Title: I fish thru the winter, but not as often - so I started jogging.
Post by: Hobious on December 03, 2023, 08:55:52 AM
I don't know what happened to me, but I am now a morning person.  I wake up typically at 4:00am.  getting up early to fish is fairly easy for me.  I just roll out of bed and go..(after doing my morning ablutions)

now that I don't fish as often due to inclement weather, I just wake up and lay there with headphones and my iPad waiting to get up to go to work, or for my wife to wake up.

I decided, I better make better use of my time.  my dog and I are jogging!!  two easy miles for now, but I hope to get it up to 4 -5 miles before breakfast, shower and the commute to work.  work has been hell, and I think I can use the stress relief.

nice jogging in the dark before the world wakes up.  my dog is finally at the point he isn't trying to kill me with a fast pace.  slow down sucker!!  love that dog.

any runners?  it isn't easy as I age.

Heck no. Mountain bike. CRAZY good and way easier on these older body parts.

I'm not a runner, but I'm a walker. I walk 6 days a week for 2.5-4 miles a session. The weekends are my longer walking days.
I'm at the stage where I'm considering to include a few running intervals during my walking sessions.
But I want to shed a little bit more weight to minimize the pounding on my joints.

I was the kind of person that hated running, but I decided at one point to lose weight and started walking. That turned into jogging short distances, and then into running multiple miles regularly. I even did some 5ks and stuff, mostly for charity, but actually placed sometimes.

My routine was to get up at 0400 and run four miles before getting ready for work. I did that every other day, and lifted weights on the days I didn't run.

On weekends when I didn't have to get ready for work and had more time, I'd do 8 to 10 mile runs. Now my knee starts screaming at me if I run more than a mile. I've tried to ease back into it, but my knee has not agreed so far. I have noticed I can run with a lot less pain if I run barefoot on my wife's treadmill, but I hate running indoors. I miss my morning runs outside.

I have to work back into Mountain biking.  my heartrate gets to explosive levels on steep climbs.   I like going to a nearby mountain park, but I typically drive there since the road back is a death wish.  so, I do like just going out the side door and jogging.

I once called my doctor on a mountain climb and I told her my heart rate was __..she said that is fine and it will go down the more I do it.  mountain bike equals steep granny gear climbing for me.  I can't help myself.

one climb has a great bank fishing bass lake up there.  hahah..

Enjoy it. I definitely felt better throughout the day when I started off with a morning run. If you stay at it, you'll get to a point where you can pretty much run all day at a particular pace. Then the challenge goes from "how far" to "how far at a faster pace," and keeps going from there.

I run a few days a week. I have for years. I really don't look forward to it or enjoy it all that much but it's a good way to keep in shape.

You should sprint instead, check out Dr. Sean Omara on Youtube.  Even though I have bad knees, I have started mild sprints in the past few weeks and it is much better than jogging.  Once you start running, the stress is on your calves, not banging your knees...

I'll check that out. Thanks for posting that 👍

wow.  my legs are friggen sore!!  this morning, even my dog was looking back at me to hurry up.  i was slower, but i got the distance in.

my knee hurts a bit, but that is from my muscle pulling it sideways.  hahah..i pulled out my wife's foam roller and did some stretches and it was awesome.  no pain.  i'll stretch again after work.  that roller is effective!!

I ride a bunch of short, but steep (10-12%  & more) hills on gravel roads, with a few longer 6-7A% grades that are just about as bad. Waiting for my first crash. I do the "peaks and valleys" thing, and my pulse will run in the high teens to low 120's, then my peaks on the hills are 145 to 162 bpm. That 162 used to scare me. Heck, 152 used to scare me. No real pain other than typical muscle soreness, and after 16 months at this my quads don't burn like they did.

This has been my savior- with my trashed ankle I just can't walk far. But the bike? Over thirty pounds gone since I started, and my breathing is crazy better.

Still waiting for that first wreck tho'.

You should check out the napa half marathon. I used to do that every year and the Army 10 miler. Its a beautiful course and they do a shorter route if you need. I always loved running but have given it up to my back injury. I lift weights almost every day and superset in stretches for my hip flexors, hamstrings, glutes, etc in between sets. I usually walk on the back end of it. When I was still running before deployment, most of my running had transitioned to indoors. I have a proform iFit treadmill that is alot of fun, running different series with trainers around the world. I will probly do some incline walking for cardio when I get back home now that Ive hung up running to preserve my low back issues. I showed up here being able to bench 225 for 2. Now Im at 225 for 7 and still have 4 months left. Getting strong (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20231205/6d6e7a18186f51d01318b1553ad6eeee.png)

@Dark3 LEGIT!!

baby steps for me.  if I lay too much on myself, I tend to quit.  sad but true.  I know myself

This morning was better.  less sore and my dog is realizing what I am trying to do.  he paces me now.  probably time to up it half a mile in distance. :(

i almost did a half marathon once.  I actually did one but not recorded.  Trained for one for months, did the last long run and started getting clots in my legs again which was the end of my AF career.

running is definitely a way to lose yourself, especially once you get in that zone and you forget about the world.  For me that usually started to happen about 3 miles but i hated it until then  lo

great work by all you all.

couple years back i was up to 7 miles/day (walking) and my hip started SCREAMING at me...  docs said 'replacement' but I'm not ready.  so i fired my cable subscription.  joined a gym and started swimming every day.  along with that I added abdominal work and spent a bit of time on strengthening my hamstrings (very important for stable knees and solving pain).

as time went on, I added stationary bike.  roads are just too dang dangerous with drivers of all stripes.

good progress so far.  only 50-60 pounds to my goal weight.  will see if I can get there before medicare kicks in.
