Title: Rod for Large Jerkbaits 3/4oz to 7/8oz (What is Gary Dobyns using?)
Post by: bernerbass99 on August 17, 2023, 06:00:59 PM
I have the Champion XP 704CB but I'm thinking this rod might be a little light for larger 3/4-7/8oz jerk baits. Does anyone know what Gary Dobyns is using for larger jerk baits ? What is everyone else using? Thank you.

My guess is the XP 705CB.

I have the Boom Boom 705 CB which is essentially the same as the Champ 705 CB.

3/4 and 7/16 Oz. is right in this rod's wheelhouse. I throw big Spooks jerkbaits and cranks on it without any issues.

The 704 CB is my all-time favorite jerkbait rod for most of the baits I throw. Both posters that mentioned the 705CB are right and it works very well. Personally, I don't use this rod myself. I like the DC 706 CB for those larger baits. The 706 CB is not a great seller for us as the 705 CB works for a far wider range of baits so it's the top seller. I just like a bit more rod to move the bait more on these bigger baits. If I had to guess I'd say 80% of guys will use the 705 CB and 20% will use the 706CB. I like the 706 much better myself. If you want a dedicated bigger jerkbait rod I'd go 706 CB. If you want a do it all rod, the 705Cb is the best choice. Do I have you confused yet :) :)  Thanks for the question.

Gotta love it when Gary responds with a great answer to a direct question!
