Can't say I have any problem requiring viagra...

Out here fishing, and I've discovered I apparently hurt my shoulder, AND my elbow, a bit worse than I thought.

I did splurge a bit and got myself a new cast net. Holy cow! $30? So I've got a baby bluegill dangling below a bobber. Not a whole lot of cast and retrieve going on here. After tossing that cast net the first time, I considered just saying hang it all and heading in. But my lady caught a fighting little dink, so she immediately started enjoying herself.

Tres, how do you like the Grass Pig? I had heard that the tail doesn't have as much action as others. I've never tried it and usually fish the Bitters version.

Flats,
I like it just fine. The last few weeks, most of my bites have been on these or similar baits - whatever's on sale! I've caught fish on Bitter's, Charlies, and Grass Pigs. The plastic used in the Pig is different, more supple. I feel like the action on all of them is pretty similar. I've been buzzing them across vegetation for the most part, but have also gotten a few fishing them just under the surface in more open water.

Is white your go to color? My go to color is bluegill or watermelon if I'm fishing clear water. I've never tried buzzing them on top. I fish them on a weighted swim bait hook. I will have to try buzzing them.

Hey guys what's up?

This job sure keeps me hopping and worn out when I get home! At least it only lasts for about 4 months or so. I am hoping to get out and fish tomorrow morning for a few hours.

Next week I'm heading out to Mobile AL on Monday then building 4 stores in 4 days and coming home from somewhere in LA on Saturday.

Talk about throwing this old man into the fire! After being retired and not working for 5 years to busting it 45-55 hours a week or more is quite a change. Depending on how things pan out I might consider doing it again next year or just find a PT Job working 3 days a week all year long. Both have their advantages.

Heck of a Job on winning last month Tress, and a great start to this month.

After things get back to normal we need to get together, we're not that far apart.

Flats I have the grass pig and it's a decent swimbait but I find it lacks action. Also because of its round shape I think it tends to wobble more than other swimbaits.
But they are the cheapest swimbait out there.

I personally prefer the Gambler Swimmers, the Bitters or the Reaction Innovation swimbaits.
That's just personal preference though. With the grass pig being under 3 bucks a pack I suggest you try a pack of them and see if you like them.

I do like the white/pearl colors, especially when the sun is out. When buzzing them, I'm not sure how much color makes a difference though. It's a reaction strike (except when they come from across the pond - those are obviously feeding fish). The reason I like these type baits for buzzing, especially in super thick pads, is how easily they come through vegetation. Typically, I throw a horny toad for this presentation, but they don't stay on the hook as well as a swimmer. I also like speed worms for this, too. But, with the way the legs on a toad, and the tail on a speedworm face forward, they are more apt to grab the edges and hearts of pads. The boot tail on a swimmer is more streamlined. It doesn't kick up quite the ruckus of a toad, but sometimes a slightly more subtle buzz works better. Plus, when you do hit an open spot and let the bait sink, it looks very natural.

Get back to it? Lol, all it did was slow me down!
Caught a dink yesterday morning and this morning, my lady caught a few dinks and two pretty nice little bass.

We did have a scare last night. Took the crew out to a nearby boat ramp for some night fishing with lightup bobbers. Round midnight my daughter mentions, "it sure is getting foggy out here..."
I pulled out my Mini-Mag LED to see just how foggy it was.
Our bobbers were only about 15-10 feet from the bank. And directly on the other side of our bobbers?
"Where'd that log come from? THOSE ARE EYES!"

I bet y'all'd never seen four folks set such a record grabbing their crap and getting the hell out of dodge. The kids were GONE before I got my bobber out the water.

They sure do. Last close encounter I had with one was a small one that'd gotten curious. He was sitting just a few feet away in the water, about my 8 o'clock position, when I got ready to paddle my pirogue back to the bank after fishing a dead spot for about an hour. I didn't notice him until I almost smacked him in the head with the paddle. Scared the hell outta both of us. Only about 3' long, but I swear in those moments of splashing and cussing, he was every bit of 30 feet.

They are curious critters. That's probably all there was to it the other night, just wanted to see what the flashy thingies were.

The youngest asked me "is there ANY place we can fish around here that ain't got gators?"
I told him, "Boy, around here if you spit on the ground and come back the next day you'll find a gator trying to swim in it."

Some days I swear they're almost as thick as skeeters. Going to get a hunting license soon and may get a couple tags for gator sometime.

When I was a kid my grandparents lived on the Little Manatee river. Every year there there were a couple that would get a little too comfortable around people and would get a sudden case of lead poisoning followed by a crisco bath.   The     big lizards don't seem to hang around my house very long either. I don't know why.....

I've had a lot of respect for those creatures, but after my last confrontation with one of them, respect has turned to fear. When you are on your jon boat deck and a gator comes up from the bottom of the canal right next to the gunwale, nice and slow with its mouth wide open, and chomps at you...you learn to fear those things lol.

Lip why did you have to tell my secrets lol.

About the gator, I bet it was the light up bobbers, I was fishing with them years ago off a dock. The bobber started moving slowly away.. then went less bright but wasn't under the water. We had a 3 footer that was attacking them lol

Once, years ago, my buddy and I pulled his Gheenoe up to a nest with about an 8' momma and her hatchlings. You'd think the mom would have been aggressive with us and defended the nest, but she just swam off, leaving us to play with the 6" babies. It was fun, they're kinda cute when they're that small.

Having been scared often enough by them lately, my feelings have turned to a guarded indifference. I still don't like surprises. Except for the one that tried to chase me down on dry land this past mother's day, they haven't paid me much mind beyond coming by just to see what kind of shenanigans I'm up to.
But, their teeth are bigger than mine, they're faster than me in the water, dang near faster on land, so I still give them as wide a berth as practical and keep a wary eye on them whenever I see one.

Hey, Fred. Sorry I didn't reply right away. Yes, let's definitely get together soon.

I will be watching the advisories today, tomorrow's advisories are going to really tell us the what's really going to happen. Nonetheless we are going to be impacted somehow. How bad? We will see soon enough.

I'm inland Lip. The Keys have been told to evacuate, and Miami Bch may be ordered to do the same by tomorrow. Schools are closed after tomorrow. Next few days are going to be intense and no one is taking this storm lightly. The entire state FL is going to be effected.

We did a little prepping. Picked up lawn items and such. Got some water, food, filled the truck up. Gonna fill the RV water tank and bath tubs and washing machine for potable water like flushing the toilets and such. We are on city water so hopefully we won't have to worry like Charlie when the family well was useless without power. We also have a generator that runs on propane tied into our house. So we will have power, at least for a little while. The stove and hot water heater run off gas also so we can cook.

Now two days of work and more prepping on Friday.

Oh and grab some cash guys. So you can buy gas and stuff if the debit machines are down.

Stay safe everyone!

Bought gas and water, also looking to book a room somewhere in Georgia that is refundable. Good idea on the cash thing too. Also, part of my prep is to fish Thursday. You know how the bite picks up before a big storm!

All of you in south Florida be safe. Looking now like just a little wind and rain for Tampa. I'm going to try and fish Saturday and/or Sunday and see if the approaching weather turns them on. I bought water, charcoal, batteries, propane and camping food (viennas, saltines, spam, chips, etc...) last Saturday ahead of the rush so I'm good to go should it get nasty.

If any of you end up in Tampa area, let me know. I can offer you shelter, food and beer.

Well out work trip we cut short. We were in Baton Rouge LA when they wanted us to stay another day and do the 3rd store before heading the 11+ hr drive home, oh and home we get there in time to take care of our homes.

The Boss told them he wasn't happy about that so they told us to finish this store and head home. We made it to Tallahassee when we pulled in for the night at 1:30 am. Got up ready to leave at 9 and they called while we were leaving and wanted to know where we were. They had decided to have us bring some plywood back to Orlando in case it was needed.

4 hours later we had a rented trailer and 44 sheets of plywood loaded and were on our way.

Got in kind of late last night and had some trouble getting gas on the way home but made it. I got my boards up today and everything else we needed to hold us over should we loose power, which we have before with these.  One of them we were out of power for a week.

Not sure if we are working to prep stores tomorrow or not.

Right now the UPdate says the center will hit us just east of Key West as a Cat 5, then again below Tampa as a Cat 4. Then will cross the state west of Orlando sort of following I-75. However the strongest winds and rains are on the Right Side of the storm and that is where we will be. supposed to hit 75-100 mph wind gusts.

Hope all you are ready, stay safe.

Lou, Rick, the rest of Miami crew. It's looking like you guys are getting slightly spared...not to downplay it, and I'm sure you will be getting some serious conditions, but at least not the full brunt. If you have time, we'd love to hear any updates as the storm passes by.

So far it looks like the Miami area was spared from a direct hit compared to 24 hours ago. We are staying vigilant but the majority of the models have the storm going through the Gulf side. Anyway you dice it, many FL UB members are going to be severely effected by this storm in the next 12 to 24 hours. I will stay in touch as long as I can. Thanks for following up Tress.

I know the fishing has been tuff down there lately but was just wondering how much this storm was going to mess it up even more.

Fished Hillsborough from 9 till noon just to unwind from the storm. Caught 3, measured 1. Water has been pulled down for Irma. Which is good for fishing, and bad for launching. In the attached picture of me loading, normal pool is bottom of the rail board on the dock. Anyway, going back early tomorrow since work is essential personnel only and I'm not.

Definitely not essential. I'm retired Navy and work as a contractor at US Special  Operations Command. Only the guys still in uniform are essential.

Fished Weston tonight for about an hour.  Caught five bass in the 12 to 14 inch size.  The one good thing about the storm is it tore up and blew all the the thick surface weeds and the lakes are back to a normal surface look.  Water is up about a foot from normal pool.  It was good to cast a bait after almost a week off.  I almost felt back to normal, at least for a little while. ???

I fished the dock a few times in the past few days, before and after the storm. No luck.

Most the vegetation was ripped out and blown onto shore. Our dock had a piece broke off. The neighbors new dock and some others on the lake are all destroyed so I am definitely grateful. Or house has roof damage and we tarpped it. Might need some new drywall in the ceiling in a few rooms and some matting and shingles.

RV and vehicles had no issue. Small part of the fence broke and hit the RV, just a small dent. I already fixed the fence.

The last pic is the new dock missing the screen. To the left of it had a walled room on the end of the dock.. as you can see it is missing, the roof was on the shore.

Finally got home last night, when to check on my boat, and was happy that it suffered no damage. But I was floored by how high the water level was in previously low low Orange Lake.  My pontoon boat almost hit the roof of the dock! I took some pics the next day. Now, if only those infamous Orange Lake floating islands weren't blocking me in, I could see if the water level has helped the bass fishing. It took me a while and several days of  skunkings ( if that's even a word... Lol) but I finally caught a fish. It was the only fish in my last 4 bank fishing outings. She slammed a spinnerbait right along the bank less than 6ft from where I was standing.

My lures do not change too much  through out the year. I will say, in the winter months I focus on jig fishing a little more.

I went fishing today at the same area I went to yesterday and the water dropped at least a foot. Unfortunately I skunked on catching a bass, but I was fortunate enough to catch myself a big Jag that was just shy of the state record.

Awesome Jag Lou!!

Pssh I haven't caught a fish since the last one I posted lol

I haven't been fishing much though with the channel and OT at work.

Roof said best to replace but it could be patched. They put mat over a few spots till they fix it for free. Great guys. I tipped them for the honesty and free help.

We have dry wall that needs replaced on the ceiling and mold in the pantry.

Looks like.it might be over our deductible.. not sure yet. Ugh..

Say it ain't so Tress! Try some night time bassin. Went out tonite (now it is this morning) and caught 6, posted 4 that were more than 12 inches. Caught them all on a weightless black/blue laminate Yum! dinger t-rigged and weightless except the first two I caught were on a dark blue creature-craw fished the same way, but I lost my last bait on the second one and switched to the dinger. They were hungry, hooked two of them deeper in the mouth than usual, none on the lips. The biggest was a little more than 16 inches. Solid fish, good fight. In fact, all were really good battlers except for a 14 that was real sick looking.

Well I did something yesterday that must have resulted in my back having a fit. It's decided to spasm since late last night after tightening up earlier in the evening. This morning I woke up with knife stabbing pain in my lower back. Time to ibprofen , apply some anti inflammatory cream and rest.
Haven't had these in a while.  I guess that's my body reminding me I've got 3 herniated disks.

Lou nice jag! I think that counts even though it isn't a bass. You technically didn't skunk lol

Fished the Swamp tonight from 5:30 till after dark. First cast, caught a dink on a Storm Arashi square bill. This stoked me, because I hadn't caught one on a crank in quite awhile. Kept throwing it, and added 6 more, including one that culled. Flipped one out of some bushes, then, moved back to the south end of the lake where I caught a bunch earlier this month. Same pattern, just before dark the bite turned on, and I was able to get 7 more throwing a tx rigged worm. Culled the previous fish, and got one more that culled as well. The debris line around the lake showed how high the water had been after Irma, but levels have returned to normal, and so has the fishing. Overall, it's been a slow month, and without this lake I'd have a terrible stringer. Still gonna be hard to get 100 this month, as I will be out of town from Friday till probably around Thursday next week.

Hit my pond today where I caught the six lber. Hot and sunny, water level was high but not as high as I expected. Irma blew away all the pond scum, yaay. Tossing a t rigged yum dinger in bream color, it's a pumpkin and blue laminate.
Tossed it into some weeds parallel to the bank, worked it over the top letting it drop into holes when pow a nice 14 incher crushed it, barely has to hook it myself, but of course I gave it a good second set. About ten casts later threw it out into the middle of the pond and let it fall. After an eight count line started tightening. Counted to three and crossed the eyes of a fighting 16 inch bassie. Hooked right in the top of the mouth, textbook. Had to go and pick up the yungins.
Culled one, added one, good trip.

Looks like Tress and Lou are in a head to head battle for this month's lead. Close close close. Just returned from Minnesota. Saw my folks, sister/brother-in-law and kids, and a couple aunts and uncles. Also ventured to Grand Casino Mille Lacs on Sunday for the final weigh in for Bassmaster AOL. Exciting time for Keith Combs (he won the tourney), Dustin Connell (he took home ROY), and Brandon Palaniuk (he took home AOY). Got to meet and take pictures with Brandon and Keith before they weighed in. Fun times. Looks like I need to go catch a couple of keepers this weekend to get on the board here. What are your top producing baits this month??

My playground has been nice to me these last few days, today I just wrapped up with 10 fish caught but no culls.

Welcome back Swede, spending time with the family is always fun.
As far as answering your question in regards to what has been my most productive baits this month I will have to say the frog and the centipede.

Hi Swede, sounds like you had an amazing trip. Glad you're back.
For me, all the fish in my stringer have come on a good ole' Tx rigged worm, 1/4 oz weight. Speed worms and Culprit ribbontails. Doesn't really matter what kind of worm, or color. Deadstick presentation. Also, caught a few buzzing a skinny dipper type swimbait, various mfrs. Frog and squarebill have caught a few as well.

@ Cport, I want to apologize to you and everyone else that follows this thread. I realize that I leave out a lot of details when I post individual catches versus my boating reports. I have taken for granted my bank fishing outings and assume what I do everyone else does. But like you said Cport, details!! Although my fishing techniques are second nature to me, my details could be of great benefit for someone else just starting out.

With that being said, over the last several days I have been fishing a neighborhood park close to my house. The particular lake I have been fishing on is a traditional FL lake, that's basically bowl shape. The types of vegetation varies here, from sparse spatter dock, sprouting hydrilla pockets, to other types of grasses.

Lately, finesse presentations have been working for me. I use a 7ft St. Croix Premiere Spinning rod, Medium action with a fast tip and a Shimano Saros reel with 8lb copoly or mono I can't remember exactly. A light lead and EWG hooks that vary 2/0-3/0. As far as how I'm working this bait, I don't over work the bait. I work it gently over and through the grass. You have to be in tune with a grass tap and a fish tap, or else you will be setting on everything...  lo  I enjoy fishing this way from time to time because any bass will make that M rod bend. Yesterdays 20.75" hit like a freight train and made 3 long runs making the drag zing!!

When handling and fighting bigger fish, you have to keep in mind that 8lb line is very thin. Horsing a fish around will result in the line breaking very easily. You need to let your equipment work for you. Allow the reel and rod to work for you in tandem. Finesse outfits can handle big fish very easily in open water if you let them.

I think I covered the basics. If anyone has specific questions you can just ask.

Again, sorry for keeping my techniques so close to the vest.

Lou

Lou, you're having a great month. I don't want to jynx you (well, maybe just a little, lol), but it would take a miracle for me to catch you at this point. Going out of town till late next week, and when I get back, if I have time to fish, I frankly can't think of anywhere I have confidence in culling up. Good work, and thanks for the info on your techniques.

Thank you Tress. I have been around this game long enough to know that if there is time left on the board it's still anyone's ballgame. Especially knowing you still have 2 full days to make something happen when you return. All I can do is keep plugging away til the end of the month.

Thanks Lou for that great report. I personally have really s-l-o-w-e-d down my retrieve, working my stickbait by letting it fall/sit 20 to 30 secs on the cast (it's amazing
how many bass will hit a stupid piece of rubber sitting still), then twitch a couple of times and let it sit for a five to ten count. It seems that I have had a few less but better fish doing this.

It was a good day of fishing today. Caught 11 total from 7:30am to 11:30am. Most were in the 13-14 inch range. A few smaller ones and one bigger.
Caught them all on Uvibes. A few hit on top burning the uvibe, some hit swimming at a decent pace, and others hit swimming at a slower pace. The 22.25" fish hit it at a slow crawl.

Been a while since I caught that many fish and a couple months since I put a 4+ lber on the bank.

Slowing down to a certain extent can yield bigger fish. Smaller fish love a twitchy, bouncing fast moving bait. The bigger ones I have caught with soft plastics have generally been dragging a worm, or a slow crawling retrieve.

You gotta remember, I fish small ponds from the bank, so I can still cover lots of water and fish slow at the same time . I'm looking forward to learning how to cover water efficiently; I have a boat on Orange Lake I will be taking out more, and that lake is huge! I will need to eliminate unproductive water on a grand scale, so I will be paying close attention. Any bait recommendations for this? I am mostly loaded with plastics in my tackle bag, a few cranks, some swimbaits, and one lonely spinnerbait.

I throw a swimbait 75% of the time. If they're biting, you'll know fast. I'll frog early or if it is overcast. Bluebird skys, I find hydrilla in deep water or mats and start punching. Moving water fish, like we talked about above, I'll throw rattle trap, chatter bait or jerk bait. Schoolies, nothing beats a fluke. And if I have to, I'll talon down and drown worms. :)

Thanks. I found some fish by the ramp behind the Air Museum. Lots of damaged docks and many submerged due to water being so high. Must be a good lake for specks because that's what all the other boats were after.

I wish I could just get my old boat out of the gate and down the back driveway just to go fishing. Until I get a bigger chain saw or the insurance company approves the damage caused by this tree my boat is stuck.

Thanks hurricane Irma for putting a hold on my fishing!

But hey, one thing good to come out of this... one of my parking spots just outside this gate for my Toyota 4runner is now under this fallen tree. I am thankful my 4runner was not sitting there during hurricane Irma! And you can't see it too well, but just outside the gate on the right is a small trailer crushed under that old tree. Hopefully insurance will pay for that and the new roof on the old barn in the background...

For those who can fish... tight lines!

Josh and I hit Grape Hammock around 9.  The place looks great considering.  They have moved the office shack to the east side of the ramp because they're building a new office in the old location.

The water is still up 3 ft from normal. The river is running at at least 5 mph. My 36 volt TM would not hold position in the current. There is so much vegetation gone the south end does not look the same.

We started outside of Jacks and picked up a couple small ones and moved north to 27 palms. Most of my land marks are gone. 75% of Big Grassy is gone. Tried fishing around the channel marker but the weather had picked up and it was rough. Went down the west wall and the outside 100 yards of grass is missing. Ducked in behind Brahma island to get out of the wind and picked 10 small ones on the outside edges in about an hour.

Fished from 9 to 1 and caught 12. All in quiet water, all on a slow presentation of the vibe worm. Not at all what I expected. These fish are messed up and not likely to be better anytime soon. The classic may be a challenge.

Kissimmee is down almost a foot since Sunday but Toho is still a foot above control. As fast as they are pulling Kissimmee down, the current should be manageable by next weekend. The only problem is the heavy rain forecast starting Saturday and continuing all week.

The bass were on fire yesterday at my canal spot at SeaWorld Orlando. They hit on almost everything I threw at them. I did not get any hits on a rattle trap.

I targeted the bass 3 ways bank fishing the canal.

The first way was in watching schools of baitfish swim in both directions up and down the canal. They created a unique wake on the surface that was easily identifiable and every once in a while a bass would hit on them picking some off. So I would then target that actively feeding bass and caught a couple that way.

The second way I targeted some bass was across the canal was a spillover concrete water shoot with a small amount of water flowing across it into the canal.

So I used a rubber worm and a swimming fluke and would cast it across the canal and land it on the concrete and work it into the canal slowly as if it were food coming in with the incoming water. I caught two bass back to back that were sitting there waiting for food to come into the canal at that location. But after catching those two bass in that same spot I did not catch another bass there the rest of the evening.

So the third way I targeted feeding bass in the canal was to work lures parallel to the bank and close to the bank. I used a spinner, a swimbait, and rubber worm and fluke. One nice bass came off the bank and nailed the spinner zipping by. He was a fun one who put up the best fight of the day.

The rest of them came from working weedless rubber across the lily pads slowly. It was lots of fun and I got to watch screaming tourists ride the roller coaster at SeaWorld while fishing surrounded by woods in my own private little world. I hope they never develop this place next to SeaWorld.

Is that the canal that runs parallel to International Drive? I fished that with a frog and got nothing but gar. I fished at this spot (marker):

The canal runs right along the fence line of the park.

Chris I fish South of that location. Across Central Florida Parkway. I access it off I-Drive easily seen from google satellite. Same water though...

I have fished it for years and never caught any gar. It is an enjoyable location near the crazy tourist world. A site surrounded by woods in the middle of lala land! I love it there when working in the area. A nice, peaceful getaway surrounded by tourists... on the other side of the woods.

I went fishing at my playground today at around 430pm. I went to a bigger lake at first, and there were hundreds of bait fish around. Behind the bait fish were bass hunting them. I couldn't coax these fish to bite, so with a lot of time left on the clock I moved to the smaller lake. I began to notice a lot of activity along the shore line until I figured out the bass were staging along the grass line pointing towards the bank, ambushing bait.
I began casting my centipede between the grass line and the bank and the fishing was none stop for close to 45 min. Then the bite slowed down. As time started to wind down I starting heading to my car until I decided to make one more cast out towards the middle of the lake. As soon as the rings settled, the line started moving outwards. I set the hook, and the fight began. She gave me 4 strong runs with drag peeling on each run, until I was able to turn her towards the bank and finally land her. I was using  my M, Fast, rod again with freshly spooled 10lb mono.

No, but I have seen others fish the canal from that parking lot. Get back out on I-Drive, head South and just past Moe's SW Grill are some woods, and then a small utility building, probably a lift station or water pump facility. I pull in there and drive around the little building around behind it and park there or just drive down along the canal.

It is a great place to bass fish in the middle of crazy tourist area. And while fishing you can look right up the canal towards SeaWorld and watch the tourists ride the roller coaster for added entertainment while fishing.

It is kind of strange sometimes having Disney's Epcot and SeaWorld roller coasters for fishing background visuals.

Lip you are right. There are a ton of restaurants in that area. The best one's are on SandLake Road on the west side of I-4. Big money over there and one high end restaurant after another over there. And the crazy crowds and traffic to go along with it.

Congrats on the 100 Lou!

Got it, I know exactly where you are talking about! I stopped there and fished at night last time we were visiting Disney, I was staying about 12 minutes away. Didn't catch any, but it was night and you know how that can go. Lots of pads, especially where the two canals meet, looks real fishy. I'd like to fish it early morning some time, maybe next time we are down there hangin with Mickey.

Thanks guys!! I don't hit the CC often, but when I do, its special. All my culls came from bank fishing, which is why hitting the CC this time around was special. Culling from the bank can be pretty challenging, I have/had a gameplan in mind, and staying mentally focused to cull 17.5" and 18.5" fish was not easy. I still have a couple days left, and hopefully I can capitalize on this momentum.  ~sweat ~sweat

How is it challenging to you? I find that the most challenging aspect is being mindful of your backcast area and the, for lack of a better term, "rod zone" to keep the bait and/or my rod from hitting brush, grass, maiden cane, etc during my cast. I've got a lot more mindful of it since snapping a few rods, but sometimes when I am trying to chase a boil or rethrow quickly to a missed take, I forget to check.

And congrats on the CC  ~c~ ~c~ ~c~ . Its what I strive for. I have to fish better waters, my larger fish are few and far between.

Great question Cport. The challenging aspect for me, was in targeting bigger fish from the bank.   You hear often, big bait bigger fish, and I believe that. In this case however, I had to stick with my game plan that a small thin 4" piece of plastic was going to accomplish this for me. I usually try to catch my big fish from my boat, and this time around the situation changed and had to change strategies. Cport, when your CC day arrives, and it will, you will quickly understand what I'm trying to say. Culling fish from the bank with bigger fish can be quite challenging when your fishing locations are limited.

That part I definitely agree with. Limited time is an issue for me as well, coupled with the limited amount of rods. This translates into time consuming reties if you want to try different baits and limited techniques; with a boat, you have a readily available arsenal that can be simply picked up and deployed.

Thanks. I found some fish by the ramp behind the Air Museum. Lots of damaged docks and many submerged due to water being so high. Must be a good lake for specks because that's what all the other boats were after.
I have heard it is. I live just a few miles from it and have caught a few fish in the pocket in the NW corner and some off the point on the SW (depending if wind isn't terrible on it)

I have fished those docks you are talking about and have yet to find many. I have picked up one at the unused ramp behind the air field.

The NW corner has always been better to me.

Also Lake Tennessee just south of it gets a lot less pressure and holds a ton of fish. You have to back in off the road though. Nice ramp once backed in.

Sorry I am late to the party but awesome Peacock Lou and Congrats on the century club!!

I have been slammed with the channel and work due to the Hurricane and I am very much looking forward to slowing down for a weekend at Kissimmee! We hit 1000 subscribers last weekend actually and are doing pretty well.

A little advice for the new Kissimmee people, don't throw anything blue. The water is just about clear and dark baits are useless. Frogs just don't work neither do uvibes, flipping, or spinnerbaits. The best bait is a bumble gum wacky rig on 2lb mono.. lolol Don't bring any rod over ultra light or braid at all.. I hope this "helps". Fred ignore everything I said you know what works there!

West there is a Ramp on the Deltona side of lake Monroe that is like that. You have to park across the road to get ready then back straight across the road to get to the ramp. Got to watch for traffic as it is pretty good in that area.

Dumbest part is the re-did the ramp after 2004 hurricanes when the water was way up. So they didn't dredge the water way out. Now the high dollar Floating Ramps they put in set on the bottom most of the time and there is a small trail bored out by motors that lets you get in and out.

I don't use it much and have never with the new boat. Doubt I ever will.

Those are the Gold Mine lakes to find. No one outside of the residents fish them and not many of them do.

BTW, Your advise for the New Guys at Kissimmee is spot on. 2 lb test and that Bubblegum Worm is killer there. I wouldn't even think of throwing a Black/Blue Swimjig or a Gambler EZ Swimmer in Watermelon there. Never throw a UVibe worm Or Flip with anything. Waste of time.

And with the water running don't throw anything shiny or that rattles.
And never, under any circumstances, swim this just under the pads in 6 feet of water t-rigged on a 5/0 ewg with a pegged 3/8 oz weight.   You will go minutes between bites.

Critters...

I went out to the park today to see if I could get lucky and put a few fish on the bank. Mostly was to test out the new frog rod. It took a while to get my first fish. There was NO topwater activity at all. But I decided I was going to force feed them a frog, like it or not. From 7 am to 9 am nothing. At 9:05am I cast near some pads into somewhat open water. There was a mix of eel grass and hydrilla submerged. The Booyah frog in Aqua color or psychedelic as I call it, hit the water and instantly this fish blew up on it with an intent to massacre the frog. Drag was almost tighten down all the way and it surged a few times and pulled some line but I was able to power it and keep it hooked.

Then I went on another lul. It was obvious they did not want the frog, and they weren't going distances to get it. If it happened to land on top of them then maybe they would hit. Some time later I cast my Booyah in Cricket color on a transition area where I've had some success. Pad field stops because of a drop off and then the deeper water has eel grass. Casting along that transition seems to be a good way to catch fish. Another very nice fish came out of the water 2-3 feet in the air and just plowed the frog. I set the hook and got the fish up bringing it in through pads, eventually it surged hard, pulled just enough drag even though it was locked down, to get it into a weave of pads and stems. At this point I tried to change my angle and get it unwedged but man its hard to get a bucketmouth out of pad stems. I loosened the drag enough to see if the fish would back track and get itself unstuck but instead it managed to wiggle free and get the frog unhooked.
That fish would have put me over 100" for sure

But on I went. Eventually I switched to a Rage Tail Cut R worm, caught a 17 inch bass near the bank.

Then I hooked into an 18.5" which felt much bigger. Between eel grass and pads I brought in at least 15lbs. This time I wasn't going to give it any slack. I forced this fish out of the bottom through all vegetation.

In the end it was a great day of fishing. I got to put the rod to work, and was very happy with it, and I hit 99" for the month. I would have kept going but my back was letting me know it was time to go.

Thanks Lou! Yeah I hope it catches me some on Kissimmee as well.

It certainly does hold some nice fish. They don't show themselves very often but I think there is a decent population 4-5lbers in there. I've caught several this year. There is so much water we can't even get to from the bank. Who knows whats living in those areas.

I agree with your assessment. Based on what I saw the time we fished your location, there are so many areas big girls can be hiding in that no one can ever get close enough to threaten them.

Nice outing Rick! Wish I was there to see the blow up. Hope this trend continues

Thanks! Yeah it would have been cool to hang out again. Maybe you could have had your own blow up lol.

Rick,
Great outing and report!
If I were you, I would take some pain killers and hit the park again. You still have an hour of sunlight and that 100 mark is so close...

Hillsborough river mini report. Overcast. Water temp 81f. Level 2ft high. 5mph current in main channel. Found a slough with little current and fish bunched up eating baby tilapia.
Caught 19 and left with them still biting to take of some stuff before the classic. Missed/lost twice as many as I caught. All caught on Zoom super fluke. Color didn't seem to matter. All fish 12-16in and fat. Pattern will be repeatable at Kissimmee if there is still some flow.  (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170930/87a5be749a4656fd0042652ced166ab2.jpg)

May go back in the morning to get Oct started. Maybe some bigger ones will move in to feed.

Trust me I thought about it. I almost did but I don't want to force it. I've got a 2 day Tournament to win in a week. I'll need to be able to fish lol.

Awesome catches this month, Rick. That last one was a stud. Lou, if Rick is serious about not going back out, congratulations on the win. You deserve it, and had a great month.
Can't say I didn't go down swinging. Hit Lake "C" around 8:15 this morning. My goal was to get to 100, and if the win came with that, I'd take it, although I would feel a little bad because Lou had such an awesome month. Threw the Charlies Super Dipper almost exclusively - made a few casts with the chatterbait, and flipped a little as well, but to no avail. Started kinda slow, but the bite picked up when it started to rain. Caught a few small ones on the Dipper, then, after catching a decent 2lber, on the next cast, what would have been the winning fish blew it up. I was planted in the big pad field, and the fish was over 30 away. I couldn't troll toward it, and I couldn't move it because it was so entangled. I was finally able to put my rod down and lift the motor to go toward the fish. Right as I got there, I felt that dreaded double pop - you know the one - one pop of the hook coming out, the other as it snags a pad stem. Then it started raining hard. Pressed on, soaked to the bone, but determined to get a cull or two. Moved out of the pad field, throwing to dead hydrilla with open water in between mats. Right as my lure got to an opening about 8' from the boat, a good one loaded on, and I yanked it into the boat. Now, how to take the pic? It was dumping, and everything, including my phone, was soaked. Somehow, I finally managed pics, but they are blurry. The fish was 20.5, and it put me at 99". I needed one more at 20.25 to get me to 100. The bite stayed good for about 30 more minutes, and I caught several more decent fish, including a slab speck, but none that would help. Finally packed it in and loaded the boat. Oh, in addition to the big fish I lost, there were other misses/wakes/blowups that could have also been helpful fish. I was getting a little bummed.
Went to the middle lake in the chain and cast a few off the bank - nothing. Then I tried the North lake for one last shot. On the third cast, once again, far away in heavy pads, a good one sucked down the Spro hb frog. Horsed it to the bank, and I knew it was the one I needed. 20.25, put me at 100" on the nose. Fished hard for over 7 hours, and was able to go home satisfied.
It was a weird month. I didn't fish as much, due to being out of town and dealing with Irma.  Had numerous skunks, but the days they did bite, I caught quite a few fish. Just not as many biguns.
I've never been so happy to get second place (assuming Rick doesn't read this and go back out, lol). In fact, I was almost relieved that the fish didn't measure 20.75 for a buzzer beater. I'm happy for Lou, and it was lots of fun being part of the closest 3 man finish I've seen in the FLBR.
Congrats again to everyone .

It was a heck of a month I'm officially done. I gave it my all. Upon Rick seeing Tress hit 100 he picked up his stuff and went fishing again so we're going to have to wait and see what happens tonight. Lol!!

Thanks Tress and Flats.
Unfortunately heroics did not pay off. Same lake 0 bites. Had one blow up on my line half way from me an the frog and ran with my line. Never seen that happen. Frog went untouched though. Switched to a black vibe whe the sun set and not a bite.

Congrats on the win Lou!

Congrats on the comeback Tress to pass me and jump into second. Well done.

It was a good month. Looks like the fishing is getting back to normal down here. Too bad we have a limited playing field with the glades water being so overly high. But as long as my local playgrounds cooperate like they did towards the end of this month it should be competitive moving forward.

Rick... you had an unbelievable month.  ~c~ You caught the two biggest fish of the month which resulted in 2 HAWG Wall entries!!  That being said, you no longer are a Padawan. You have become a Jedi.  ~c~ Well done!!  :)

Lou this is for your spectacular win, and come back from the difficult months you've had this year catching big fish. Not to mention you've dethroned Tress after over a year of him winning. So until the end of next month you are the champion!

This was an unbelievable month!! We have had close finishes in the past, and this month ranks as one of the top best finishes we have seen here in quite some time. Between first and third place there was only 1.25" difference, and .25" between first and second. That's crazy!! Fortunately once the smoke settled I managed to squeak by for the win. It's been a while that I haven't experienced a win on here, and I will be lying to all of you if I said I wasn't excited for this one. I fished my butt off this month especially with the great start Okeechobee provided me earlier in the month. After that, I had to hustle bank fishing for the close. Knowing I was going head to head against Tress and his 11 month streak, made me fish harder. I knew Tress was not going to back down. Rick's surge over the last couple of days also was a concern, especially after the fish he caught today. You guys made this month very... very... challenging, but extremely fun and competitive.  Thank you!! Looking forward to October and the classic. Thanks again, and good luck to everyone next month... :)
