Okay, so the wife thinks she wants to try her hand at baitcasting. She's pretty good at a spinning reel setup so i am confident that she'll get the hang of it but until I see her real interest level i don't want to spend a lot on a rod /reel so I've got a 25% coupon for DSG and I'm looking at the Lew's Mach 1 Speed Spool and the One 3 Origin SE rod & reel combos...which of those do you think would be better and why? Any others around that price range that you'd add to the equation?

Both are gonna be about the same. If the Lews is the white/black/green reel, its got the dual brakes, which help to aid the curve. Plus, Lews customer service is top notch if there are any problems.
My wife says she is gonna leave me if I go fishing one more time........lord how I will miss that woman.

Bretts_daddy

Do Lew's rods or Origin rod's run close to spec as far as lure weight? Lighter? Stronger? Like I know Abu rods usually run heavier than list like a MH fishes more like a H and can handle lures above it's listed rating.

Not too familiar witb specs for the rods. Id imagine the MH F in either is gonna be just fine fir all around.

I vote for the Mach 1. I have a combo myself and it's easy to adjust.

So I found a good deal for her. I didn't end up going with a DSG combo for $100 - $120, instead i went with another online vendor out of Kentucky who has a promotion going on right now that if you buy an Abu Garcia Revo S, SX or STX reel you get a Veritas 3.0 rod of your choice for free. So I got her a 4th Gen Revo S (which is white which she likes) 7.3:1 LH reel and a 7'3" Heavy/Fast (lure weight: 3/8oz. to 1-1/2oz.) Veritas 3.0 rod for $129.99 (no tax and free shipping). I personally think this is a much better deal than any of the DSG combos for that price range and on the off chance she ends up hating baitcasting I won't shed a tear if i have to add that setup to my current lineup  ;D!

She wants to be able to throw the heavier baits over 1oz. (i.e.-Whopper Plopper 130) so she needed something with some backbone. Plus she'll be able to use this rod for spinnerbaits, jigs and frogs too.

I had a 7'3" H/F original Veritas. I gave that thing away to a friend because it was such a broomstick.  lo

If she wants to throw big baits...larger than 1oz. and frogs she's gonna' need a strong enough rod.

Honestly these guys are right. A Mh/f is a broomstick and the H/f is made of steel.
My MH/F is used for the thickest cover I can find.

Well, she'll just have to deal with it as the vendor most likely won't do a swap. This rod isn't going to be used for many types of fishing where rod sensitivity is essential...mostly heavier top water reaction baits, frogs and maybe some heavy jigs or spinner baits. Maybe the 3.0 is different then the 2.0 as well? If by chance the vendor is willing to swap what model would you get...7'3" MH/F or 7'6" MH/F? Like I said though...most likely she's stuck with this rod and will have to make the best of it.

The 7'3" would be best.
This. Otherwise, if they wont swap, you can always take it on vacation down here and catch bullsharks with it. Lol

Is it really that bad? I mean looking at it the rod looks like a normal Heavy rod would look. For finesse techniques she has he spinning rod setups so i don't think she'd be using this casting setup for much that would require the rod to be overly sensitive or is the sensitivity not what you're talking about and you just think it's too unforgiving for her to use period because of it's stoutness?

Just look at the lure rating on it. If it matches the lure weight she plans on throwing it should be fine.

I would not throw a spinnerbait on a heavy rod though. Personally I think you want something with a bit of give when it comes to spinnerbaits. If shes going to use braid, she's going to be destroying spinnerbaits left and right.
The rod you are talking about will work fine for Frogs. Lure rating will tell you about the whopper plopper.

That's just bit, the lure rating is 3/8oz. to 1-1/2oz. which would allow her to throw the 1.38oz. WP130 with ease and maybe even the 1.75oz. S-Waver 168. These guys are makin' me nervous though with their made of steel comments...just want to make sure she can throw the lures she wants so she has a fun time cuz the happier she is, the happier I will be  ~gf.

I threw the WP130 on the MH/F Villain and it has a tendency of tearing the baits out of their mouths.
I now use another rod for it.

Just because we call them broomsticks doesn't mean that they are not sensitive. My Villain can feel a grass blade come across the braid.
Just that they are built like a tank and will drag Godzilla out of the grass. And very little tip action.

A Dobyns Sierra 734 has a lot more tip than the Villain. A 736CB glass is probably a better choice.

Nothing but a Veritas is an option as that was part of the deal. I can return it but I have to pay shipping which I could go through my work and get a 60% discount. I did see a 7'1" MH/Moderate Fast rod with a lure rating of 1/4oz. to 1oz. would that be a better choice for the WP130 and other heavier top waters and glide baits?

Absolutely and would be better for spinnerbaits.
