Title: Tinkering with old Chug Bugs
Post by: Capt. BassinLou on April 13, 2024, 08:51:13 AM
I recently circled back to throwing chug bugs again. Don't know why I stopped throwing them.

This time around, however, I have modified a few of my older chug bugs with in-line hooks and bigger split rings.

I discussed the advantages of in-line hooks last year on a thread I posted.

I have had fantastic results with the modifications, and I'm looking forward to fishing with these lures more often.

Thanks for reading!

Looks like you need to learn how to paint baits. They've worn all the paint off! 😂 Great lures!

I think that's why the bass love them so much! That worn look drives them nuts! Lol!!

I have over a dozen older very well made Chug Bugs. I have tossed over a dozen different top water poppers but always always end up back throwing my beloved Chug Bug.

Thing just flat out catches bass and using a 7'6" MHM casting rod and 30lb braid I can easily cast a Chug Bug 50-55 yards. Caught LG/SM bass pike rock bass even channel catfish on a chug Bug. For me nothing is easier to 'walk the dog" than a Chug Bug.
Sadden me to see they are now being so cheaply made.
Caught and released my PB bass a 8lb-11oz LM/bass at night on a Chug Bug from shore no less.

Love my Chug Bugs, and any lure that needs paint is a GOOD one.

I may do my "single-hook" experiments with one for my YT stuff, 'cuz Lou says to...

Lou, tks for sharing the article with us.  Yep those Chug Bugs are a great top water bait.  I have a few of them and haven't used them in a while.   When I top water fish now I'm into using the Whopper Popper.

Before the Whopper Popper came out I the Chug Bug as my go to Top Water Bait.
