Rowdy,

A friend recommended I ask your opinion on this matter.  I am looking at purchasing an '04 Triton21X and it has a Yamaha 250 HPDI.

My question is, how would you rank the 250 HPDI on reliability vs Merc or Bombardier?  I haven't heard much about them and didn't know if they have had any problems?

Thanks,
Richard

The 250 HPDI has had some P/H failures, more than just a few. I have even set a couple new P/H's on these motors myself. One of the ones I did was from the dealer who set this motor up didn't set the oil linkage rod up right. Since then it and the other I did have many hours of use and no problems.

I truly believe that it gets back to the rod for the oil set up right and the type of oil used. The new DI motors all have a problem with the sooting in the motor and oil is the biggest factor in this. The Bombardier oil is the best choice JIMO. The XD50 they have out is a good choice for all carbed engines and DI motors. They also have the XD100 oil which is IMO the best on the market. This would only be cost affective in the Etec motors though as its quite expensive.

I do think the Yamaha product is good product as a rule, they don't have the HP that the others offer, even when Yamaha has the 300 HP engine. I also perfer the Bombardier motors over the others. I should say though in being far here it should depend on you and what dealer you like to use and feel that he can take care of you with whatever you get.

Rowdy,

Thanks for your response.  I have just one more quick question.

The motor has been used by a pro for 9 months. He said that at every tournament he has had the Yamaha service team check everything out at every tournament.  In your opinion, would you consider the motor well cared for and properly setup?

Thanks,
Richard

Rowdy

You are really putting me on the spot here dude LOL...Let me say this about those setups. While I use to work for OMC and more importantly I worked more than a fewq of the FLW and everstart tourneys to name a few of the bigger ones, I have begged the pro's like Denny Baur and others to come to the trailer when they saw me setup to let me change the lu oil and check things over for them. Begged

They did only when things was convienent for them. They get so busy and wrapped up in fishing and finding fish the maintance and up keep of there rig was second place at best. Then you add things like how busy the trailer is when everyone is hit things in the lake or fubarded something while out fishing and then you have someone come in that just needs a check up, well all I am saying this don't mean much if you ask me dude. I have seen a lot go on on the tourneys and they are treated as the equipment they are to those guys.

I have seen them jump dirt dikes 6-8 foot tall with them and everything in between too. So I would make sure its a really good price before I jumped on what looks like new and is real shiney...I could hide just about anything I needed to on a rig with the experience I have and those guys are no different...

All I am saying here is make sure of things and have someone check this over for you like another dealer you know. I charge one hour shop time to look over a used boat and trailer with engine for someone how is looking at buying it. Money well spent too, if this is at a dealer already ask if you can take it somewhere else for a look see to keep everyone honest. I was not raised the way I see so much of this type of stuff they cover up instead of fix it to begin with and do this the honest way... I hope this will help you.

Rowdy,

Thanks for the input.  It does help! I should really check the rig out close.  I will take it to an unbiased dealer before forking over a load of money!

Well guys, I just hope I didn't ruin anything for anyone. I would not want to do that at all. Its just that money comes around my house pretty hard to get and hate to see anyone get snow balled here on something not knowing...

I was always told if you didn't have something good to say about anyone or something, not to say anything. Well I felt that keeping quite in this case was not the right way either. I do hope I didn't affend anyone with this as it was not intended...

Mike Cork

No dude you didn't offend anyone and you only put out information that is true but didn't point any fingers at anyone nor did you say all pros are included, just that a person should be careful. Great Post Rowdy ~c~

Dude, so far I'm with you. Everything you have posted is right on the money and I take your posts as gospel. I have found that its hard to find a person who will shoot it to ya straight in the outboard market. They are trying to either sell you something or well,,, sell you something.. Like you, money is hard to come by at our house also, so it is good to hear the truth and be cautioned by someone in the know........Thank you Brother......Dave

Rowdy, quick question for you since.  I have an 04 225 VMAX HPDI.  i have been having problems getting it to turn more than low 5000 RPMs no matter what prop I run.  I think I may be over oiling and fouling plugs.  How do i know the oil linkage is at the right length.  I am pretty mechanically inclined and have checked all the other thinks i can think of that might be off TPS, Throttle plates are synchronized, throttle linkage is opening throttle all the way, etc...Only thing I cannot seem to know if it is right is the oil settings.  Any help you can give me is appreciated even if it is for other things that i might be missing.

VAFishing, unfortunately Rowdy dosen't visit the site anymore. I am sure that someone will be around to help out before long though ;) Awesome Bullet is pretty well versed in Yamaha's  ;)

Thanks Mike, I know AB is pretty sharp on these things.  Hopefully he or someone else can help me out here.  I just want my motor to do what I think it should do.  Just has not run right in awhile now.

AB

Does it run any better with a fresh set of plugs?  Have you had the ecm reprogramed, if so did the issue start right after that?  If it is something that just started occuring in the last few months, I'd be looking elsewhere like the high pressure filter or the filter in the bottom of the vapor seperator.  I believe that the setup is at WOT it should touch the WOT stopper, at idle it should be just a hair off of the idle stopper....

vafishing

Hey AB how you doing.  I have just done all the filters so they are good.  Motor has had this problem since before then.  The ECM in the motor was actually replaced back when it was new due to a TSB for over oiling.  Plugs in there are only about a month and a half old but if i do have an over oil condition they could be fouled.  Will pull them tomorrow night to check.
