Title: water in the boat
Post by: Bane on October 24, 2006, 09:16:01 AM
Since my 882 dont have the pumpout, im wondering (not home to look) if other peoples have a drain valve you have to open/close to water doesnt come in/out if you dont want it to for the livewell.

Took the boat out on sunday with Tony, poor his donuts an stuff in the livewell and later in the day he went to get them...and all his stuff was floating lo

When we got up on the trailer and took the plug out...ALOT of water came out also, dont know why but with the plug in water shouldnt of came in there unless it has something to do with the drain valve also. Any input would be great thanks.

Bane on my 1st Nitro right under the throttle was a manual valve switch.  Fill/Closed/Recirculate something like that anyway it was a 3 position lever.  I never had any issued if I kept it closed.

yeh It was set at "empty" straight up, But I was playing with it so thats where most of it came from I guess then now that I think about it.

Would I have to manually close the valve in the battery compartment to keep water from comming into the livewell if I dont want it to? I know water came out of the boat for a good 2-3 minutes atleast lo

No you should have to do that I never did, one must be closed because when you are done filling it you have to close it or when you run around the lake it would just come out.

okie doke, guess Ill go home and check and make sure its closed before I put it back in the water. The livewells have a plug also correct? I know there is a plug in a cupholder but I thought it was for the main plug but it still had the plug so I didnt think to check the livewell.

I figured it out.  Turn the valve to fill, this closes it and then just don't fill it.

Bane.... You'll still have water in there.... The livewells are NOT storage compartments. The water can still come up through the overflow tube.... I tried to turn the front livewell in my old Ranger into a dry storage locker and not matter what I did(short of pluggin' all the plumbing) water would get in. You'll also need to probably take those valves apart and clean out the gunk in them so that water will not come in when you have the circuit closed.....If you're pulling the plug and the bilge is full of water then there's a good chance that either the livewell fixtures are leaking or it may be the valves or hoses leading to the livewells. Welcome to the unrelenting boat maintenance plan.... Even new boat owners have problems with their New rigs!.... ;)

I don't personally have a nitro, well even a boat, but I thought that the donuts go in coffee or milk, not a livewell.  lo  JK Hope you get it resolved.

Also Bane, the water in the bilge area is quite common and it's fairly normal to have a little come out when you remove the plug.

Most times, it comes into the boat when you come off plane and the following wake slops over the transom.  If you're getting more in the boat than you think you should from this, then it's time to check the livewell plumbing connections.  It's possible that you have a cracked line or fitting.

I would but theres no way to check them...Cant even see them so I dont know where they are routed :(

as for water comming over the transom, that happened once. After that when  Iwas comming down off plane id just gas it a lil bit to keep the water from comming over. First time just about soaked the whole back deck lo

Bane is this your 1st boat?

I ask because there are some things that you will figure out over time and or by asking questions here.  Not trying to make you feel bad, but it will help to know your experience when trying to describe something.

For your live well plumming, pull out the storage box on the left and or right side of your live wells.  On the back deck those dry storage ares have a built in removable grey container.  When you pull those out you will see some of the pluming connections.

Now some of the nitros have a black plastic shield over them that is held in place with a few screws and some don't.  On my 640 I didn't have it but on my 929 they closed it off to give it a move finished look if I were to remove the storage boxes.

As far as all that water coming out the back of your boat, you will have the Plug that you talked about but there with be one or two other inlets in the very same area.  If you have your live wells open and it sounds like you did with the donuts floating and all, when you pulled the boat out of the water those inlets will now become drains for the live well.  So when you pulled the plug all that water running out may have made it look like you had excessive water in the bilge area.

its "my" 3rd, a basstracker and a triton tr176 were before it. The triton had a pumpout so it didnt have a selector for the valve. and I figured "empty" would close the livewell, not that it would empty it, ah well. Live and learn but figured if ask.

Didnt even think to pull the plastic boxes out last night. Was getting dark and just got done spraying the motor down a 2nd time to make sure I got all the freakin oil that was puked out on it off.

I think like we talked about yesterday that before you launch turn it to closed and it should stay mostly dry.  Bill is right and some may still come in from the over flow.

Where did all the oil come from?

that was a different topic but...

my dad overtightened the engine oil cap and cracked it and noone knew. so after running up the potomac and began fishing we spotted oil trailing us, so kept the motor down so it didnt come out anymore from there then had to make the trip back in rougher water and the cap eventually broke in half and puked out most of the oil. By the time we got it back loaded up on the trailer, just about all the oil out of the main tank was gone. theres maybe 1/2" or so of oil in it and the one on the motor is still 3/4 the way full so I have a new cap comming ups today via the dealer I got it from for free. But after work I have to go out and get some more oil. Any idea how much they hold? Im guessing between 3-5 gallons. Just lucky I didnt run out of oil with it being a 2 stroke or we would of been trolling the way back  :help:

Yep depending on the tank but normally 3 gal.  You should check with your dealer and see if they sell oil in bulk.  Down here I take my old oil jugs to Travis and get OptiMax oil for like $18.00 a gal rather then paying the $32.00 self price!

the dealer is 6hrs away and bass pro is 2minutes away lol. I am just going to run the merc quicksilver in it, we never had a problem with it in our 115 on the triton we had. and its 22/gal

Does your BassPro sell Nitros or have a service department?

Some of them will sell oil in bulk as well I know Mike Noble used to get his at our BPS.

When I had my 640 quicksilver is all I used but didn't know about the bulk oil option yet.  ~roflmao

Got it.  I wish you the best with your new toy.

Take some action shot while on the water and post them when you get a chance!

well looks like I might have to knock off early to go get the freakin cap. called the dealership after my ups shipment at work came in, they said they are waiting for them to get it in then they will ship to me. So I will be calling the bass pro to see if they have it. Buy theres then when the other comes in, stick it in the bass pro box and return it to bass pro lo
