Title: Old Town Sportsman Kayak
Post by: FlatsNBay on February 11, 2024, 04:20:41 PM
I'll be getting an Old Town Sportsman 106 PDL Kayak. It's 10.5 feet, has a pedal drive, and is 36" wide allowing for a stable platform for stand-up fishing. Some of the extras that I will be getting are:

Garmin Striker 7" depthfinder-I'll be utilizing the quick draw mapping so that I can create on the water topographic maps of the out of the way lakes, ponds, and rockpits.

Kayak Cushion for comfortable seating.

Seat Risers to create comfortable all-day fishing.

Black Pack fishing box with 6 rod holders.

Yak Attack safety flag/light pole.

and a lot of smaller miscellaneous items

Can't wait!

I don't know the first thing about these kayaks, but they look fun. And the pedal-drive ones look like they would be good exercise, too. I probably need some of that.  lo

I've looked at the pedal drive several times, but after seeing the videos of the power drive, I'd have to have that, screw the exercise.

Congrats Kayak fishing looks like a lot of fun. Eye level with gators though would pucker me up and I would absolutely lose it if a cotton mouth started at me. Lol

Old Towns are made in Maine.

That kayak cushion is expensive no?  I got a cheap stadium cushion from Dicks Sporting Goods for like $8, on sale.  It's excellent.  I secured it with some zip ties.

You're right Hobius, those cushions can be pricey. I'll explore my options. Thanks for your advice.

you should look into the Donkey LEash i suggested in your other thread.  total game changer.

and i kinda feel it is better for the bass.

Kayaks were ordered! Also spent a ton on some accessories for it. Next will be a Garmin Echomap depthfinder.

Kayaks came in! I ordered 2, one in a steel blue camo which my wife likes and one in an orange camo which will be my primary fishing kayak because the orange will help my visibility for other boaters so that I don't  get run over. The majority of the waters I intend to fish are small and I probably won't see anyone else but just in case I fish a bigger lake. Here are some pics before I add accessories.

Wow, those look really nice Steve! Back when I was thinking about getting a yak the pedal drive was what I wanted.

Curious to know if the pedal drive can get choked up with weeds and what not.

Yes the pedal drive does not like weeds. Just tip up the drive and use a conventional paddle to get through weeds or very shallow water.

Have to agree with you.

A bad day of fishing is better than a good day at work.
