Okay you therapy guys out there...

About a month ago my right knee started hurting on the left side (inside). It hurts most when driving or twisting, say foot on trolling motor and twisting slightly left or right.

The pain is always sharp and on the inside just below my knee cap.

I did nothing to injure it, no fall, no excessive twist, no excessive anything. I attribute it to one of the getting old and when I wake up in the morning something new hurts. Usually this new hurt goes away in a couple days. This one is not. I assume I need to do some strenthing...

What are some good home stretches / strengthening exercises.

Look up exercises for knee cap popping out.  Leg extensions and things like that to maybe tighten it up.  Just a guess

Pain on the side of knees, during flexion or twisting may sometimes be attributed to a  meniscus issue, arthritis, or a strain of some sort. Since you mentioned it's been a month already, it's becoming a chronic issue.

Does the knee feel like it's locking up after staying in one position for too long? Or feel like something is catching inside your knee when you move it slowly?

I have problems in my left knee, had to hide it when I joined the Corps. It's a hereditary defect in my family, the left knee is just twisted so that my left foot angles outward at approximately 75-80 degrees at rest.

I recommend a light duty brace, and quit twisting it. You would have to make a conscious effort and I know how hard that can be since I had to make the effort to keep mine straight through boot camp and infantry school.

I also have the same issue with my right ankle due to a prior injury. The pain is worse when I'm driving and I have to make the conscious effort to put my heel under my foot and not let it rest sideways against the accelerator.

So, force yourself to keep it straight, and light duty brace. You're not looking to let a brace give all the support, just a little help. You can even just cut the end off a sock and pull it up around your knee. And get off your feet as much as you can for a few days and let it rest, take some Motrin, drink water, and change your socks.

Strengthening exercises are good for stability, but if it's a cartilage issue, you'll likely need to do some injections.  Check out Durolane and ask your doc...

Talk to your orthopedic surgeon, he can give you possible solutions before it becomes a real problem, you don't want to tough it out to the point you need a replacement, they are no fun. Nip it in the bud Mike, Laurie has enough to do with taking care of 3 boys, have to nurse one of them is a bit much.

Thanks for the advice everyone.

No locking, popping, or catching. Very soar for a few steps after driving for 30 minutes or so. After an hour drive it takes 10 steps to loosen up and quit hurting.

Just very strange that it won't go away. As I said I'm no stranger to chit starting to hurt for no reason. But normally with some care it will go away.

Lou with your Physical Therapy experience any additional thoughts? I've had PT workouts save me from invasive procedures in the past...

I have some ideas that might help, but I will reach out via a PM. Without knowing more information suggestions will be tough.

As a disclaimer, I thought I should put this out there. I'm not a Physical Therapist, but my degrees are in Exercise Science and Wellness Education, with currently over 28 years of hands on field experience.

Didn't mean to put you on the spot  :surrender: But you could probably make a Fishermans Strengthening and Flexibility Video and charge for it. Anglers are learning that a general workout routine is necessary to stay on the water for hours at a time.

Mike I've got two things that really helped me. My knee was hurting so bad I was almost unable to walk. Went to see my ortho Dr. At some point I will need replacement. He started me on Diclofenac a anti-inflammatory and told me to order an Incrediwear knee brace. Took almost all my pain away. Some days I have a slight twinge but most days none at all

Appreciate the suggestion Mike. I thought about it for a spell, when the COVID shut downs nearly wiped out my client base due to my facility closing.
As an angler, would you see a benefit from watching strength and conditioning video's geared towards bass fisherman? Just a thought.

good luck mike.
but I do think you need to consider taking the rest of july, all of august and september off from IBASS.  reduce the stress.
of course you COULD always start fishing from the seated (Bill Dance) position...

From someone that's had multiple knee issues (ACL reconstruction including a torn medial meniscus & 4 rehabs), unless you've torn something it's probably "aggravated" meaning you've put your knee in a position it doesn't like so you're going to have to figure out how not to piss your knee off when you're operating your TM.

There was a time when I had A LOT of pain in my index finger joint on my right hand and had to get more than one cortisone shot in the joint (yes the shot hurt like hell) over a couple of years. Anyway I had to figure out how not to piss off that joint.......wanna know what I did? I put my wallet in the other back pocket of my pants so there was no more pressure on that joint. Sometimes it's that simple and the pain will go away pretty fast.

guess I've always seen the hamstrings as the key to the knee.  flexibility and strength.

I would definitely be interested in stretching and strengthening exercises that can be done at home to prevent should, back, knee, elbow pain :-* Getting old sucks but there has to be an easier way about getting to the end...
