Anyone have any expierence with this motor? If so likes or dislikes? Gas mileage? Dependability? and so on. Give me some info.
I think we have a couple of guys in our club with that motor...hopefully they will see this and respond.

The Merc. XR6 is one of the most reliable outboard engines ever built. They first built the carbed 150 Mercury engine over 30 years ago and it has proved to be a very solid engine. I have never tried to compare gas milage with other similiar engines, but as I am sure you already know they like gas. All in all a very reliable , powerful engine.

I guess what the salesman told me was true. He stated that the 150 XR6 is the most reliable engine Mercury has ever built. Let me know what everyone thinks just so Ill know what to expect because that is what I have on my new Triton.
Have the same engine on my 04' TR186. Runs great but sometimes easy to flood and stuborn to crank. Had a guy up at Eufaula stop to help me when it flooded on me once. Said to tilt the motor all the way up for about five minutes then lower back down and try to crank. Worked like a charm.
I have the same motor on my Pro Craft. BMiles is correct, it can be stubborn to crank. You must make sure your motor is all the way down when you try to crank it. Out side of that, it is a great motor. Lots of power and very fast. I love it. It does like the gas but I do not know how it does compared to others the same size.

I have had mine for 3 years now. I had the wiring harness to the voltage regulator catch on fire this year. It was strapped to the block with a metal strap with wore thru the insulation. Mercury stepped up to the plate & made me a very loyal customer. That is the only problem I have had with the engine. Mine starts with no problem. Cold start, with the motor trimmed down I push the choke a couple of times then hold it in & start it. It starts on the 1st or 2nd try. After I have been running it that day all I do is trim the motor down & start it. I do not choke it. That works for me. As far as gas, I always put in near the area I plan to fish so a tank of gas in my Ranger 185vs last me 4 to 6 weeks fishing 4 to 5 days a week. I do wear out trolling motors & batteries though.
Everything sounds fine by me. Keep the info coming. Mine was brand new until Saturday when I put it in the water for the first time. It was fairley cold so I choked it twice, gave it some choke while I cranked and it fired right up after two turns. The rest of the day never hit the choke. Keep info coming if anybody knows anything else.
If you have real cold mornings, hold the choke in while you are cranking it.
