I purcahsed 2 sets of Kalin swim bait jigheads for some GY swimbaits I plan on throwing this year.  3/8 ounce lead.

reel-nut was nice enough to give me a bottle of Powder Paint (black) to try my hand at painting my own jigheads.  Well, I had mixed results.  Iheated the jigheads up at 275 in the oven, on a cookie sheet and some parchment paper.  I dipped them in the powder, and placed them back in the oven to cure at 350.  They tunred out alright, but almost all of them ended up with some spots where the paint stuck to the parchment paper.  It's not as glossy a finish.

1.  What can I do differently to cure this problem?

2.  Can I reheat these jigheads, and re dip them to fix the areas that didn't take as well?

Thanks!

The problem was that you placed them on the paper. I hang all of mine from the rack itself. You also went at too high of a temperature for the cure. Try doing the cure at 275 for a longer period. You will be surprised at the difference.

Ditto

Also, for small runs try using a propane torch to heat your heads 1 at a time for a few seconds.

Thanks a lot Miles and Karl.  I'll give that a try the next time around.

If the head starts getting real shiny, its preparing to liquidate  :roll2: Just about 3-4 seconds per side in the light blue part of the flame. After just a couple you'll get the hang of it. Also be sure and bust the paint out of the eyes before you cure them in the oven or you'll need a jack hammer  lo ;)

Okay, so the ones that aren't perfect, can I re-do those?

I doubt it, the paint will scortch or bubble. You'll have to heat those in an oven because the torch will burn them plus the paint will be thick. Try it  :-\  lo

Yeah, they're not so screwed up that I think I have to worry about it.  I doubt a fish is going to think to itself, gee look at that terrible powder paint job on that jighead.  I don't think I'll eat that swimbait.

Eric,
Just get you some allthread from the hardware store and cut it to length of the oven your using(not for cooking) The allthread will also keep them from sliding

I just use a cigarett lighter and dip the jig head and then tap the excess powder off and then just touch it up with the lighter again to seal it and hang it up i have one of those hangers they used to use in the post office for the stamps that i hang my jig heads from to cure them works great

I use a small alcohol burner to pre heat the jigs, them dip in powder paint. I saw one for sale at a home depot type store for a few $$. I use a bake pan in the oven. I extended the sides of the pan up using cheep tin attached with sheet metal screws and then strung copper wire across the higher edges of the extension. Just hang the jigs on the wire to bake.
