Title: Rod Length - Fishing from Bank vs. Boat
Post by: philm63 on November 26, 2020, 09:08:41 AM
For some reason I've been focusing on 7' as my desired length for a bass rod even though I am aware there are several variations in length, and I suppose it is because I just never looked at the differences each length offers.

So, bank vs. boat - what length for what techniques and why? (I'm limited to bank, for now) Do bank fishers need longer rods for longer casts, or...? Or shorter rods for...?

I primarily use 7ft rods for bank fishing, I may take out one of my 7'3" occasionally if I'm testing something. I mainly use 7 footers for bank fishing because of clearance issues. Clearance from the ground  and from surrounding objects, ie, trees mostly.

I tend to use regular rod lengths from the bank or boat. Granted I would probably go longer if I fished exclusively from the boat.

I use anywhere from a 6'10" jerkbait rod, to an 8' swimbait rod from the bank.

From a boat I like longer rods although I admit that once I get over 7 ft. 6 in it starts to get a little squirrelly for me unless I'm bombing long overhand casts.

From the bank I prefer shorter rods for some techniques like jerkbaits or walking baits, the reason being is that I jerk straight down so longer rods can end up slapping the dirt or rocks or the water etc. Not a good situation for the rod either way.

If I have a technique where I can get away with a longer rod from the bank I will use it.

I use 7 and 7'3" because I'm used to fishing from the bank. From the kayak, I wish I had some shorter rods. The long ones are tricky for me to work with from water surface level, especially when walking top water baits and pitching jigs. I also have some decreased accuracy in casting while sitting in my kayak.
