Post fishing reports for Candlewood here.....
STILL FROOZZZZEEENNNNN BRRRBBRBRRRR
When does it usually ice out? Got to be getting soon :-\
Mike usually a lot of lakes are ice out by now. This rate maybe April. Candlewood should be open before ice any lakes around my way.
Well I wonder what they are going to call the weather phenomena this year :roll2: The winter in the south was very mild and short but the one up north seems to be going long. :'(
Mike in my area they have said that its the 4th most snowiest winter in the history. We have also been way below the normal temps for this time of year.
That figures, I have met all these great folks from up north and I can't wait to see them start fishing but NOOOO it has to keep snowing lo Just my luck. Look a me complaining because you can't go fishing, am I horible or what :roll2:
~rainAhhh The sound of that sweet sweet rain. The rain is as we write, melting away our frozen nightmare.
The ice report is that the Squzntz causeway is now melted. The bass are still deep but on a slow presentation are your to catch.
Lake Candlewood is now clear of all ice, though closed until the 16 of April.
Tournaments Start on the 16 and continue on through out the season.
Spawning is just about starting, and sight fishing is a possiblity in some areas. ding-dong winters gone!!
Well, I came over to the good ol' US of A and fished the tournament last weekend. Great fun. Fridays pre-fishing was best for me with both a smallie and a largemouth of over 5lb on spinnerbaits and another 4 fish averaging 2lb on spinnerbaits and tubes. Saturday and Sundays fishing days were poor at my end of the boat, but most of the guys fishing the tournament had a few fish with over half putting in limit bags with "lunker" of about 4lb. Again the pattern seemed to be spinnerbaits and tubes, though 2 of my fish came on wacky rigged chartreuse senkos. Sunday, despite being a more promising looking day was much harder fishing all round. I only had 1 largemouth (plus a record shaking rock basss!) on a worm, but my partner fishing at the front of the boat had a limit on rattletraps and then later bungee worms. Most boats struggled with typically the front of the boat getting 3-6 fish and the back getting 0-3 fish.
Outstandingly good fun, well worth the trip over. Particularly entertaining, for an Englishman used to 12ft boats with 4hp engines, was my partners new Avalanche with the 150 XR6 engine. That bad boy did 59.5mph when nobody was looking ;)
Tim, thanks for sharing your report with us. Sounds about par for course, do well in prefish and then the tournament they don't cooperate :'( Sounds like you had a good time and that is what it's all about :-* ~c~
As most of you know I planned on fishing with BASSMANNNN on my trip up here to CT and we got out twice on Candlewood. Absolutely beautiful Lake!!
The first day we were on the water for 7 hours and didn't catch much. I caught a largemouth on a Creme Swim bait (same thing I use in FL.) and BASSMANNNNN caught a 3 lb. smallie (and a few other fish). Overall is what a foggy, cool, breezy day. Not the best for fishing, but I had a great time with BASSMANNNNN.
Saturday a.m. I met up w/ my brother and were preparing to fish Candlewood from shore and guess who strolls in off the Lake - - - - BASSMANNNNN ~c~
He took me and my bro out for a few hours and I caught a largemouth and 2 smallies and boy were they small. I caught the LM on a micro munch senko, wacky rigged in road kill color.
The 2 smallies came on a Blue Fox in-line spinner #3.
Overall the fishing was fair but the time fishing was awesome and I'll promise you BASSMANNN knows his stuff. If you're ever up in the southeastern part of CT look him up - he'll take good care of you!!!
That's awesome, Thanks Bassmannnn for hooking Fish For Free up. It's great to see folks from the forum meet up and get some fishing in ~c~
Bassmannnn thanks for taking care of fishforfree ~c~ ~c~ and glad ya'll caught some fish too ;) Mike as you know that's what it's all about just like a big family around here ~c~ ~c~
I am seeing this post over a year later after FFF was here!
Thanks for the kind words.
Today is 4-16-06..
Season began yesterday and already Anglers are catching lots of smallmouth on the points getting ready to come up.
Alot of big limits will come this next month, It will be great.
Anybody planning on a trip to Candlewood, let me know. I will try to put you onto some good areas.
BASSMANNNNN, It's tme to play all over the state. Fishing should be good for the next few months everywhere. I've never fished Candlewood, but will this year for sure.
Heyjusbassin, Ley me know if you want to get together on Candlewood. There is alot of honey holes, we can fish together if you want.
I want to try and get down there again this year. I ahve only fished it once but boy I really enjoyed that lake.
Need to turn this into a mini rally.
Great thread. I look forward to sharing reports from Candlewood next season. Awesome fishery!!!
Hey fellas if you turn this into a mini rally and some none boaters are needed, let me know
With the mild winter we're having up here in CT, there is still plenty of open water. There was a tournament on Candlewood on Dec 30th. The winning bag was 17.35lbs. of, second was 15.72lbs, and third was 15.41lbs. Not too shabby for late December. If the weather remains as it has they're planning another for Jan 13th.
i have only been to candlewood twice, once to ride around and once to fish.only caught two lmbass, its a big place need to spend more time poking around
i just fished a tournament there this weekend. We didn't do so hot, but it was the first time fishing there. The water temp was 60-63, saying they should be ready to spawn, but don't tell the fish that. The boats that placed well caught 4 lb smallies on roadbeds in 10-15 feet of water. We caught our limit both days, and I caught two 4 lb largemouth the second day, but not even close to enough. I think the winners had 39 or 40 lbs.
Nate,
Anything special as far as lures go..............?
crankbaits out on the roadbeds BIIGGG crankbaits, deep divers, the fish seemed like they would be moving in soon tho!!! smallies were deep, largemouth seem to be moving in earlier, we caught the smaller ones throughout the tournament shallow , the water temp increased throughout the tournament and on the last day we caught out better fish, including the two 4 lb largemouth, caught all of these fish near rocks and boat docks on tubes and small excaliber jerkbaits in minnow patterns
Thanks Nate,
I'll be heading up there in a few weeks. Years past I fished Senkos pretty regularly and caught some nice largemouths. It seems like every year it changes a little but every now and then they look for something different. Never really fished a lot of tubes there.
Anyone of you regulars got any advice for me for my upcoming May 4th-5th? tourney. I know it's a while in advance, but it's so cold and I need something to do. We're going up for two days before and gonna try to figure something out. We plan on targeting smallmouths spawning out deeper in about 10 feet. Oh well, I'm off to look for reports, I hope somebody replies with a little advice for a fellow UBer.
locate old road beds and throw tubes.worked and works for me. :)
what depth are you talking? like 10-12 ft? and thanks, I'll check out my maps.
Candy is a monster....Good sized grubs work for smallies also......Good luck
Good luck with the up coming tourney. ;D
Fished an open tourney May 4th+5th
We practiced Friday and caught fish on tubes, crankbaits, and 1 on a spinnerbait. The spinnerbait fish went over 4.5. It was rain, cold, and windy, with temps a little over 50 degrees.
Well the first day we got 16.88 lbs with 8 fish including two 4's and a 3 filling the rest of the limit with fish up to 2 pounds. We caught these on wacky rigged dingers and tubes anywhere from 1-8 feet. Once again cold rainy and windy with temps in the low 50's.
The second day we pulled up to our primary spot and got skunked. The wind had changed directions, and the rain had subsided. We didn't have anything until 11 o'clock when we caught a 1.5 lber. Got another dinker (1-1.5) around 1:30. 3 o'clock and we still have the two dinks when we pull up to new water. I got a 3.5 smallie on a tube in 30 ft. We continue fishing down the bank and run into some bluff blanks( I'm talking 30 ft 5-10 ft from the bank). I get a 3- 3.5 lb largemouth that was a football being only about 16 inches long. Well that's all we got for the day putting us around 10 lbs.
We didn't weigh the fish because we knew we would need around 22 lbs to get a check. The leaders had 26 lbs after the first day and pulled right in front of us to catch two 3+ lb fish which could have really helped us out. We don't know what the finals were but the weights seemed to be dropping 1-2 lbs per boat from what we saw of weigh ins. Overall a great lake and one we look forward to unlocking the secrets to in the future.
C'mon guys! Everyone too busy fishin? Large and smallmouth wrapping up the spawn, waterskiers startin to be everwhere. I get sick of pleasureboaters and dockowners. Think i'll go to lilly next week.
Went out 3 times this week the smallies are slammin on the danbury end of the lake
