I have a 2005 Ranger Z21 with a 250 Verado that i just got and i took the boat out to run it today and it is extremely slow. I upgraded from a 520 VX with a 225 Opti and it was faster than this rig. I at least expected 68-70 mph (taking into consideration the extra weight of the Verado). Anyone know any suggestions? Also the boat only has a 4 inch manual jackplate and a 26 pitch prop..what is the right pitch and setback i need to make this rig run like it should?
Thanks!

Need some specifics before we can comment; what speed are you getting a wide open throttle? What rpms are you turning at that speed? What prop are you running (Tempest, Trophy, etc)? And what is your prop to pad distance?

Wide open it only turns 5100 rpm and tops out at 56 mph and I have a 4 blade 26 pitch bravo 1 prop and as far as the. Prop to pad.  Distance I hae no clue

Ok how high are you on the jack plate? Have you tried to top it out on the plate? You should be turning more the 5100 RPMs. Now I'm no expert on 4 strokes but 5100 seems very low. Is your hole shot any good? You should be hitting the upper 60s lows 70s easy with that rig.

Well its a manual jackplate and i havent tried to adjust it yet...and also it takes the boat FOREVER to plane off...my local dealer said that it should be gettin about 6100 rpms roughly which is nowhere close to wut i am getting. Im gonna try a smaller prop and a bigger jackplate because people are telling me you need a 10 inch setback on the z series rigs. Do they make a 10 inch that will hold the big 4 strokes?

I have a 2008 Z-21 with a Yamaha 250 2 stroke mounted on a 10" Bob's Machine Shop hyd jack plate. It works great.

Im thinkin about the th marine atlas jackplate because i had a 6 inch bobs machine on my old boat and it got grease everywhere on the transom. The atlas doesnt take any grease so it will be cleaner i hope.
Thanks, Tclouse

Try maxing out on your jack plate first. Go as a high as you can. If its sitting on the bottom of the jack then that will be some of your problem at least on the RPM side. You will be amaze at how much an inch or two high on the jack plate will make in the performance of your boat.
