**Disclaimer I do use quick change clips and change lures all the time so maybe tying directly to the tie wouldn't matter**

So I was wondering "why" they put the line tie "how" they do on cranks/jerkbaits/topwaters/etc-- Vertically instead of Horizontally? While using a clip it has a "bend/curve" to it allowing the bait to freely swing BUT if the line tie was positioned horizontally the action should/would be increased quite substantially, right?? I attached a crude pic showing what I mean. Thanks for any comments!

Well, you basically have two halves to any plastic bait. These are glued together. Being halves, that makes for only one easy to do direction when it comes to how the wire is laid in the bait for the line tie and hook hangers, if that makes any sense.

Without being disparaging- quit the clips and learn to tie a Palomar knot. I promise you that it will save you a heartache someday. You can tie and re-tie very quickly with practice. It'll save you a heartache someday. oops. I said that already.

But it will.

The "WHY" is a physics question.  It has to do with the angle between the line and intended direction of travel.  That angle increases as the bait gets closer to the boat and having a vertical line tie allow the bait to swim horizontally until the baits gets almost under the rod tip.

I also use Mann Speed Clips on most of my hard baits.  Not because I'm lazy or don't know how to tie all the necessary knots, most days my hands refuse to do what I ask them to do and it might take me 5 min to tie a simple Palomar knot.  Lou can attest to how frustrated I get sometimes when they aren't working properly.

And I think that was an outstanding drawing.  It looks just like mine...

+1 for FD's response. Like many older anglers I have nerve issues in my hands, Previous to the damage, I always tied directly to the lure. You lose "feel" with the speed clips and other devices.  JMO

Lee, tks for the explanation on why.

I used Speed Clips for (1) season and had multiple issues using them. (1).  I have FAT fingers and trying to get that clip open / close was a PITA for me even using needle nose pliers.  (2).  Like some of yawl mentioned when the hands and fingers don't work right> I have that issue on some days also < I couldn't get the clip open or closed.  (3).  I lost a few crankbaits because the clip gave a way.

After the year was up I resorted back to just tying a Palomar Knot.

I go back and forth between the clips and a Palomar.

I have a genetically inherited condition that at best I have moderate tremors to at worse my hands and sometimes arms just do whatever they want. My brother has suffered with it from his teens but I was lucky enough that it didn't get bad for me until my early 50's.

Lee, I'd take 5 minutes to tie a palomar knot. It can take me twice as long or more sometimes.

Between that and the arthritis it just makes it a whole lot easier on me to use the clips and only have to retie that knot a few times in a day.

Two split rings will help if you want the action to "increase substantially". Ummm.

Well, it'll HELP but you're kind of asking for a physical impossibility. The baits' "action" is mostly determined, and limited to (kind of) the bill and baits' design/width etc. A lure is only going to do so much. "Freeing" it up at the line tie may help some lures, but generally you got what you got. Get it?

I sure appreciate all the replies! Does make sense that with 2 pieces put together the line tie just goes vertically. Maybe that's also why the bait can be "tuned" left/right.

I use these type clips(but bass pro version- come in size 1(20lb) 2(30lb) and 3(40lb).

I agree with Dale, the palomar would be the best way to go, but sometimes my hands shake bad enough to make it almost impossible to tie while I can generally hold a clip well enough to tie a knot. Notice how some baits come with a split ring, that might give you the best of both worlds, try putting split rings on several cranks before you hit the water and see how that works out for you.
