Title: What rod for throwing blade baits like the silver buddy
Post by: bernerbass99 on January 13, 2018, 09:22:58 AM
Want to get a rod for throwing blade baits like the silver buddy. This will be a new technique for me the size baits I will be throwing are 1/4-3/4 . I was thinking Champion 704cb but not sure if the 3/4 size baits will be too much for the rod

That is a great rod. I have a Champion XP series 705C and love it.
You might also want to consider a 734C as well, that seems to be one of Gary's most versatile rods  in all his lineups.
i fish the Silver Buddies and several other baits like it and it really does not require a special setup.
If you are just starting to use these baits check out  http://www.cincyfisher.com/

This is a sponsor of my friend's website. Bryan, along with many of his members, uses these regularly. He highly recommends them, they work great and are a less expensive. In fact Cincy Fisher makes some great open hook jigs as well. Most importantly he uses good hooks.

Where are you located, just what state and what type of water do you fish most of the time.
If you spend some time looking back through some of the previous postings you will see just how versatile that rod is.
Also if you go to my friend Bryan's site baybass.com, you can read some of Potomac  River fishing reports where he discusses what he uses and how they work those baits to catch bass, stripers and big perch. He uses them a lot during early spring, fall and winter.

For what it's worth, I have a 705CB (Fury), same rod one power level up, and really like it, however 5/8 oz is as high I really feel comfortable making big casts with (maaaaaybe stretch to 3/4 oz if making shorter, controlled casts but haven't tried this yet) despite the 1/4 - 1 oz rating.  I think the Champions are generally a bit faster, so maybe they can handle slightly higher weights a bit better though?   I think the sweet spot on the 705CB fury is 3/8 to 1/2 for me.  It has a slower tip to cushion and keep those treble hook baits pinned so it does load up more quickly than a typical "Fast" rod as it's a Moderate Fast.   If I had to guess not having used the lower power version of this rod, I'd think the 704CB would be a too light to comfortably make long casts with a 3/4 oz lure, and would more excel best in the 1/4-3/8 with 1/2oz being ok, with the higher weights pushing it a bit, but still doable.  Others with the exact rod may say differently, and maybe Gary can give better advice or even suggest other rods.  Hope that helps.

Guys I have very little experience with Silver buddies. I just don't fish them. The feedback I get the most on is DX 742C and Champ 702C but I believe these guys are fishing 1/4 to 1/2 oz. I'd feel good jumping to a 3 power on 1/2 oz and above.

Sorry guys I just have no first hand knowledge here.
