I am seriously considering eliminating the VRO system on my old Johnson Fast Strike. I consider this a pre-emptive strike to prevent a sitiuation when the VRO goes bad and takes the motor with it. Currently there are no issues but many are advising the removal of the VRO.
The real problem is that I have no idea how to do this correctly. I have watched the videos but the are not all that good and I still don't feel like I have an exact instruction about how to do this. It does not seem like a big deal but I have no real information to go by. Is this something I can do or do I need to have a technician do it.
Two ways to do it.
One: Eliminate the Oil Tank and Line. Keep the rest of the VRO Pump to use for Gas side only. Pre-Mix Oil in the main Gas Tank.
Two: Remove VRO Pump Assembly Completely. Install a Gas Only Pump, easy to do just do a You Tube search. Pre-Mix Oil in main Gas Tank.
Or 3: Leave it alone. May work for ever or may quit working tomorrow. If the Oil Side quits working then you'll blow the motor running on Gas Only.
Only the 3 Choices ya got.
I've run with VROs most of my life without ever having a problem. Proper maintenance, using recommended good quality oil, and paying attention helps ensure things keep working.
Me Too Jim. I have had no problems with the VRO in 40 years. I think I am just gonna keep what I have and just be aware of potential failures.
I blew two 150 Fast Strike's in three years. The VRO was notorious for not pumping lubricant. By the time the over heating alarm sounded, the engine was gone. The only sure solution was removing the VRO completely and mixing in the gas tank.
