Title: Prop vent plugs
Post by: Sixpack on May 26, 2020, 02:41:55 PM
I have a FURY4 prop and all the vent holes are open and I want to replace the vent plugs. Can anyone direct me in the right direction to buy some replacement plugs? Thanks in advance...

Just about any shop should have them for sale.  You could also try Mercury direct.

Is the prop blowing out or are you getting too many RPM on holeshot?

@apenland01 I think it is blowing out. The FURY4 has 8 vent holes in it, 2 per blade and all of them are open. I'm having an issue getting it to lay over. I was thinking about plugging them all and starting from there. It's a 14.5 x 26P on a 2005 Evinrude 225 HO/DI pushing a TR-22. On the pad it runs in the 70's depending on the load...

It's easier to put them in than take out. I'd plug one hole behind each blade and test.

That's a very stout pitch on that engine and hull.  I run a 24p Fury 4 and it gives me great holeshot at about 3800 RPM on breakover getting on plane in about 4-5 seconds.  I have all the PVS vents open.  If I were to put any plugs in, I don't think I could spin enough RPM to get on plane.  If you are having trouble getting it to break over, I would think you might be over-pitched on the prop.  If it's blowing out, you would hear it and it would be obvious.

My boat is a 1994 Ranger 492VS, which is a heavy hull with a 2004 Optimax 225.  If I ran a 26p Fury 4, I might never get on plane....

Just noticed you have twin power poles as well.  You are asking a lot of that 225 to spin a 26p Fury 4.  If you have a friend that can loan you a 25p or 24p to try out, you can rule out being over-pitched on your prop.

I agree, a 26p 4 blade is too much prop. 25p maybe.

I love the handling and hole shot a 4 blade give you but you have to drop at least 1" in pitch to compensate for the added blade.

e-tech have way more torque than an opti.

@merc1997, That's what I was thinking. The Evirudes have way more low end torque then the Mercurys but the Mercurys make a lot more top end power. I'm currently running a 24P old school 3 blade Raker...

That may be true, but I can't imagine any 225 on a TR-22 loaded with gear, power poles, 4-5 batteries and who knows what hydraulic pumps also in the back getting on plane easily trying to spin a 26p Fury 4.

We don't know if this is a new prop he's trying to dial in, or a new problem on a prop he's been running for a while.

The cheap experiment is to put some PVS plugs in it and see what happens.  I would suspect it will lag badly, but who knows....

Update: After trying several different props I put a 24 Raker back on it until I find something better...
