Good afternoon to everyone,

Forecasted temps for across Central Texas today were 70-83dgrs with 71%humidity with a SE wind @ 10mphs.  It was another cloudy dreary day here.  There were some light showers early this morning.  It's since stopped but it still cloudy outside.  The forecast for the rest of the week is calling for partly sunny skies with the temps being in the high 70's.

Kinda busy running errands this morning.  Made a quick stop at the Post Office, bank and ATM machine.  The wife left me a small shopping list to deal with.  Dwayne is going to fire up the grill here later on fixing burgers and dogs  :food

I stopped in Walmart and picked up (2) Deep Cycle Marine Batteries for the G3.  Tomorrow if the weather nice I'm pulling the cover off the G3 and get those batteries installed.  After they get done charging there's some tinkering around I'm going to do.  :-*  My plan is to be on Nolan Lake by the end of the month ;)

Dwayne has gotten some good news from his doctors yesterday.  He's cleared to go back to work.  We spent the morning working on his resume getting it updated.  He submitted an application to work for the school district.  Hopefully he'll get accepted.

The rest of the day here will be spent relaxing and doing nothing  ~shade

Bud; I talked with Rodney I want to say last month.  He's had some medical issues he was dealing with.  He told me once he got to feeling better he'd stop in.  Yep he's choppin at the bit wanting to work on that boat he just bought.   The pollen is just now starting to show up here and like always it's having it effects.  I hate washing the inside of the vehicles windows.  Sometimes they look worst after than they did prior  >:(

To everyone hope your day has been a good one.  Y'all be safe in your travels and I hope your evening today is a relaxing and pleasant one.

was gonna chime in and add that never hurts to find a rod brand/type and stay with it ...

we do get caught up in 'how many rods'?  never can have too many rods...  mindsets.  but you ought to be able to do just about anything you WANT with the rods you have.

mono is a good/great line.  so too is flouro.  braid as well.  each just needs a different degree of care.

for instance:  check mono regularly for knicks/frays.  but even so, you can get in/out of some pretty gnarly cover ONCE with it.

braid is tough.  doesn't fray much or weaken too much.  but it also doesn't do well around rocks and shells.  I find flouro has better abrasian resistance in rocks/shellbeds...

play around.  have fun.  do stuff that 'everyone says you shouldn't'.  you might find out that it works great in spite of what I have to offer from the comfort of my keyboard.

Rods, Reels and Fishing Line / Re: I need help with rod/reel/...

Quote from: JasonK94Z on April 15, 2024, 11:35:11 AMI've read people doing this.  What size line do you use?  How is it if/when it gets a birdsnest?  Or is it less likely to do so?

Like I said, I don't want to push my preferences on anyone. What Lou posted above is excellent advice, it hurts your heart and mind a lot less to cut into a blown up spool of mono than one full of brand new braid.

Braid does not have the memory that the other two can get, so it doesn't try to loop or coil on you, which might make it easier in some respects. That was my experience, anyway. Maybe I just had garbage mono, I can't remember. Birdsnests suck regardless of line choice. To me braid is a little easier to pick out if it's a minor mess, because I don't have to worry about kinking the line like you do with mono or especially fluoro, but it's also easier to get a knot in your braid, and once it's there, if it doesn't pull out, it ain't coming out. There's pros and cons to everything.

Whichever line you choose, you need to make sure your reel is set up. The usual advice is to start with really conservative settings. Set the spool tension so that the bait drops from the rod tip fairly slowly, and set the brakes close to max. Once you get the hang of it, you can back off those settings incrementally.

Also, look at your spool occasionally when you're winding your line back on, make sure you don't have any loose loops or they'll cause you problems on the next cast.

As far as which weight, I usually throw PowerPro original in lb tests ranging from 15 lb for lighter baits up to 50 lb for frogging and heavy vegetation. 20 lb is a good "general-purpose" line.

Just keep practicing, it'll come. Even the pros get the occasional backlash.
