Title: Tough Steering
Post by: Bud Kennedy on September 14, 2015, 01:21:53 PM
The steering on the old ranger is just tough.  Gonna have to go to the Gym pretty soon if I can find a way to loosen this up a bit.  I don't have power steering but maybe that needs to be a future consideration.  Perhaps there is a way to adjust the steering cables.  I have no idea how to do that.

Besides the normal lubing and all my friend just had a huge issue w his steering as well. A piece of metal had broken off on his steering arm at the console and he replaced that part and it worked fine. Will see if I can get a pic of it from him.

Cost $125 but it fixed it.

My Old Ranger had the cables and it started getting pretty stiff , even worse when the weather turned colder. I tried greasing the racks under the column and the tube and spraying back into the cables . It would get slightly better but was good for a month or two. I sold it like that and told the purchaser when he bought it. Saw him a few months later on the lake and he had replaced them. Probably going to be the only route in the long run IMO.

Mine on the old Nitro got tight and one day I bumped a submerged stump and I lost the steering , it has broken a tooth in the box beneath the dash.
I replaced the unit for around $ 100.
I did have to unbolt the motor and move it slightly yo re-insert the new cable end.
It was not a big job and it made it steer like new again..

Started to take the steering assy apart at the motor but realized I did not have any more 3/8x24 nuts with the nylon insert.  Went to Lowes and Home depot and no luck.  So I will leave it alone until I can get some.  I did clean the rods and applied new lithium grease but I really need to take the entire assy. apart and give it a good cleaning.  Haven't looked up under the console yet.  Good idea so I will do that tomorrow.
