I need to remove my Tilt and Trim unit on my 2000 225 Evinrude and was wondering If anyone would let me know the easiest and safe way to remove the unit. I check the service manual but, it said to see the accesory manual which I don't have. I am going to have to find a leak that is on the Transom side of the unit and can not get to it mounted to the boat. Any help is appreciated! Lynn

Make sure that you have enough room in or around the splashwell to trim up. Getting all cables and hoses and such ready. Then trim up all the way, then on the starboard side of the motor you will see a funny looking lug up on the top side of the transom bracket. Roll it into the down position to hold the motor up. Trim the motor down till this lug has a little weight on her.

Then all you need to do is remove the snap ring in the tilt ram pin in the swivel bracket of the motor and the snap ring on the pin that goes through the transome brackets holding the trim unit in place. Then push the pins out as they will drift right through by simply pushing them if you play with the weight of the motor and how it sits on the pins. You should not have much trouble getting them out.

There are plastic bushing in each side of each pin so make sure to keep those in place or get them as you come apart so as to put them back in. Then if you need to get this to where you have it on a bench you will need to remove the pans on the motor, which if you plan on this; do the pan removal first thing.

If your going to R&R the motor assembly you don't have to do this, all you really need for that is to pull the tilt ram pin and lay the unit back as far as it will, then take a swivel 1/4" drive 3/8" socket to the four bolts on the motor to remove that. Then address the wiring.

Thanks Rowdy, I thought that was what I needed to do. Only, I didn't want a mashed finger or hand. So I figured I would ask.

I removed the tilt and trim unit last evening and found that 1 of the socket head cap screws had vibrated out and another one had loosened up some. I replaced the one that was gone and tighened up the one that had loosened up. Also, put a dab of loctight on those two screws. everything else seemed to be tight. re-installed everything. She is working fine now. I will say the wiring issue is a pain to deal with though. Thanks for the help! Lynn

Dude you just got to hold your mouth just right LOL...Now did you get the ground strap under one of the four bolts that hold the motor in place??? Real important to put that under a bolt head...
