Post by: nlareau on December 28, 2005, 07:42:44 PM
Thanks to gsoc for knowing about this link.  Just run the test and find out how fast your internet connection is.

http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/ (http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/)

By the way, I was 210kbs download and 205kbs upload.

Geez, you guys are cooking with gas!  Anything with a 4Mb/sec download speed is flying.  You must have good cable modems.

Cable is supposed to be 4MB/sec or so, but it is like a "party line". The more folks using it in your neighborhood the slower it will get (or more correctly the less of that 4MB there is to share).

I'm on a low-end DSL "lite" service.  200k is sooo much faster than dialup.

Finally, it is the download speed that makes the difference.  Your upload speed can be pretty slow because the short messages you type don't take much time anyway.
Title: Re: Test your internet speed
Post by: Sharon on December 28, 2005, 08:03:19 PM
I notice if you try it at different areas, you get different speed results..
Could that be because of the distance? I tried Ga which is closer and got a faster speed.
and Wa state which is furthest from me and got a slower speed.
Ga = 1490 KBPS download
         348 Upload
Wa= 1487 KBPS download
         319 KBPS upload

I take it distance has something to do with it?
Title: Re: Test your internet speed
Post by: nlareau on December 28, 2005, 08:07:18 PM
Yeah, I can imagine that distance would make the test run a little slower.

Hey was that a poke at me for typing short messages  ::)

To me the upload speed is the most important because most of the day I am adding files to one site or another around here and if it were not a fast connection I would be here twice as long and I just don't think that is possible  ~shade

As a webmaster, you are not the average profile of an internet user.  Most folks are like me who type in "http://www.ultimatebass.com", which is a real short string to send even at 56kbps, and then get a big download from the site.  That's why most links are setup (optimized) to download better than upload.

Post by: MotherNature on December 28, 2005, 08:25:42 PM
I know we have looked at some of the graphics on the site and how large they are because I think that most of our users are using dial up and I have been looking for a template that is "lite" so that it wouln't take so much for the folks to download it each time they visit.

I think I have found one but it will probably be a while before I am able to put it into action due to my committments at the moment.

It sure would be good if we could stream line the site so that it was a bit faster for those that are using dial up  ~c~

The other part of the upload thing is most uploads are compressed to the max, and that speeds up alot, as a means of easing memories in individual purter, and stuff like that many of the websites are not compressed when they download.

My problem is I'm payin for up to 3mbps, and I'm only gettin half of that, so I think it is time to call my provider and give them heck.  ~xyz

very consistent 6mb down / 400 kb up.. and its still not fast enough!!   :)

yep you pay big $ for fast upload (because your considered a business).. A T1 or business class Synchronous DSL (SDSL) will set you back $500-$1500 a month depending on location, speed and options...

3961 down and 501 up. Running a cable modem.
Title: Re: Test your internet speed
Post by: gsoc on December 29, 2005, 11:54:39 PM
Those of you on modems can try this connection site instead http://www.bandwidthplace.com/speedtest/ (actually anyone can try it..) it only gives you the download speeds but seems to give a more accurate result for those on slower links (56k and below) .. Make sure you choose dialup as your connection type or the test will run a lot longer :)

You cannot get above 56k on an analog modem BUT you can have an apparent speed increase due to some of the compression algorithms and ip acceleration techniques that several of the bigger dialup ISP have implemented..  Not sure if they really work (they technically should) or a bunch of marketing hype..

FYI for those on 56k v.90 modems and not getting speeds in that range..
(Geekin out a little hang on...)  ;)
Getting a connection rate of 56k is dependant upon many things, but most importantly is line quality... A line with static, popping or humming will most definitely not get 56k and probably not even 33k.. Analog modems will auto negotiate their speed down to a level that yields the most reliable link (usually down to 28k but sometimes as low as 14k) and almost never renegotiate back up.. Of course you cant do anything about the Telco's end but you can make sure your premise wiring is not causing the problem..  Most houses have a phone "loop" wired throughout and over time rodents, corrosion, loose connections can affect the quality of the analog transmission. To fix this run a dedicated phone line from your telco box to your modem (LEGAL DISCLAIMER: Please seek help from a qualifed professional while doing any low voltage wiring modifications to your house)..  This will assure that you have a good connection to the telco line and eliminate the premise wiring as a possible problem..

Other things to check

Latest software drivers for the modem

An actual 56k modem (don't laugh I have sat for hours trying to up the speed on someone's modem only to crack the case and find out it wasn't a 56k modem  ;D )

A quality modem.. Yep most of the time you get what you pay for...

Your ISP could be your problem.. Testdrive another ISP to check

If you have tried all the above and still getting 28k, well unfortunately you are at the mercy of you Telco because there are several more dependencies that can break the 56k connection but the rest is on their end... You could call and complain but I guarantee your time would be better spent on the lake!!!

Gosc, when I was on dial up a long time ago, I got one of the first 56k hopped up modems with the software to make a blazer at the time.
I was livin in Chicago at the time and could't get it over 33k, after talkin to a tech there they said that most of their switches couldn't handle that kind of speed yet.
It ended up being almost 3 years before I was able to get to that 56k speed.

I bet there are still areas where this is the case, so dialup speeds can be effected by this.

Yes, for a cable modem 1.78MB/sec is slow.  You might want to find out why.  Try it during different times of the day. Cable modems are shared resources for a neighborhood.  If one of your neighbors goes crazy downloading movies, they could hog a lot of the bandwidth.

That is interesting

The 4MB download speed advertised on cable modems is for the pipe running through the neighborhood.  If you had only 2 users and both were trying to download movies, you'd each get 2MB each.  More people = less bandwidth.

As a practical matter everybody gets pretty close to the 4MB because there is so much dead time.  The time it takes you to type 2 keystrokes is about 100msec.  In 100msec every computer in the neighborhood has time to refresh a webpage.  So you do get a "virtual" 4MB.

Just check it at a couple of different times during the day to see if the rate changes.  If it doesn't, something is slow on your machine.
