It's gonna happen. If it happens to you a lot, you need to figure out your reels' brake settings, or work on your technique.
Here's a trick that may help you when you DO get a backlash-
I think most folks stop to early when they pick an over-run out. They assume that since they've got the snarls that they've completed the task. But I think if you'll take another 10, 15 or even twenty feet of line off the reel after you've finished with the snarls that you'll see a difference in recurring issues . By doing this you will tighten up the line UNDER where your backlash was.

had one so bad one time. newly spooled braid. second cast...worst EVER! tried to pick it out for an hour on the water and then just put it away. one of the last trips of the fall so ne3ver really had to use it.
I pulled that reel out 6 or 7 times during the winter and probably spent over 10 hours on it before I finally got it out.

I coulda used you this spring when I set the hook so hard on a jig bite but had the drag loosened the whole way for winter storage. :shocking: It would have made an eagle proud of that nest. lo

lo I think I would of cut it off and started over ;D
Just remember the more backlashes you pick out the better and quicker you get at picking them out. I'm starting to feel like an expert. I tell my fishing buddies if they get a backlash I will be glad to pick it out.

With the brake settings, I met Mr Dance (Bill) about 18yrs ago and he gave me some advice on that. He said "Take your lure, tie it on, hit the button and let the lure free fall to the floor. You want to play with the settings until no more than a foot of line keeps coming after the lure hits the floor."

That would be the spool tension not the brakes. The spool tension knob is for the beginning of the cast and the brakes are for the end of the cast.

That is correct. If you use a baitcaster for any real length of time you will be one of two things.
1. Damn good at getting backlashes out.
or
2. Damn good at using the equipment properly.
Most start out as #1 and evolve into #2.
I had been using braid for several years and decided I wanted to spool up some mono to fish a small jerkbait with. Anyway at this one pool you have these trees every so far apart around the bank. I had been doing pretty good and was really slinging my bait way across the pool. Then this one attempt I caught a piece of a tree and I believe it completely un-spooled the entire line from the actual spool. It was all really even and clean looking but one big puffed up spool. I thought oh I might be able to easily pull this out and be just fine. About 5 to 10 pulls and I was getting my knife and completely stripped it it was a huge mess. (https://i.imgur.com/jLYpckj.gif)

That happened to me the first cast of the season. Forgot I had the brakes completely off. Threw it out there pretty hard. Felt a Donk, looked down..took one look...NOPE wasnt gonna happen lol. All got cut off. Should have known I was doomed.

I seldom actually start picking at a backlash. I usually get them out by spooling under thumb pressure and then gently pulling at the line. The pressure thing usually does the trick. That being said, years ago I had my share of professional bird nests. A big problem is when people over-fill their spools. That will cause a constant problem. Most spools hold plenty of line where you don't need to fill it! :-*

You are gonna be sorry you said that Lip.
Even with all the years I have throwing baitcasters I still get one once in a while. Usually not mine that gets a massive birdsnest but I have picked out some doozies for other people. One thing I do is always, always check the spool tension to see how tight it is on every, every lure change. If unsure on the reel at the end of the cast I will run the magnetic brake up and then back it off til I am happy.
As I said, still have them but usually not too bad.

I had a real bad one a few weeks ago ~rant I played with it for 10minutes and said the heck with it :surrender: I got back home took the knife to it and a few minutes later I had an empty reel ~c~. I don't spend a lot of time messing with Over Runs ??? That's one reason why I carry so many rigs with me ~shade

That's a great tip. I'll definitely try. I always get backlash on my Quantum baitcaster. Not sure why on this reel and not on my AG's.

I do as Big G and Dale mention. Reeling in 1-3 turns depending on reel speed and how bad the backlash is can make it easier to pull it out. Sometimes just a turn or two of the handle straightens out the nest enough that you can slowly feed out the loose line with no picking at all.
Then I feed out more and more. Backlash usually comes with a bit of dig-in. I feed the line out until I get to it or close to it then reel it back in with tension on the line.
Sometimes I have to get it straightened out then just gently cast several times, each time drawing out some extra line before reeling in and casting a bit further with each subsequent cast until I get down far enough in the spool.
I have had backlashes so bad that after picking them out enough to draw off the line, I've tied off to a tree and taken a walk until my spool was empty. Then reel myself back to the tree.
Sometimes ya just gotta hit the "reset" button.

Not that I've had many backlashes, however carrying a small crochet hook to pick them out really makes the job easier
