a milky color due to the water in the alcohol, but it will still work. Depending on how much you're mixing at one time, only need a couple of drops of the alcohol.

If you're working with epoxy, get some cheap pipettes or eye droppers for adding the alcohol.
