Title: Custom Micro Bass Boat: SwampCat Boat Works lives!!!
Post by: FD on September 04, 2022, 06:59:10 AM
Yep, my most ambitious project yet began yesterday.

The DIY garage boat, the SC 12-60 Tunnel Micro Bass boat started yesterday.  Here are a few sneak peek pics from day 1.  Video coming soon.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220904/826e4a5edaf1afea2b50bdf3c57e0977.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220904/b3e63bd8ea92fb3e285341d4f6ad533a.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220904/728195148b6df026498924068c7cb718.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220904/7c4ee14c2236e3afa69d35d86104bde9.jpg)

Day 2 went well.  The tunnel is taking shape.  Got the interior side walls in and glued with Thixo epoxy.  The overnight cure is unbelievably solid.

I'm still having issues with making the bow geometry work out.  That's day 3's task.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220905/5b48870999cd5593945f657b25ce0eed.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220905/be55ddf40e7152e12f941f8660b5ff30.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220905/3a39a107ff9738a4a66530986393b4b3.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220905/eef750aa37a7f3a16e4890efa53dc06a.jpg)

Looks Heavy?

Part of what you see is the jig to keep it  square during the build.  The boat is made out of 5mm plywood.

That being said it is going to be heavier than a Jon boat or pond prowler.  But it is larger and has the capabilities of a bass boat, in an 11'-8" frame.  Still should fit in the back of a pickup with the Reese hitch mounted frame/loader I designed.  It is also designed to fit in the back of a toy hauler so I can have a comfortable boat when we hit the road in a few years.

End of day 3.  I got the bow geometry worked out so it looks less like a barge.  Having room for storage under the deck made it look tall for its length.

We will see how it looks when I get it out of the jig and flipped over, but that is still 40 hours away...(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220905/74d3ee345f4357a98e47f6f9ae68c0db.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220905/d3a8522794764fcf5290b4f05fdfc4c0.jpg)

Thanks G.  Honestly the company runs itself most of the time, but I like to think I'm amazing..

Normal power will be all electric. Likely a MK Edge TM and an ePropulsion outboard.

However I have two test dummies, Nate and Josh, that want to put a 25 on it and see if they can get 50 mph out of it.

Progress photos from Day 6.  It's starting to look like a boat..

Videos coming weekly or when I get time to edit.

I got it off the horses and on the ground by myself.  It still weighs well under 100lbs.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220910/e3016cbb597c611656f3a05102756bd9.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220910/f7033003f85ba122bfb6ec93de28e0d7.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220910/73f28bdaadc8a12ad13b193889c46791.jpg)

Yes, sort of, but not until I flip it over.

Because I wanted it to track well under TM power and handle a higher HP outboard at the same time, the pontoons are more pronounced at the stern while the bow end is more flat.   With the changing angle, I have to cut and fit each one individually.

When I finish the skin and flip it, I'm putting 10" of 2lb density, closed cell pour foam in the pontoons.  That should give me 1800 lbs of buoyancy.

If it fills with water I should be able to sit in it and wait for someone to come get me.

Day 7.  I survived.

Probably should not have taken on such a complex hull shape for my first boat build but it's too late now.  Finally got the skins on but it was a pain.  I was attacked by a horde of love bugs and had to close the garage doors and break out the portable AC to keep it tolerable.  It did keep most of the bugs out of the epoxy.

Tomorrow I flip it.

I see a small problem with that, the amount of tackle the average baas fisherperson carries weighs much mow than that. lo lo It's coming along quite nicely Lee.

I flipped it by myself with no issue.  Picked it up and set it on the milk crates.  Still around 100 lbs

Did a lot of cleanup, put in part of the epoxy fillets, and filled all the screw holes from the temp bracing. Cut and fit the TM deck support plate out of 3/4 ply.

Lots of sealing and sanding to be done.

It's looks like an egg crate at the moment, but I started the layout of the rod lockers and deck cutouts.  Hopefully the sleek design that was in my head starts to show itself soon, or not...

It's going on it maiden voyage in the canal soon for a leak test and to check the balance before I install the floatation foam.

Full disclosure,  it floated great but wasn't entirely watertight...  a few leaks from seams and screw holes that weren't properly sealed.  But, since the bottom is made of 21 individual pieces of 5mm plywood to get this tunnel shape, I was pretty happy.

We dried it out and corrected those leaks.  One more waterproof test, then 4 oz glass on the bottom seams with a Gator Glide bottom coat.  After that we will put the pour foam floatation in.

It's coming along nicely.  Video 2 is out and I'm working on editing to get the vids caught up to the build progress.

Thanks guys.

It's a 2 part epoxy Primer for below the waterline that is flexible.  Total Boat Total Protect is the product name.

I'm putting GatorGlide on the bottom today.  That will finish the bottom and I flip it for the last time.
