has anyone ever caught any wiper bass before? I haven't just largemouth for me. What are some good ways to fish for wiper's? Are they usually in deeper water? What baits are best? When is the best time to catch them? I heard that these bass are extremely aggressive and I would love to catch one but I don't know enough about them. Any tips, help, or suggestions would be great. Thanks.

I'm interested in learning more about wipers as well. My "home lake" has a few in it. One that was caught last year was within ounces of the Ohio record.
In late July i hooked what i suspect was a big wiper on a pop-r type bait. It was in the evening shortly after a thunderstorm passed through. I was fishing that surface bait along the riprap dam and something exploded on it. It scared the hell out of me, but i managed to get it hooked. It ran for about ten seconds, ripping braided line off my reel. I finally decided i needed to slow this thing down and i made the mistake of putting my thumb on the reel. As soon as i did, it broke.
That was my favorite topwater bait, too. :mad: lo I would like to learn how to catch them though. That one that was pushing the state record last year was in the 18 lb class.

i had never heard of a wiper either....it looks like a fat striper to me....but that is one lucky guy to be able to catch a state record that many times i wish i could do that
The only fish I've heard called a wiper is a white bass-aka sand bass.
If you have a boat and find a school of them chashing shad on the surface throw a white paddletail jig or a silver spoon through the school. When you do that it is not called fishing anymore-it is called catching. As on every cast.

I caught my first wiper 2 nights ago in a small lake near me in PA. He bit hard on a jointed 2 1/4" minnow by Rapala. Good fighting fish. He was only about 8" but he fought like a LM twice his size.

If that's a hybrid I don't think it's the world record...Arkansas state record is 27lb 5oz.
East Fork lake by me coonhound is full of them wipers, Plus the Ohio river below the dams and around the power plants in the winter.
These can be caught many ways. Like giant Florida bass they love live shiners and/or shad. So any of your cranks, spinnners/inline spinners, or jigging spoons/curly tail jigs will work. I have even caught them cat fishing style with chicken liver on the bottom. They are a schooling fish, run the creeks in the spring to spawn but don't reproduce, usually stocked annually by the State fisheries.
Lines on the side are broken, where Stripers(rock fish) are solid.
shorter and stalkier thean the rock fish.
Up north of the Ohio river we call them a cross of the White bass and the striped bass, as Shawn said from Texas, Hybrid Striper/wiper is one in the same.
Alright to eat but to me not walleye, crappies or yellow ring perch.
When you fillet them out, fillet out the red meat. It turns nasty to me when cooked. Wipers are a strong tasting fish but the fight is awesome!!!!
East Lynn Lake in W.V. is full of hybrid stripers. I accidentally caught some a few years back on chicken liver. Maybe it is just me, but I cant bring myself to bass fish with chicken livers :roll2:

Brookville Lake has them also and are a blast to catch. Caught them mostly when schooling top of the water. Caught them fishing little george, ratltrap, topwater lures, and just plain gold hook with a weight up the line for casting distance. Will hit the hook with nothing on it if they are chasing shad on top of water.

I have caught a few hybrids and stripers here lately. They are fun and put up a good fight. The best way without using live bait that I have found is using a golden spoon. You just run it medium paced and give it some pulls and pops, to make it look like a shiner. In a storm you should run the spoon on top of the water when you see a lot of stripers/hybrids jumping.
