I will be heading down to Miami this coming weekend. Looking forward to fishing here. I have never caught a Peacock Bass & would really love to do so. Can anyone throw some local spots my way please? Any parks, canals, ponds or lakes would help. All accessible by foot please. I'll be staying in the South Miami Heights area if this helps.

The further south you go, your chances for a big peacock get better. Behind the falls shopping center there is a canal that usually have big peacock. Right by Miami airport is a big lake with a park. There are places to fish there with lots of peacock. Small white and yellow spinnerbaits and small lures with prop baits, then #9 rapala stick baits in gold are good. Bright sun at mid day are great times. Plastics will catch large mouth but usually not peacock. They like stuff moving fast, so rip and jerk the baits. Good luck!
Tropical Park has some decent size peacocks, though the places George stated may hold some bigger ones. A lot of the canals down here have peacocks. Look for pilings and man made structures. They tend to cling to those.
Like George mentioned fast moving baits. If you see a pea trailing your bait, don't slow it down. If you do, they usually lose interest and swim away.
Many times you also have to harass the peacock into biting. You can cast past them several times before they decide to strike. Eventually they come furious and just smash your bait.
Almost any freshwater lake or canal down here will have Peacock Bass. All the spots mentioned above are great and are worth trying. Another place you should consider is the Kendall area, that whole area is loaded with Peacock Bass.

That is very true. I had a monster Pea chase a deep diving crank. This pond is small, really small but it is DEEP! I mean it's like a black abyss type of deep. Out of that insane deep this huge peacock comes out chasing my lure, I made one mistake. I slowed it down...that Peacock turned right around and went back into the darkness.

Those deep ponds saved a lot of Peas during the big freeze several years ago. The deep water did not flux as much as the shallow bodies of water. Many of the deep ponds are spring feed and a constant temp summer or winter. We are assured a sound population of these wonderful game fish because of these deep sanctuaries. A big Pea is something special, as soon as you set the hook you know its not a black bass. They are fish with an attitude!!!!! ~c~ ~c~ ~c~
