Title: Rocky Gorge 3/18
Post by: acwatkins on March 18, 2019, 09:30:29 AM
Got out on the gorge for a couple hours yesterday from 11-5. Sun was high and warm, partly cloudy, but quite windy. The water temps were between 45-48 and a little bit stained. I started the day by fishing main lake and secondary points the best I could given the wind. With no success I worked my way into the coves looking for bank transitions, sun beaten areas, and marks on my graph. Nothing. My typical cold water formula just wasn't working. I was fishing my way out of a cove and suddenly my little swimbait just stopped. I set the hook and immediately knew it was a big fish. At first I thought it was a catfish by the lazy but strooong pulls. Then the fish gave a massive head shake, and headed straight to deep water. At that point I considered maybe a striper? After some drag pull I finally get her to the boat and my girlfriend netted her, all 5lbs 13ozs of green gold. It was a tough day, and only for one bite, but worth every second. Good start to the season so far! (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190318/1b998a50e707c73137763ee7889e604e.jpg)

Awesome fish Aaron!  Was planning on getting out there yesterday as well but have been sick as a dog for the last 3 days.  Quality fish!

Very nice. The water temps aren't quite there yet, but if you had a couple warm days, that might be enough to move some of them up close to the flats. March was always a tough month for me on the reservoirs, the up/down temps the cooler water, and the fact they are still in the winter mode. I do miss the place, gonna have to get up that way again this year.

Nice fish AC! Makes it worth fighting that wind all day. I should be able to make it out there Sunday if I don't go to Mattawoman. I live closer to the Gorge so I will most likely end up there.

Thank you all! It felt good to get my hands on a quality fish early. Hell of a fight on a light spinning setup too.
