I know with a casting reel you need to back with mono, but does the same apply to Spinning reels?

My wife says she is gonna leave me if I go fishing one more time........lord how I will miss that woman.

Personally, all of my reels are spooled 1/2 way with Stren 14 pound original clear blue mono. It cost less than 3 cents a yard ($8 is the price for a 330 yard spool).
It cuts cost to fill a reel, it gives me a high quality backing as a safety net if and when I catch a 20 pound blue cat or 30 inch striper while fishing for bass. I learned that from experience.  LOL
Stren also gives me a smooth surface for my braid to lay up on.

I like to use Berkley FireLine in 14 pound test ( 6 pound mono equivalent) on most of my spinning reels.
On Linda's frog rod and her mh jig rod we run 30 pound Power Pro Spectra.

Yeah I use backing too, but mostly just to save money on mainline. Never had braid slip on a spool yet.

Thanks guys. I kinda figured as much but wanted to check.

I like mono backing and a large diameter spool on the reel.

no fish is to small to catch

Some reels like the Penn Battle 2s come ready for braid. No need for mono backing.

I use a mono backing, about the same size as the braid. I'm slowly changing over to Power Pro from Fireline. I like Fireline, just like Power Pro better. lo

I fill the whole thing with braid, no backing.  Spinning or Baitcaster.

I always use a mono backing either on braid or flouro.,otherwise your just wasting more expensive line that you will never use .Also braid will sometimes spin on the spool without some type of backing .

Many spools are now made to accept braid, if you use braid it's not a waste to spool 100% braid, you can always swap it end for end and make the new backing out of the braid that later will become the primary line.

I agree and do this.

I just recently went back to braid on my lighter spinning rig. I don't use backing on any of my reels and feel very confident that I'm getting my money's worth out of every spool of braid. I do swap end for end across to other reels once I see significant signs of wear and fading.

The spinning setup I use most often is a medium action Shimano with a Revo Premier 20. My primary reasoning for not using backing on my lighter spinning setup is that I want to have plenty of line to wear out a true monster if I should ever need it.

You can still swap it end for end and get 2 reels out of one spool .

On my 3000FE, I went ahead and just wrapped some electrical tape around the spool and spooled it full of 30#.

On my 2500FE, I backed it with 12# mono as I am running 15# PP Slick 8 in yellow. I bought a 300# yard spool and would like to make it last for two spoolings. I feel pretty comfortable with 150 yards of braid should I ever have to fight a fish that would take it. Plus my connection knot is the same knot as I make my leader out of. The mono will break long before the knot will.

I don't think either of these FE spool's are braid ready. Both have almost slick surfaces?

Yep, it becomes a matter of what you want to do, no right or wrong.

theoretically.  that said, I have three spinning rods (don't tell anyone  ~shhh) that I have spooled iwth 20# braid (suffix) and started directly on the spool with braid.  Never an issue.
