Title: What is this on my Johnson Outboard?
Post by: CouchTater on October 17, 2005, 04:42:48 PM
Alright guys and gals, I had a question.  While I was out checking the batterys on my boat this eve.  I noticed this "switch" on my motor...

(https://www.ultimatebass.com/bass-fishing-forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv311%2FCouchTater%2F10-17-05008.jpg&hash=02c135a2b378751ec049f8d18814f12dbb739c9c)

Is it some sort of trim switch or a kill switch?  It moves down if you push down on it then it has a spring that returns it.  Any help would be appreciated..

Tator that looks like your trim position switch, you should be able to put the motor all the way down and then move the switch with your hand and watch your trim gauge on the dash move  ;)

I don't have a trim gauge, but I am guessing that if I get one, that would be the sending unit?

But, I want a trim gauge, and a tach.   Plus I need a new prop...   ::)

I was thinking it might be the parking lever for holding the motor up for trailering. Another possibility might be a safety neutral switch on some Johnson models. The trim switch out to be operating an electric motor operated hydrolic pump, right? You ought to hear the motor and see the motor rise or fall if it's the trim switch.

That's a newer motor than my junk but looks like the trim sending unit to me.  Just has a different arm than my old stuff.

Well, I guess I need to trace the wires down and see where they go...  The dash on my boat is  ~tumble.  The only thing it has is a fuel gauge...  I PLAN on adding a Tach, Trim Gauge...  Thought about gettin' a Speedodometer but I know how fast it goes LOL.   On top of that, Im needin a new prop bad...  Id  put a pic of it on here, but it is too bad to show in public.  :D

If it's the trim sending unti, it will just be a back and white wire going to a connector, probably with nothing plugged into it.   You will probably need the cable that goes from that connector to the console to connect a guage.
