So I've had some issues with my 2005 merc XR6 that I mentioned in an earlier thread. I thought it would be impossible to get a local shop to take it in without a long wait due to the fact that we're in their "busy season" but I asked and I was told to bring it in tomorrow and they would get to it within a week to a week and a half. I also put down a fully refundable deposit on a '23 Merc 150 XL. This was the only 150 hp motor they had in stock and that was only because a guy ordered it and had to back out of the deal and I was told it takes 18 weeks to get another from time of order.
Now, I have options. When my old(18 years) motor problems are fully diagnosed they will tell me the cost for the needed repairs and if the cost is prohibitive I'll just have them install the new motor.
I'm told that they have no use for the old motor so I will have to put it in my truck and take it home (or somewhere).
Some of you must have repowered your boats. What the hell am I gonna do with a 500# paper weight? :-\
I really don't know, but I would think if you end up getting a new motor, surely there must be another shop that would give you something for the old one. Even if the power head is shot, surely someone would want the lower unit I'd believe.
Since you know the block and lower unit are good and the reeds are fresh, you'll be able to part it out or sell it whole to someone that needs a cheep motor because the are in a bind. Just be honest with them. Anything you get puts you ahead.
If the old motor is back in working order some boat dealers will sell IT on consignment. I have the same situation with an Evinrude motor. The Evinrude dealer selling me a new motor (Suzuki) will sell my Evinrude on consignment.
It's unfortunate that the dealer doesn't want it. When I repowered, I swapped the old motor (blown) for the cost of of materials and rigging. My dealer rebuilt it and had it for sale the following Spring. As Mike pointed out, the lower unit, block and everything else is worth $$. You shouldn't have any trouble parting it out or selling it.

I just replaced my Evinrude motor with a Suzuki. The Evinrude dealer sold and installed the Suzuki. He volunteered to sell my Evinrude for me on consignment. When I told him what I thought it might sell for he said no, he'd try for three thousand more. I asked how much he'd get, and he said nothing. I'd get the full sale price. He did add that he won't lose out as he'll charge the buyer for installation of the Evinrude. Sounded good to me. Now all he has to do is sell it.

Yup, my Evinrude dealer sells lots of used rudes and when they go out of there, they are 100%.
